I think it’s normally 1-4 playing for the Cup, 5-8 for the Plate, 9-12 for the Bowl, 13-16 for the Shield.Thinking about it, there's also "Shield" which has to fit in somewhere...
Then in overall competition it’s often the top tier is the Championship and the second tier is the Trophy.

I should hope the so-called fan was also ejected from the ground, if what was stated was true and I am now wondering if the so-called fan had committed an offence in law for the said action.

Quite. Far from being shown a red card, the 'keeper should be awarded the Man of the Match bubbly!
At least that would be sealed with a cork and uninterfered with!

I've always thought that the Nations League has actually got it right in terms of providing competitive football for the smaller teams.
Right now, it wouldn't hurt to organise a tournament for the teams that didn't qualify on a confederal basis. Give a place in the next World Cup to each team that wins in their confederation, and you've suddenly got a good system for non-World Cup football.
Anyway, I'm sure I'm not alone in being completely disinterested in this World Cup.

World Cup underway and from what I've heard Ecuador had a goal ruled offside by VAR that clearly wasn't, leading to jokes that referee officials have been bribed too.

Though CONIFA is specifically teams which aren't affiliated with FIFA, often breakaway states and separatist groups.
The suggestion upthread of each confederation having a "minor nations" competition with the winners getting a World Cup place isn't a terrible idea- particularly if Infantino goes ahead with his idea to expand the World Cup to 48 teams...

Expected result really, Ecuador are a decent tough South American team.
I’m really struggling to find any kind of enthusiasm for this at the moment. I don’t know if tomorrow’s game might light some kind of faint spark in me but at the moment it’s leaving me completely cold.
I’m not going to watch any of the tournament partly out of protest but also because I can’t be bothered. I’ve no enthusiasm for it and it’s about time FIFA’s corruption was not rewarded. I hope the whole tournament is a disaster.
The side of me that’s ethical feels the same. The side of me that’s a glory hunter keeps thinking “Yeah but what if we start doing well?”
God I hate myself sometimes…

The only 'positive' you could argue is that the tournament is being played in mid-season, meaning players aren't as fatigued after playing 38 games plus whatever cup runs they've had on top. Of course the extreme heat may negate this.

Yet another reason why the World Cup should not have been awarded to Qatar in the first place. Crowd numbers at games not involving Qatar will be interesting.......

I will watch the world cup or at least some of it but I have neve been less interested in the tournament than the one on offer at present. There is no way it should be in Qatar. It is not a suitable country, even before we consider the backward approach to human rights displayed by the leadership of that country.

I didn't think Qatar were a BAD side they just weren't at the required level.
There has been a lot of talk about how popular football in Qatar is (and I am sure it is) but I think that means supporting big European teams, enjoying winning and expecting football always to be like that. It simply isn't like that and the result yesterday and response to that result was a stark reminder of that

Looking back at the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids, which I closely followed, the disappointment almost overwhelms me again.
I haven't watched the World Cup since.

Sadly and predictably political and identity matters have dominated this tournament. Where I'm utterly confused though is that for the last decade or so the line from the vocal political class has been that we aren't tolerant enough towards certain cultures and beliefs. In fact, if you did not adhere to their doctrine then you were a ...........(fill in as appropriate!). Yet all of a sudden the tables have turned and those same individuals who were banging the drum are now suggesting that we go back on their 'orders'. Eventually this was going to happen though. Sooner or later, some of these causes were going to collide. As someone who is apparently privileged, too apathetic about certain issues and is part of the problem, where on Earth do I stand regarding the 'onelove' armbands etc?

Clearly, it goes without saying that the WC should not be in Qatar.
But I'm getting fed up with some of the media hysteria. I simply don't believe that THOUSAND of people died building stadiums. That implies death rate was worse than Victorian tunnelling (railway link). Actual facts are thin on the ground but the 15,000 figure seems to be TOTAL migrant deaths over a 10 year period...
If we think safety standards in Qatar matter (and I would argue we should) then we should aim to get our facts straight. There must be Western engineers involved who could give an off-the-record briefing.
That said, we had 18 months of the media not being able to report death stats properly in 2020-21 so it's not a complete surprise

*Admits* Looking forward to Senegal v Netherlands, tough one to call even though the odds heavily favour NL; having watched them for donkey's years this certainy isn't the team of under-achieving all-stars Oranje normally put out, so it's intriguing if the sum of the parts can be greater than the whole this time round!
