Last night saw both Manchester City and Real Madrid progress to the semi-final stage of the Champions League.

And tonight saw Atletico Madrid put out Barcelona!

Slightly more predictably Bayern Munich overcame Benfica in the other semi final.

I suggest you go on any of the Villa message boards and read peoples opinions of the O'Neill era and the aftermath.

Bolton Wanderers are a recent example of how a once Premiership side will face life in the 2016/7 season later this year in League 1.

Stockport County are a prime example of how the fortunes of a once-Championship side faded so badly that even League 1, League 2 and Conference Premier was not the end of the downward slide to their current status as a Conference North side. (Apologies for using the old Conference terminology).

Brilliant games, I remember them both well now you mention them and thanks for the clips. I did enjoy our game tonight though. Proper snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against a very good team tonight.

Yes.

I've been a Leicester supporter for over 40 years and I'm struggling to take in what's happening this season, things like this aren't supposed to happen.

I go to games when I can, mainly those in the north. I was at the Sunderland game last week.

It's difficult to get to many home games these days as I live in Carlisle and the last train North of Lancaster on the WCML is ridiculously early.

It's impossible to get home by train from an evening game anywhere in the country without an overnight stay.

Can't even get home from a 3PM game on a Saturday without leaving before the end.

It didn't used to be that bad. Then Virgin 'improved' the service.

Watford are now officially safe. Dagenham & Redbridge have been relegated, with York City *sigh* likely next through the trapdoor. Northampton are League 2 champions, Wigan lose to Doncaster 3-1 - relegation-threatened Doncaster have their first win in 17, Wigan have their first loss in 21. Cheltenham become National League Premier champions and become the first team in the modern era to bounce back into the Football League at the first opportunity.

I probably say not bad results for both of these teams and with Blackpool lost 3-0 to Rochdale it mean Oldham are three points clear from drop zone and have one game in hand over Blackpool.

In all seriousness, you probably will bounce back soon - Man City, West Brom and West Ham were all promoted again after a season in the Championship.

West Ham are probably the best example. They were relegated in 2011, but promoted in 2012 through the play-offs. They have stayed up ever since, and could end up with a Champions League place.

Winchester City still need a point from their last two games to be sure of a play off spot. Despite starting brightly, they went behind midway through the first half after a defensive error, although Larkhall's scorer shouldn't have been on the field. In the second half Winchester levelled through a penalty (which saw Larkhall's number 3 dismissed for a second yellow) and laid siege to the Larkhall goal but couldn't get the second. To add insult to injury, North Leigh hit the post at the death against Evesham; had they scored, it would have ended Evesham's hopes of a top five finish.

Was that not Lincoln City back in 1987 who were the first team to come straight back up after bowing out of the basement division? Also I believe the original Darlington FC did so in 1990, and more recently, Bristol Rovers came straight back up last year?

I was expecting the not so mighty nowadays Villa to have bowed out of the top flight at some point, with the way the club is being (mis)managed in recent seasons.

You can only ride luck for a certain amount of time before it runs out, with this season being when the luck finally ran out for the Villa.

A positive I can see is that it gives the chance for a fresh start. On a final point, Villa won the European Cup in 1982 by doing it the proper way i.e. to enter the tournament, you had to actually win the top flight championship. None of this present day nonsense of runners up, third and fourth placed teams sneaking in. As it is not my intention to upset Man Utd, Liverpool, or Chelsea fans who may be on this thread, I simply do not recognise the 1999, 2005, and 2012 winners of the European Cup as those teams did not win the top flight division the previous season.
