I wouldn't really describe Asia as a lesser continent nowadays. :P

Anyway, the result was home side Sanfrecce Hiroshima beat Oceanic champions Auckland City 1-0, and will meet African champions Al-Ahly in the quarterfinal on Sunday.

Auckland City receive US$500,000 prize money.

We're seemingly biased against Platini because he's seemingly biased against us :p
The world's against us, of course, and have conspired to prevent any British team winning an international trophy through the "years of hurt".

Either that or the UK national sides are universally rubbish, and the UK administrators have no idea how to run things.

I suspect it more a case of the latter rather than the former :p

And as everyone knows, they (well, the English) are especially rubbish at penalties <D

It's probably fair to say that UEFA didn't want a second consecutive Man Utd v Chelsea (and therefore all-English) finale to the Champions' League (2008/9), but otherwise I've never seen any real bias against us, and even then I wouldn't have suggested that constitutes bias - especially considering the various claims surrounding Chelsea's semi that year. Platini just happens to be French and is therefore an "enemy" by default.

Here's a table. Percentagewise, England are the worst with 1 out of 7 (not counting the slew of teams who've only had one or two shootouts and lost it/both), with the Netherlands not far behind with 1 out of 5.

The best (again ignoring one-timers) are Saudi Arabia with 4 out of 4, Germany with 5 out of 6, and the US with 4 out of 5.

If you think you've got problems check the Scottish Football and Rugby Teams

Scotland's football team have never had a penalty shootout in competitive play (and neither have Wales, Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland).

Interesting; thank you for bringing this up. It is quite clear that the English need to practice more then - especially when the one shoot-out we did win was in a match that we would have lost in normal time but for a refereeing error...

Was the header by Clint Dempsey that led to the second goal credited to him as being the goalscorer or was it classified as on own-goal against their goalkeeper, with the ball then rebounding into the net off him ?

own goal by goalkeeper

Republic Of Ireland have had two. They beat Romania in the 1990 World Cup and lost to Spain in 2002.

I see that (according to the BBC) Mad Uncle Hamish is claiming that his noisy neighbours are being awarded too many penalties. a) Where have we heard that sort of conspiracy theory before? b) It would now take a very bold referee to award them a penalty this weekend. (Who are they playing, I wonder?)

He really needs a touchline ban for it.

In an ideal world a touchline ban would include no communication with the bench since in the days of mobile phones and radios getting sent to the stands is an inconvenience rather than a punishment

Whilst I do feel that the raising of this issue at this time with the suggestions and motives behind it are wrong, it does offer an interesting comparison whilst everyone feels that united get all the decisions all the time. Of course, without looking at every decision from both teams in detail we cannot really ascertain much - as the teams that create the most chances and spend more time in the danger area are always going to get more penalties - I don't think that other managers would be squeaky clean either and I wouldn't have put it past Mancini (who also loves a good mind game) having risen similar points before Key matches - it's not just Fergie!

just seen Cardiff won 4-1 tonight away at Blackburn. moves them 4 points clear at top of league.
Would be great for the premiership to have the south wales derby.

It does have a South Wales derby nearly every season, last time I checked a map Port Talbot and Llanelli were South Wales ;) :p

I can see a lot of goals in the manchester derby tomorrow, If united defend like they did last few games, City will score more than they did last year at Old Trafford.

Typically high profile/derby games are goal fests or very dull (and 0-0)

Meanwhile the ref at the Emirates may as well come out in a red shirt for the rest of the game. He's made his allegiance quite clear

I've heard the first Arsenal penalty rather resembled something to make Tom Daley proud.

Full time from Villa Park, should have won that though.

Thankfully everyone around us isn't doing too well either. Except Norwich who we play next

There needs to be retrospective bans on diving. Sooner rather than later

A ban could help eliminate diving, but there should be action taken after the game for dives. Perhaps all dives could be looked at by a panal at the FA with the referee and his assistants for the game present and could ask him if he knew it was a dive what would he do to the player who dived, then award the card there and then. But this action has to be done within 72 hours of the game taken place so if there is any bans that need to be handed out it will take place the very next game

Personally I think it should be a straight red card for all divers, and a potential points deduction for it too (I know that sounds harsh but it would dissuade people from doing it - I would hope!)

Perhaps something football can gain from rugby is the "citing" system.
copied text from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citing_commissioner
In rugby union, a citing commissioner is an independent official, appointed by the competition organizer, the union in which the match is taking place, or the International Rugby Board, who is responsible for citing players who commit foul play which is not detected by the match officials.

Teams may bring offences to the attention of the citing commissioner for review. The citing commissioner may cite a player even if the referee has already dealt with the issue (except where he has ordered a player from the field). When there is no citing commissioner, the teams participating in the match have the right to cite players, but may only cite a player for an infringement which the match officials have not dealt with.

A player who is cited is called to a hearing to show cause why he should not be treated as having been sent off for the alleged offence. The player is entitled to be represented. The hearing usually takes place before three independent persons nominated by the union or the competition organizer, and is generally convened within a week of the match in question. If the offence is proven, the panel issues a penalty, usually in the form of a suspension for a number of weeks.

There is disagreement on the fairness of citing, as a player who is cited is liable to receive a ban from all competitions for several weeks if found guilty, despite the fact that if the offence was detected during the match, he would have been likely to have received a caution and temporary suspension (yellow card) rather than being sent off.

Good win for Oldham this afternoon as they beat Colchester 2-0 and they are now 7 points ahead of 21st team Shrewsbury in League One table.

Hyde doing quite nicely too.
A couple of opinions:-
1)"Diving" by definition cannot be assessed by replay, if only because you need to be able to assess intent. Players fall over, particularly "balance" players at speed. If there was contact from an opposition player, however slight, it was a foul and the appropriate sanction given; if there was no contact, the incident could be interpreted as simple tumble, and play waved on.
2) Torres was not made welcome at Chelsea, where key players saw him as part of an attempt to rebuild, and potentially get rid of them These players worked to get rid of VB, and replace him with a weak manager who was their "friend". They won trophies, but this was little to do with the manager. The club now has a stronger manager, who does not need to listen to this clique; indeed, one significant member has left, and two are injured. Perhaps because of this, Torres will become more settled, and successful.
