Remind me why Australia joined the Asian Football Confederation. Oh yes, because they could not qualify otherwise so they have to join a weaker continent and rob one of their members of a rightful place.

Asia is a stronger continent than Oceania group.

Asia is a stronger continent than Oceania group.

Indeed, but part of a flawed system.

There are automatic World Cup places for four teams in the Asia group with only ten teams playing for those places. In the Oceania group, there is no automatic place and the winner has to go on and face a playoff, usually against bigger opposition.

So bb21 was entirely correct, Australia did move to the Asia group to achieve easier qualification and it was well documented as the reason at the time.

Meanwhile back at home UEFA have decided that financial fair play can be bent to favour large clubs if need be

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/27798163

Manchester City will be required to name only five home-grown players in a reduced 21-man squad for next season's Champions League.

City were hit with restrictions on their European squad in May, after breaching financial fair play rules.

The club had been due to name eight home-grown players but Uefa has bowed to pressure from players' union FIFPro.

------------------------

As for the World Cup I will metaphorically don the stars and stripes tonight in the hope of Portugal losing

This is even worse that what I originally heard, as from the information that you submitted, it was not the clubs, but the players union FIFPro who were instrumental in this change of decision.

It is about time that these overpaid prima-donnas were put firmly in their places and financial strictures that will not just be laughed off by them and long periods of suspension be suitably applied.

I have said it before and I will say it again. FFP is not there to promote financial fair play. It's there to keep the status quo. None of the big boys will ever be harmed by these regulations. And if they are given punitive sanctions they will be straight to court

I'm currently watching the very entertaining USA v Portugal match at the Manaus venue and I'm curious as to why there's a complete lack of draped flags anywhere in the stadium. It certainly detracts from the atmosphere when there's a lack of visual effects usually produced from the fans' efforts of adding to the occasion.

When England played their match at the same stadium the flags added to the visual atmosphere.

Have FIFA banned flags now? :(

What a goal that was by Jones! And coming just minutes after Ronaldo had ballooned a shot well wide!

England fans (and Germany fans) all seemed to have flags emblazoned with the names of their club sides. Perhaps the MLS being a fairly young competition means such traditions haven't really taken off amongst their travelling supporters- it's all cowboy hats and replica shirts!

2 - 1 USA

Not that I like the Americans, but it is funny seeing Portugal fall apart.

"Team USA" have been one of the highlights of the tournament so far. Just need to dispense with that ridiculous 'S' word now...

EDIT: Oh well, 95mins and Portugal somehow dig a goal out of somewhere... <(

Still, Portugal are as good as dead, and that is good enough for me. It's a great feeling knowing that the git Ronaldo is soaking in misery.

To me, Chile and Costa Rica must have been the biggest surprise package so far. USA not far behind. Seems like Klinsmann does have a few tricks up his sleeves.

I'm made up Chile are doing well after a visit there, my second cousin still lives there and is loving it. Chuffed Costa Rica haven't turned in to the push overs of Englands "Group Of Death". Feel bad for USA tonight, a real shame. Alan Hansen despite being a Liverpool legend did my head in with his attitude after the game tonight. He made a few smart ars*d comments.

Portugal didn't deserve to even be at the World Cup. The qualifiers where a complete shameful display and they barely made it to the group stage.

The team has no structure to it. The players do not have strategy nor ambition. The very few who had weren't selected for the team, are now injured or completely cornered by the opposing team. The manager is too soft with the training and too much attached to tradition (4-3-3 all the way since 1914).

Portugal was only doing well on the first 10min of the tournament. When Müller scored the first goal, the team ceased to exist.

I didn't even watched this last game. I was doing better sleeping at my bed after this exhausting weekend.

It's truth that the country is at a very low level of happiness and confidence after almost four years of austerity, but we would be doing better if the team didn't get to play in the finals. Frustration couldn't get anywhere worse than this, with such a poor display on an international match.

Kudos to England anyway. Although they are out of the tournament, they did very well in the "Death Group". The match against Italy was good to watch. :)

Why would you want the world's greatest player to be out of the tournament ?

Ronaldo is one of the few players I would pay hard-earned money to watch.

Because, and this is coming from someone who couldn't care less who qualifies or not, I'd rather teams went through on merit of performance rather than going 'OMG they have Ronaldo stay please'. Falcao and Ibra didn't get to the World Cup at all, both of whom are world class players yet with how good this World Cup has been no-one seems to care. I'm sure people will do the same with Portugal: Ronaldo goes and you still have Messi, Neymar, Pirlo etc to create attention; as well as a much better team in their place.

Ronaldo might be a great talent, but he lacks the humility of certain other past 'greats': Pele being the obvious example. He only really showed his abilities yesterday in one brief moment, leading several U.S. defenders on a merry dance... but nothing came of that move anyway.

This World Cup has shown you don't need the superstars to shine. You just need teams who want to attack. I would rather watch Costa Rica or Chile or Columbia than Portugal. With or without the show pony.

Talent alone does not make a player great.

Personality-wise he is rotten. The world's greatest player? Yeah, right.

Indeed, as a Liverpool supporter Suarez is one of the most amazing players I have ever been lucky enough to see play. Gary McAllister though was class personified. A brilliant player and a true gent.

So a good personality and no talent makes a player great ? Yeah right.

From what I have read in several sources Ronaldo has an excellent personality. People who have played with him and against him and his managers past and present cannot speak highly enough of him.

But perhaps you know better.

As for ability, he has a God-given talent.

Yes, he's the best.

International Press seem to have jumped these words from Ronaldo after the match with the US.

Ronaldo says that Portugal doesn't have enough quality

Cristiano Ronaldo admits that he never thought that it was ever possible to win the 2014 World Cup and acknowledges the fact that Portugal is a team "with limitations" but admits that he does not have "enough morale to speak".

Honestly and without mince words, Cristiano Ronaldo admits, after the compromising draw with Team USA (2-2), that Portugal does not have enough quality to compete for the title of world champion and that he never believed that the Portuguese team would have any chances.

"Maybe the others are better than us. I never thought that I could be a World Champion, sincerely. We have to be humble and recognize our capabilities", admitted the captain of the Portuguese team.

The "Balon d'Or 2013", still, had his own criticism and assumed that even him does not have "enough morale to speak", since he knows that he is not shining at his best level. "It was hard from the very beginning. Portugal was never assumed as a potential winner, so there was no pressure. It's obvious that we wanted to win and we had responsibilities, both players and the whole team. We did our best, but we couldn't achieve anything. We are sad and frustrated...", he declared.

Now, only a "miracle" on the last game of the group stage can qualify the Portuguese for the final stages. "Mathematically it is possible, though it is almost an impossible task. But, in football, anything can happen. We are sad because we wanted to do better. If we analyse the qualifiers and the play-off, there are no miracles. So, we knew that we would have a very complicated group stage".

Cristiano insisted in the thought that the "Seleção das Quinas" should not think about winning World Cups. "I am not self-righteous, I say what I have in mind. It can happen, but there are teams that are better than us. We wanted to give more, just like I said before, but there's still a chance. We'll play until the very last game", he finished, before agreeing that Portugal is a team of "average quality".

"Average, maybe yes. It would be a lie if I said that we are a top team. We have limitations, injuries, Pepe, Coentrão... that gives us plenty of limitations. We have an overly limited team. Without being at our best, we cannot compete against top teams", he justified.

Still, Ronaldo refuses criticism against him for playing while not being at his best physical conditions. "It would be easier for me to end an amazing year on my amazing club, with the Champions League and each individual title. But I presented myself to the task and don't want to justify myself with injuries. I'm here to help and I gave my contribution. We can't do more, we have to raise our heads and keep playing until the last game".

In the end, he denied the premise that his partners from the national team aren't applying theirselves to the tournament. "No one goes to a World Cup without the wish to show off his football, to shine, to run... That's unthinkable on this group, but there are things that are unachievable... or we run more, or we try to enhance our quality, many details. We need to raise our heads, understand that there are better teams than ours, and also players that are better than us".

Deducing someones 'personality' from the media and their on pitch performance is a bit of a stretch. Unless of course you've met Cristiano Ronaldo and been subjected to his rotten behaviour.

His on pitch behaviour is no worse than countless other world class players out there. What makes him any more rotten than them? That sly wink after Rooney was sent off in 2006? Just one small part of the whole Portugal team's game plan to wind Rooney up. Goes on all the time at all levels of the game. Earlier in that same game in 2006 Rooney had tried to get Ronaldo carded for a supposed dive.

Others have done far worse than Ronaldo. I see no evidence of a rotten personality. As I see no evidence of an angelic one. Can't sit in judgement on someone's personality without knowing them.

Where did I say he is worse than the others? Please don't put words in my mouth.

I don't need to meet someone to decide what they are like. I will make my mind up from all available sources I have.

I don't need to meet Gary Glitter to know that he has questionable morals, nor do I need to meet Mother Teresa to decide that she is someone I have plenty of respect for.
