See. This is the attitude I just don't get. How can winning a couple of games of football be classed as a distraction. Virtually everyone in football says winning breeds confidence and boosts a team. I just don't get the "it's not worth it" brigade at all. It doesn't seem to be holding Wigan back any.
If no one entered anything they didn't have a chance of winning then there would hardly be any teams in anything.

What do you sing when playing Nottingham Forest ?
As they can top your single European Cup do you have to refer to the number of FA Cups you have won
To be fair you can top them on League Titles as well.

As a supporter of a club currently in the Championship play off places it someone offered me winning the FA Cup or staying in the play off places I would choose the FA Cup all day long.
In 48 years watching my team it's pretty much the only thing I have never seen us win live. It's the one thing I want above all else
I should know this, but as you clearly support Aston Villa not the Rags (that nickname dates back to 1892, btw) where does this "Citeh" epithet come from? I thought it originated with United fans who didn't come from Manchester (ie. the majority) having a double dig at both the Mancunian accent and the club that most Mancunians supported.

Regarding my team Aston Villa (and Nottingham Forest) winning the European Cup, both teams did it the proper way i.e. the prerequisite was that to participate in the tournament, the team had to win the top flight division. There was none of this nonsense of being able to theoretically win it if finishing second, third, or fourth in the division.
I remember that the winners of the FA Cup were also allowed to participate in the UEFA Cup and/or Cup Winners Cup if they were also not the top flight division winners. In my view, the Cup Winners Cup tournament should be brought back, with the present day Europa tournament scrapped.

Wigan lost the two games prior to their game against Man City last month, and given they've only lost 5 all season I suspect that that game may have had an impact. Obviously when we beat Barnet and Crewe I didn't think "oh I wish we lost that", but it can be a bit of an unwelcome distraction. The fact that attendances are well down in the cup games show that no one really cares about it, even at the dirt cheap prices we have for those games.

This was something of a difficult fixture for Hyde, away to one of the better mid-table sides and it was a relief to see Hyde take a 12th minute lead in a match between two good defences and this was a well-earned three points to keep Hyde still top of the division.

It's highly unlikely that a Championship side would win the FA Cup so the play offs are the priority.

A hat-trick from Gareth Bale in this match. Noting what you say about players not "giving their all" above, just think what the final score in this cup match might have been if they had really "gave their all" for their new manager.....
Shame it was merely a friendly rather than a meaningful game, but then again Wales did fail to qualify for the World Cup this year, couldn't even make the play offs, so it might gives Wales something to say "look at us, we won the highly prestigiousness China Cup", a bit like some of those pre-season friendly tournaments, it be a trophy but isn't really anything to shout about.

That was not the point of my posting, which was a reflection of how the Welsh team players would actually respond to Ryan Giggs as their national team manager, as some website members seemed to worry about this particular matter when he was first appointed as the team manager.
I don’t think a game against China is any sort of test to measure how Giggs is as a manager. China are crap.

Again, I must reiterate that the ONLY reason why I made this posting was this was the first match as the Welsh team manager for Ryan Giggs and that posting was made in response to worries made in postings on this thread when he was appointed as the Welsh team manager that Welsh team players may not "give their all" if he was appointed as the Welsh team manager.
It was nothing whatsoever to do with the China Cup as a competition nor was it anything to do with the ability of Ryan Giggs as the Welsh team manager.
I hope this posting clarifies the solitary point that I attempted to convey in my posting.

Fair enough, I suppose. One of those "digs" that can be tolerated from fans born and brought up way beyond the M60 and supporting their local(ish) team, but not from United fans. The biggest one for me though, is the United fans that call the Etihad, the "Council House". That *proves* they don't live or work within the boundary of the City of Manchester. For those that don't know, every seat filled over 34,000 attendance means a dividend to M'cr City Council, and the figure is tied to the fortunes (on and off the pitch) of the club. Thus City are contributing millions to the Council which goes to reducing Council Tax bills. Shame the Stadium isn't a mile further East!
On a similar vein, a mate of mine is a Bromley fan and whilst he's delighted that they've reached the FA Trophy final it's tinged with sadness that their cup run has probably cost them a play off place. A place in the football league would be a much bigger prize.

It's just how things are, play offs are a potentially much bigger prize.

I will hold my hands up and admit I may have been wrong!
I was very impressed with the performance. I know it is only China, so we can't take a huge amount from it, but still a very professional performance. Even losing 1-0 today against Uruguay I am not disappointed with. Although of course, the real test will be when the Euro 2020 qualifiers start next year!
What I meant was that if they were given the choice of an unlikely FA Cup win or the the play offs, they would choose the play offs. The same as Premier league clubs regarding Champions League qualification and the FA Cup.
Because United fans keep complaining that City fans come from Stockport - completely forgetting (except they probably don't know) that thousands of Mancunians were kicked out to Overspill estates in the 1960s, and that these estates often have SK postcodes
I wouldn't say it's Complaining.

Especially when most of their players couldn't give a toss. I am embarrassed the Chinese national team still exist even.
Strange choice of friendly, or not. I guess the prize money comes handy.
