I am pleased to report that FIFA have had a sudden attack of realism and as a result, the latest country ranking tables show that England, no doubt as a result of their pathetically poor World Cup showing in Brazil, have dropped no less than TEN places to a new ranking of 20th, which is their lowest position since May 1996.

Poor showing or unrealistic expectations?
Personally I think the latter, we don't have a development structure and model as found in countries such as Germany.
English high expectation is based purely on one good showing 48 years ago.

Us Manchester United fans know that while Carrick does nothing fancy, is not a tricky playmaker or a complete midfield marshall, that he is a solid player in our midfield and has been one of our better players over the past few years.

Whenever I have seen him play on televised matches, he seems very slow with his decision making. The fact that he appeared to be one of the better players is indeed a reflection on the very poor standard in many positions in the team, which became more and more self-evident as the season progressed and more so, in the home matches where a surprisingly large number were lost.

Whilst he is not the man to launch counter attacks of 40 yards pinpoint passes like Scholes could do, he is a useful player and a solid figure in our midfield in a defensive role, sitting just in front of the back four.

Note that I said last few years - the includes 12/13 where we won the league and 11/12 where it was lost on goal difference.

Carrick is a player often criticised by fans of rival teams, because they don't watch him close enough or often enough to realise what he does do.

Every team has them, the player who others seem to wonder what on earth they do, but whose own fans know why they're in the team and the value they bring.

Talking about friendly matches I see Oldham won 8-1 last night but it were against non league team Curzon Ashton who play in Northern Premier League. (same division that Droylsden who only won two matches and got relegation from last season)

Since this game Oldham had played two more friendly matches, they beat Newcastle 2-1 on Tues night (15th July) sadly it was only pre-season friendly and not a cup game and today Oldham have been in action against Australia team Melbourne City and match finished 1-1 draw.

Thankfully the draw for the Euros qualification was made already, whoever England got in the draw.

Spain must have dropped a few rankings, losing those points from 2010 and only picking up a win against the Aussies.

I wonder if cleverly was captain as he intended keeping him on the field the longest. The rest of the team were completely changed at half time. With just cleverly paying more than half. Or maybe he's seen some leadership characteristics and wanted to give him a rehearsal, it's swell known van gaal hasn't decided on a captain yet.

Van Gaal was fuming by all accounts. My favourite was his rant at Ben Amos. When asked about the goalkeeping for the 60 yard goal

"What do you think?" he said. "I am nearly 63 years old and I run when the ball is in the air for four seconds when it flies from 50 metres."

According to Juan Mata he has banned use of all languages except English as well, which Mata was complimentary of.

Saints from doing really well last season will probably struggle this season after letting £100m worth of players go.

They will attempt to reinvest some of it but now potential selling clubs will jack up the price of new players knowing how much Saints have in the bank.

The nearer the season gets the more desperate they will become to make signings so players will be bought who aren't by any means first choice.

How are other people feeling about their teams pre-season?
From a Cardiff's fan point of view, our attack looks pretty impressive but I really worry about our defence. Loosing Caulker was a big blow and it looks like Medel is on his way too. Really hope we get at least one, hopefully two, defenders before the end of the window.

Just goes to show that not ever single Premier League footballer is how they come across in the media, well done that man.
