Germany broke a load of records:

It's the HTML code for a en dash which has been pasted into the posting box from another program, probably Microsoft Word which is a very amateur program for handling typography, or an amateur website with badly written code. The problem with pasting HTML is that the posting box on this website does not recognise HTML code pasted in, only plain text and BBcode.

A figure dash - (also called a hyphen) is what you get when you hit the - key on your keyboard and is usually the same width a numerical digit in the same typeface, though most typefaces used on the web do not obey the proper rules of typography.
A en dash – is the width of a lower case n in the same typeface.
A em dash — is even wider, the same width as a lower case m in the same typeface.

Among other uses, a en dash is the correct way to report a scoreline in soccer, i.e. 7–1 is correct, 7-1 is not and 7—1 is right out.
