Don't tar everyone with the same brush. Reading have their fair share of idiot fans but you won't hear me calling them cocks.

Fair point mate, my apologies I know we have idiot fans seen them for myself! Just annoys me how we get slammed a small club and how we shouldn't be beating teams like yourselves, btw how is Collins in the team? Back pass of the season! :D

It's one of, in a joint way. Porstmouth vs Reading was 7-4 so is top with 11 but the number of 9 & 10 goal games are quite high.

Linky

Seems like that was some game :D

Forgot about Pompey Reading game, even though we recently discussed it in this thread, after chelsea won 8-0 I think it was.
Should be first up on MOTD I'd have thought

Villa need to do something quick, getting hammered by Chelsea and spurs, is not a big thing really, but hammered by Wigan is a worrying sign

A lot of it stems from Kébé's antics last season, and Brian defending him. I have a lot of time for Brian, I know him from years back but that was a major minus point for me.
As for Collins, I didn't really rate him in his first spell with us and always think he's an accident waiting to happen. Should have been Demel at RB, and Tomkins & Reid at CB.

The "socks" was a stupid thing to do I agree but the way Collison launched into Kebe was dangerous, could have broke his leg. Didn't help Nolan legging it over and screaming at him on the ground.

What's happened to McCartney? Injured? Would have played him at LB. Thought Noble was your best player IMO, always enjoyed watching him.

No he couldn't  He kicked him in the knee, and not particularly hard. Stupid, but not dangerous. Nolan could see it was nowhere near as bad as Jimmy made out.

McCartney is only just back fit, and O'Brien has done well covering for him. Noble has been excellent for a long time. A lot of annoyance that he hasn't even got an England squad call-up, when players like Sterling & Livermore have got in.

It's rare that an England manager looks beyond Manchester United/City, Liverpool and Chelsea. It'd be interesting to see how much scouting work they do though since it's pretty obvious the manager can only be in one place at a given time.

Just had this sent to me:
Newcastle Utd have just made an official statement regarding their sponsorship, having decided that its just ridiculous having Virgin written across the front of your shirt when you've just been f****d 7 times in 90 minutes....

Just watching MOD- excellent goalfest tonight (Has SS4 boycotted it for the third programme in a row !!!)

However good a 0-0 is talked up there is no substitute for a goal bonanza in my view.

Quote Gary Lineker....."Will Villas seasonal good hidings continue" - love it !!!

I have to be honest SS4, from what MOTD showed, Villa were beyond woeful, they didn't even defend the corner Wigan scored from. Looks like thousands left when Wigan socred their third in the 56th minute.

They must be psychic as there were no further goals and the MOD coverage virtually ended after the third Wigan goal.

Regarding the Spurs game I think Bale was unlucky, it looked like a penalty to me.

He still went in with studs so deservedly red. Nolan can't really complain after some of his challenges in the Upton Park game and today.

Surprised Noble hasn't been called up, been consistent for a while now. Suppose you always get overlooked for the top 4-6 clubs.

I liked "The 12 Goals of Christmas" :D

Looking at their coverage of it, Wigan fought hard and Villa well... As much as I'm a fan of Stephen Ireland (I didn't want him to leave Man City) he didn't appear to have a good game and his foul right on the touch line was definitely a penalty.

To be honest looking at some of the games on show (I stopped watching when Spurs came out) the quality of the officials is once again rather shocking. Aside from Ireland's foul which the referee had an outstanding view of, Stoke had a fairly obvious hand ball shout denied and their sending off was very debatable, given how their player steps between the legs of the Southampton player who is on the ground. I understand the ref may consider it all about "the intention" but considering he didn't actually make any contact with the player who went down under another challenge seconds before he comes in I find it a fairly hard to understand. Speaking of intentions, the Nasri incident was harsh - especially considering the foul on him from Bassong. Yes they get in each others faces, however much they want to say it was the final bit when Nasri's head goes forward I'm not buying it. If he wanted to headbutt him I'm fairly sure he would have hit the bleeding target. Bassong should have been given a second yellow for his conduct post foul and then he wouldn't have had a hand in Norwich's third goal. On the subject of Norwich's goals, their first one clearly was unjust as there was no way Kompany committed a foul on the edge of the box. Don't even get me started on that ridiculous back-pass in which their goalkeeper had to palm it over the cross bar - how on earth was that not penalised?

What bugs me with regards to criticizing officials is that the likes of Sir Rednose McTaggart can say what he want's in press conferences with impunity whereas other managers get letters from the FA demanding an explanation as to why they said whatever - usually why they said the officials are useless and highlighted the reasons why.

If Baconface got treated the same as every other manager then people would have more faith in the FA and people would actually have a better opinion of ole rednose himself, though that would mainly be because he would be a lot quieter. An example of unfair treatment was two seasons ago when McTaggart got a five game ban, so what happens? He's on a bleeding phone to the touchline all through four of the games and when he was at Wembley was on a headset and walkie talkie - the FA didn't take any action for this blatant disregard of their punishment and yet they came down hard on Arsne Wenger when he had the gall to use a phone at some point during a game...

Anyway my original intention was to discuss the games and not get into a rant about that club (which by the way is usually referred to as from Salford given it's close proximity to the housing areas of Ordsall & Weaste - at one point I was working on just the other side of the canal from the swamp. Personally I prefer to call them Trafford Rovers 8-) )

So to go back a few paragraphs, the standard of the officials is still clearly appalling - I mean look at what happened in the Huddersfield game earlier, he gave the same player two yellow cards and never sent him off. Then again I think they outdid themselves a few years ago when a referee sent someone off using a B&Q till receipt :D Though that was a very low level league, linky. The FA are soon going to have to start taking notice that the officials who may very well be trying their best, are making mistakes which can cost teams league titles, cups or even their place in the league and all of which is crucial to a teams existence as after all bragging rights are worth nothing if the team doesn't exist having been unfairly relegated.

Don't get me started on that particular matter again..

Manchester and Salford are both long established historical cities. Trafford as such is only a name given to the administrative local authority area that covers many such established settlements in the same way that Tameside is another similarly named example in the conurbation of this part of the North-West.

I would be rather annoyed if you referred to my favourite non-league side, Hyde, as Tameside United....<(

I learn something new every day. So Nolan has the diagnostic ability to assess an injury merely by looking at it, without recourse to any medical training. This sounds like something out of the childrens TV series...Merlin..

The FA didnt take action against Arsene. His touchline ban was a UEFA (champions league) issued ban. It only applied to UEFA matches and it was UEFA who banned him further for using phone/ walkie talkie

I have no intention of doing so Paul, my remarks were a bit tongue in cheek as I didn't get involved in the earlier debate :D

Fair enough but why didn't the FA take action against Fergie given how a precedent had been set by UEFA in that case, after all it is the same situation.

I think that both the FA and UEFA treat their own organisations as completely separate entities and deal with matters that are seen under their own specific jurisdictions, without recourse to anything that occurs under the aegis of another organisation.

I'm replying on my phone, so apologise for the poor quoting.
It's clear from the footage (viewable on YouTube) that Collison barely connected. Kébé didn't go to ground until Collison shoved him over, so fairly obvious that he wasn't badly injured.

It is well documented for those who deal with sporting injuries that the "adrenalin" of the situation can mask quite serious injury - players even carrying on with a broken leg - but when the situation changes and they have time to realise they are injured the full pain "kicks in". Rather like Viking "berserkers".

What a novel way to test for injuries..."shoved him over". Perhaps a way to evaluate the reactions of the patient , prior to being seen by a Doctor?

Perhaps this novel method of treatment pre-assessment will be one that may find universal acceptance in the Accident and Emergency Departments of Britain, before the "Doctor Nolan's" of the Health Service come over to visually-only assess the injury...:D:D

When I saw the challenge at full speed on TV I thought red straight away, but when you looked closer he stamped his foot between the players feet. Personally Stoke have no chance to overturn the red card. The challenge seconds before hand ,imo, was a good, but a bit heavy, challenge. Maybe the referee had a poor game (no surprise it was Prattenburg in charge)

Speaking of intentions, the Nasri incident was harsh - especially considering the foul on him from Bassong. Yes they get in each others faces, however much they want to say it was the final bit when Nasri's head goes forward I'm not buying it. Don't even get me started on that ridiculous back-pass in which their goalkeeper had to palm it over the cross bar - how on earth was that not penalised?

Nasri's red was harsh, but again it wont be overturned, he moved his head, which was foolish, and I agree with Bassong should of been given a 2nd yellow for his conduct with Nasri.
Kompany made a good challenge in the build up to (I think) Man City 2nd goal but what saved him from conceding a free kick, he won the ball fairly.
That back pass, by law should of been an indirect free kick to Man City, but Mark Bunn done the only thing he could of done, tipped the ball over the bar or he would of conceded an embarrassing own goal.

What bugs me with regards to criticizing officials is that the likes of Sir Rednose McTaggart can say what he want's in press conferences with impunity whereas other managers get letters from the FA demanding an explanation as to why they said whatever - usually why they said the officials are useless and highlighted the reasons why.

There is 1 reason for this, the FA are scared of McTaggart

So to go back a few paragraphs, the standard of the officials is still clearly appalling - I mean look at what happened in the Huddersfield game earlier, he gave the same player two yellow cards and never sent him off.

The most strange thing about that situation is Simon Grayson went to the 4th official and said thats his 2nd yellow, where's the red, yet the 4th official refused to even check his notes and then tell the referee he made a mistake and that is his 2nd yellow card and a red should of followed

Being somewhat of a mathematician, I was quite interested what the goals conceeded would be today, following on from 8 and then 4.

Both Villa and Norwich have lost there last 3, in which, Norwich have Lost by 1 goal each time, meaning they have lost by a total of 3 goals, where as villa have lost there's by 8, 4 and 3, meaning they have lost by a total of 15 goals...

Both Chelsea and Newcastle representatives in talks about Demba Ba moving to the Blues. I know there are some Newcastle fans on here who won't be happy but with that clause hanging around ever since he signed, it was inevitable.

Indeed he did, my issue was with the free kick given unfairly to Norwich in which they scored their first goal. Kompany won the ball cleanly and yet a free kick was awarded.

The most strange thing about that situation is Simon Grayson went to the 4th official and said thats his 2nd yellow, where's the red, yet the 4th official refused to even check his notes and then tell the referee he made a mistake and that is his 2nd yellow card and a red should of followed

It seems there may be a possible explanation to this one, he didn't book the correct player (Helan) for diving but booked the player adjacent to him... Still doesn't excuse him making such a monumental balls up, then again anyone remember the Di Canio sending off? :D

Which clause? something like a minimum release or a higher club? It would be a shame for him to go and I think it will severely affect Newcastle. If he does go to Chelsea it could go one of two ways, he gets in the first team and becomes one of their greatest signings or he barley gets a look in and fades away - like some talent which got lured there has done over the years.

On the bright side, if they get enough wonga for him (sorry, couldn't resist), they may be able to tempt Andy Carroll back.

He must have a very good agent, as David Sullivan has said that the worst business decision he's ever made was Demba Ba's contract.

Yeah, minimum release clause, was always quoted at around £7-7.5m

Did you use a geometric progression and guess 2 or an arithmetic one and guess 0? Or perhaps some weird polynomial that excel always manages to do :p

Weird polynomials as you say are the spice of life to mathematicians and tend to develop matters of a higher plane of thought.

Be careful in using the term "weird polynomials" on this Football thread, as someone less gifted than either of us in the understanding of such terminology and also knowing of your own specific football allegiance, may well assume that you are talking about the current defensive game-plan that is currently adopted by Aston Villa to combat the goal-scoring tendencies of the opposing teams....:D:D.
