Good effort from Arsenal tonight, best defensive display over 90 minutes for a long time. 2-0 on the night though, so they go out 3-3 on aggregate (away goals rule).

And with Bayern progress Malaga this evening, beating FC Porto 2-0. They join Real Madrid, Barca, PSG, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Galatasaray in Friday's QF draw.
Also tonight, Millwall beat Blackburn 1-0 in their FA Cup Sixth Round replay, they now face Wigan in the Semi-Final. I bet ESPN and ITV are going to be eager to televise that one!

I believe ITV have the choice of which game they would like to show, so ESPN will have Wigan v Millwall (which I think will be a better Semi final)

I wonder if anyone expected Galatasaray to make it to the last eight in this season's competition.

Spain aside, it's not the strongest looking line-up in Champions' League history. Bayern and Juve are also fair enough, but Malaga, Galatasaray, PSG and even Dortmund aren't that well known at continental level. I know Dortmund won it in the late 90s, and Gala won the UEFA Cup soon after, but it's not exactly the same power or prestige as something like the first four plus Milan, Man Utd, Liverpool and Ajax is it?

Malaga are quite a surprise package but they've done well of late; similarly Gala but they do have the likes of Altintop, Sneijder, Drogba and Melo in their ranks, by no means an average team. PSG are in essence a French Manchester City, they've got millions upon millions in their transfer kitty and have used it on the likes of Thiago Silva, Big Zlatan and a certain Mr D Beckham. Dortmund I think could well be as good as Barca, Man Utd etc in five years time, write them off at your peril. They're young, eager and have an excellent manager at the helm. Dependent on their draw I could see them in the SFs with ease.
Edit - I'll put that another way, it would have been more surprising to me personally if Arsenal had made it to the last 8, regardless of who they played to get there.

Dortmund are certainly dark horses for the competition. The Spanish pair aside, they look the strongest.

Now no British representation in the last 8 of the Champions League. Not so long ago, there were 3 in the last 4...:cry:

Arsenal 'bravely' exit the C.L and, surprise, surprise, there's no 'English' teams left in the last 8 (cue the P.L is the 'Greatest League' in the World speeches)...errm The Celtic Football Club (hooray) made it further than 'moneybags' Chelski and Manchester City, and as far as Manchester United and Arsenal...no mention...morons:roll:

Arsene Whinger says it's a wake up call for Premier League clubs. For once I agree with him - the Premiership is not a great league in comparison to the Spanish and German equivalents. And going further than AW, I'd venture to say it never has been...

100% agree, it was only 'the greatest league' due to Sky Sports covering it non stop every day. Give me League 2 football any day over the PL
Or even the championship, where there is only 9 point seperating the bottom 14 teams. The premiership has played around 10 less games yet there is 18 points seperating the bottom 14 there.
A few of us have started going to watch our local team in the Evo-Stik league rather than bother with the Premiership drivel. Far more enjoyable!
It's very trendy to say this sort of thing, but I could hardly agree less. The standard at League 2 and thereabouts is abominable. (Before you ask, I spent many years going to football at Conference Premier level or thereabouts). If you can get excited about Neanderthals hoofing the ball up and down the pitch, best of luck to you. Unfortunately I don't have any choice any more. The Premier League in the country in which I live is probably League 2 standard (not quite, but not far off).

Southend might be useless but I would sooner go to Roots Hall (or Fossetts Farm when it finally opens in 2042 ) than somewhere like Old Trafford. I would even be tempted to say the same about Goodison Park, but that's more for fear of the away side - whoever they may be - being unprofessional primadonnas, as has happened in two of the three international matches I have seen at Wembley.
You also tend to get a more passionate support at lower levels. My most recent visit to Roots Hall was a Championship relegation six-pointer against Barnsley in 2007 and even at 0-3 people didn't start leaving the stadium in droves, although it did go a bit quiet - until it became 1-3 (which it stayed

Some teams, I do admit, will just hoof the ball all the times (any teams managed by the tax dodger Evans) but the game is more 'purer' and as everyone earns near to a 'normal' wage then they feel they need to work harder for their living, unlike the prima donna's in the premier league who earn 30k for sitting on the bench week in, week out.
So your main moan is the money they get paid then.
I'd rather go watch the team I've supported all me life, just lucky enough they are in prem.
This whole I'd watch some other league team is just rubbish.
Settled in now ready for the Anzhi game. Badly need to win this.

Well, Inter v Spurs was one of the best games of football I've seen in years...
Let's be honest spurs started falling down and time wasting and were lucky to win the tie. Was great to watch though

Didn't see it, but I don't think it's fair that Adebayor's Away Goal won the tie. Why should Spurs have had 120 minutes to force one when Inter had only 90? I know that Inter would have had the home fans to cheer them on, but for the most part the team at home in the second leg is there because they were more successful in (an) earlier round(s) and is therefore a prize of sorts for doing so. Don't get me wrong; I'm glad they got through - the way things are going, they could be the British Isles' only candidate for European glory after tonight, and there will still be three rounds to play in two different competitions! - but it just doesn't seem fair.

I've never thought it fair. I'm not suddenly deciding this in relation to Inter v Spurs.
I've always believed goals scored in extra time should not count towards away goals, only those scored in normal time, otherwise gives an unfair advantage to the away team in the 2nd leg.

However extra time also gives the home team an unfair advantage as they get 33% longer playing time at their home ground...
