So let me understand what I think you say. It is a players right to stand two yards offside when the referee has lined up the players ready for a free kick to be taken and it is wrong for a referee to demand that players move into an onside position instead.

Can anyone cite what the Laws of the Game say about such a situation.

Before the free kick is taken, a player standing offside is committing no offence.

A player is not offside simply by being in an offside position. Therefore, an offence is not committed and the referee cannot take any action.
Law 11:

Offside position
It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position.
A player is in an offside position if:
• he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent

A player is not in an offside position if:
• he is in his own half of the field of play or
• he is level with the second-last opponent or
• he is level with the last two opponents

Offence
A player in an offside position is only penalised if, at the moment the ball touches or is played by one of his team, he is, in the opinion of the referee, involved in active play by:
• interfering with play or
• interfering with an opponent or
• gaining an advantage by being in that position

Many thanks for your full information. I just wondered why a player would decide not just to line up in line with all the other players when a free kick was awarded but to take the unusual position that the earlier posting said that Dele Alli took.

You'll see it in every game from dead ball situations, often as a distraction for opposition defenders.

Congratulations to The Republic of France on their achievement defeating Croatia 4-2 in a thrilling Final.

Loved the presentation as the heavens opened but it didn't dampen the spirits of the French President Macron and he along with the other dignitaries was absolutely soaked. Putin got an umbrella long before anyone else but even he was dripping.

At least the rain waited for the end of the match !!!

Back from a fantastic visit to Eindhoven to see Jong PSV beat Darlo 3 -1. Darlo gave a good account of themselves against a full time Dutch 1st division professional side. The game was played at the fantastic De Herdgang ( which is the PSV training base) and was watched by over 300 Darlo fans in superb sunshine.

It was a fantastic weekend that we turned into a cultural tour of the low countries via the medium of beer! ( we visited Brussels, Antwerp, Eindhoven and Amsterdam and did it all by train)

I'm sure you know, but it's the progressively thicker black stripes at the bottom of the shirt that 'fade' the red into black that is the reference.

Not entirely. Eric popularised the joke scoreline as a tongue-twister for his friend James Alexander Gordon, the voice of the football results for many a year.

The Two Ronnies later did their own version of the joke which was less funny, as they added a "so far" into it which made it more of a mouthful and no longer sounded like a genuine football score.

What the referee is doing is advising players standing in an offside position that if they remain there, in the goalkeeper’s line of sight, they’ll be considered to be gaining and advantage and will be given offside. Player then moves.

The referee is meant to be the referee, not the coach (cf the words of a French ref at a recent England v Italy rugby union international)

I think there's a strange trivia question looming for Man City. For all our emphasis on all out attack often meaning piling up the goals before 70 minutes, we've had a poor record over the years for coming from behind to win. So if someone was asked who the opponents were the last two times we recovered to win from two nil down, would they know the answer was Bayern Munich and er....Bayern Munich? And this was Ribery, Robben etc against City kids!
