Basically, they should drop Rooney. For the exact same problem that richw beat me in posting. Plus, he's no longer a goalscoring threat. This would be my best starting XI (in diamond formation):

Hart; Clyne, Smalling, Cahill, Rose; Dier; Henderson, Sterling; Alli; Kane, Vardy

It's ridiculous that our defence options are so weak that we have to play Henderson instead of someone more attacking, like Lallana, however.

I think that the England time is more of a threat without Rooney. He simply isn't the best option any more, and he doesn't fit into the style of football that I'd like to see England playing.

I watched the England game for a while, but to be honest I was pleased when Mrs Greenback wanted to turn it over to Peaky Blinders...

Even Clive Tyldesley seemed bored, and desperate to try and convince everyone that it was an interesting match. Did he see sense and give up later in the game?

I dont know but on radio 5 they were honest about how poor England were and how boring the game was. Danny Mills was very critical.

Definitely the latter. We seem to have a lot of good players who don't fit together or play out of position trying to ensure teachers favourite gets in.
Rooney was supposed to be the tip of the diamond, but kept pushing far forward forcing Kane and vardy wide which wipes out our biggest goal scoring threats.

To be fair on reflection we did have a fair few good attacks, but the final ball came short due to not being on the same wavelength or out of position players,

Maybe the tactic is to bore the opposition to sleep, and then sneak goals whilst they're snoozing.
If England win the tournament playing boring football nobody will mind, and let's be fair we keep winning games now, but the collapse is due,

I would play one up front ( Kane) Two wide men ( Rashford & Stirling) Rooney and Alli in midfield, Dier in front of a back four of whoever ( none are really good enough) with attacking full backs and Hart in goal.

We are going to get beaten so lets have a go and get beaten playing attacking football!

Or we can do what I think Woy will do and play a midfield chugtastic threesome of Milner, Henderson and Dier

yes, I would be happy with us winning the championships like that if i felt we actually COULD do that! We aren't good enough so may as well loose attractively! The defence is far too porous and underskilled to try and grind out 1-0's.

The players simply aren't good enough, disciplined enough or tactically astute enough to cope. They should be encouraged to play their natural game and go for it. An international manager cant work with the teams for long periods of time to improve their overall game like a club manager can so we should use the players as they feel comfortable and get on with it.

We will go out in the group stage anyway.

Vardy, however, is 29 years old, at a crucial juncture in his career and his profile has never been higher. He only broke into the professional game in 2012, after nine years in non-league football, and could find it hard to turn down the chance to join Arsenal, even if they finished runners up to Leicester last season.

There are two interesting documentaries on I player about England and the European Championships of 1996. One is hosted by Alan Shearer and the other on Radio 5 by Mike Ingham ( using some of the same materiel) but both are worth watching if only to reminisce how good England were that summer.

Of the three good England team i can remember ( 86/90 and 96) I am not sure which was the best but I do know Paul Gascoigne is the best England player I have ever seen. That goal in 96 against Scotland was superb.

ah the jealous sweaty sock. They changed the rules to make it easier for teams to qualify for the tournament. England, Wales and Northern Ireland all made it. Scotland still failed.

I do like the qualifying for the second round of an international football tournament gallery they have at the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden. It is an empty room....................
