Anyway, I don't usually comment on all the Premiership games, as there is only so much football I can watch each week! (And after watching Scunthorpe United get mullereed most weekend in the last 2 or 3 years, my appetite for football is somewhat diminished )

I bet you're looking forward to this weekend, eh? ;) I know I am.

Good result for us tonight and was sorely needed. Lets hope we can build on it when we play Fulham next week but our squad is threadbare and I hope Ba isnt too damaged. We just need everyone back

If we can get 'past' Arbroath next week , a tie with Roth Ravers (Raith Rovers in reality) awaits, Dundee United v Rangers should be an interesting one, to see where the 'newco' are at

The following games have been selected for TV coverage for the FA cup
SATURDAY 5 JANUARY 2013
Brighton & Hove Albion v Newcastle United (12.30) - ITV
West Ham United v Manchester United (5.15) - ITV

SUNDAY 6 JANUARY 2013
Swansea City v Arsenal (1.30) - ESPN
Lincoln City or Mansfield Town v Liverpool (4.00) - ESPN

MONDAY 7 JANUARY 2013
Cheltenham Town or Hereford United v Everton (7.45) - ESPN

I have 2 concerns about these games selected, that being West Ham v Man United and Swansea v Arsenal. Why do the tv companies ALWAYS have to select all-premier league ties in round 3. I understand if it was Liverpool v Man united, Arsenal v Spurs etc as its a derby game and will be wanted to watched by many. Why couldn't they show Barrow or Macclesfield v Cardiff, Crawley v Reading, Luton v Wolves or Peterborough v Norwich instead of the premier league ties??

It's because unfortunately the Premier League is seen as more popular than the lower leagues and brings more money to them (more people watching the adverts etc) Then again I'm surprised that ITV picked Brighton Vs Newcastle rather than Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal or similar.

Also they are not just broadcasting to the UK. All over the world there are probably tens of millions of so-called Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal "fans", but not many Barrow fans or Macclesfield fans.

Money talks.

Do people still watch ITV's pathetic attempts at football coverage? I'd have thought that the only reason people still watch ITV is in the hope that one day Roy Keane will deck Adrian Chiles.

How do you feel about being drawn away to Nottingham Forest ? I remember losing 1-0 to them in the 1990 League Cup Final at Wembley..<(

^^ Is not bad draw for Oldham as it could been worse and we got League One team :( I do think we could beat them or even take it into replay but knowing Latics they probably lose 3 or 4-0, We should also take quite lot of fans to Nottingham rough guess is 2,000 fans but that if the don't ask us to pay £28 pound as I think that normal league price to pay at Notts Forest <(

Do anyone know how far Notts Forest ground is from Nottingham train station as I was thinking of going to that match if it easy to walk to ground?

Nottingham station to Nottingham Forest's City Ground is just over a mile I think, certainly Google says so. On the banks of the River Trent. There's only one 'Notts' football club in Nottingham and the play in black and white ;)

I have it on with the sound firmly off. Audio commentary comes from 5Live more often than not and since the radio is ahead if I hear goal I can pay attention to the TV

But yes, football on the BBC please as long as it's on a freeview HD channel

Football instead of the other rubbish on TV (including Stricty can't Dancing and that east end dodgy soap! )

(PS - I do know the real names of both mentioned above!)

I'm not at the JPT quarter finals today to cheer on Preston at Gigg Lane, but Bury games are always nothing short of madness so I'm grateful (pretty ironic considering I'll be at the Millwall game ) but I'm watching it on Sky Sports COYW!

There is a match in the Conference Premiership tonight which reflects chages in fortunes from the previous season. Macclesfield, who were in League 2 last season, are at home to Hyde, who were in the Conference North last season.

Such matches are always interesting to note.

Champions League

Borussia Dortmund 1...Manchester City 0

So having only gained three points from a possible eighteen, Manchester City have not even qualified for the Europa League from this group.

Now Manchester City are out of Europe all together I wonder if we'll see them really push on in the league. To be fair, they had a nightmare group and it took Trafford years to win the Champions League after winning the PL in 1993.

Has anyone seen Kolarov singing Jingle Bells yet? Amazing.

This below is a interesting story, being at the game I did hear chanting that might be deemed offensive but it's always the same at Huddersfield. However, can you imagine the condemnation in the media and on here if this has been the other way round......dirty ol' Leeds and all that....

My personal on view on this was to highlight the fact that the current English Premiership Champions with financial resources that are the envy of most teams world-wide and with a previous year's experience in the Champions League already behind them last season to warn them of the differences in playing teams in the English Premiership and those from other European leagues, have again not progressed as far as one would have hoped in this current campaign. The manager is well aware of what tactics are employed by teams in Europe at a high level, having managed abroad previously.

So whilst your posting refers to "news that actually matters", my response to that would be if the performance of the English Premiership Champions has been found wanting in this current Champions League campaign, by only managing to obtain three points from a possible eighteen available in this early group stage, and is not "news that actually matters", then I find myself at a loss as to what other English football-related matter would qualify for that statement, as surely this matter will be viewed abroad as a reflection of the paucity of team tactics employed by an English club who are Champions in their home Premier League, xenophabially referred to as the best league in the world by certain English media sources.

But that being said, this is my own particular view on the matter and I would strenuously defend the right of other forum members to hold an entirely opposite view to mine.

So you go on and on and on and on about how bad the stereotypes are against Leeds yet you then go and say something like that against another team? OK... I can only imagine how you'd react if I saw a Huddersfield fan and said 'but it's always the same at Leeds'.

Although ironically contained Ajax, who presented problems for United last year but according to the media were poor quality and it was United struggling. Have the media learnt their lesson and respect the likes of Ajax? I knew last year they were no pushovers, the media acted as if we'd thrash 'em 5-0.

Whilst I can acknowledge that they had a tricky group, on paper they're probably only inferior to Real Madrid and they've got to be disappointed in their performance, once again falling at the first hurdle.

And I take it 'Trafford' is a reference, probably derogatory if it's coming from you, knowing your views on my team, to United, who of course did the treble in 99?

I'll be honest and say I don't blame Man City for not wanting to qualify for the Europa League - it's a lot like the League Cup in that all it really achieves is clogging your fixture card alongside more important competitions (like the FA Cup and Premier League) - the EL is far too big (it now goes to a round of 32, as opposed to the round of 16 in the UCL), which means to get to the final City would be on Thursday and Sunday duty from February to May, not ideal when compared to one day a week on Saturday / Sunday. If I was the club's overlord I know I'd rather focus on a domestic double than play 9 midweek games in a competition that I don't think anyone bar UEFA holds in high regard. It's great for above average European teams (like Fulham a couple of years back, and Middlesbrough before them, and the Gers before them ;)), but as a team who a trying to prove themselves world class, I think I'd rather fall at the first hurdle than only be seen to be good enough for a secondary competition.

You've never been to a Huddersfield v Leeds game them. Or Lids, L**ds, Weeds and various Jewish names they call us.

I like Town as a club, know loads of their fans but they become different animals when they play Leeds. The anti-semitic chanting i've just become immune too, although I come from a large Jewish area of Leeds (Alwoodley) i'm not Jewish myself and although you can still take offence to the chants i'm sure if doesn't have the same affect.

Strangly it's only Huddersfield that take this approach. Being a Leeds fan, we've only got the breathe out of place and we are criminals so it's interesting to see how other fans are dealt with.

Yep so it was a good 6 years between winning the PL in 93 and having many years of dominance domestically before they broke through in Europe. Trafford wasn't derogatory, it was just the area where the club is. I do alot of subbie work for Manchester City Council and I can tell you MUFC is not in Manchester. Greater Manchester yes, but the city of Manchester, no. That said, I guess it's hardly important anyway.

I think the bigger issue for Man City might be that they have failed to even get out the group stages. Last season they were probably a little unlucky but this season they've flopped, even in a hard group.

With Man Utd resting players tonight it will be an interesting derby on Sunday.

Especially when one of the teams has fallen far in recent years. Late Championship side Plymouth Argyle losing 3-0 to League freshers Fleetwood Town was a rather eyecatching result recently.

Plymouth are an example of very poor leadership from directors.
They gambled a lot of money on England getting world cup 2018 with infrastruture upgrades. They were also paying well beyond their income on wages.
Plymouth got rid of all their players, and bought in players who had no football league experience between them.

Looks like another hare-brained scheme from Platini has been given the go-ahead...

Uefa to hold 2020 European Championship across continent

Football's 2020 European Championship tournament will be held in a number of cities across the continent, Uefa has announced.

It means there will be no one country hosting the tournament.

The Football Association has already put forward Wembley to European governing body Uefa as a possible venue for the final.

Uefa's executive committee took the decision at a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday.

Wales, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland have also expressed their interest to Uefa in staging matches.

Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino told a press conference after the meeting: "Some important decisions have been taken.

"Uefa Euro 2020 will be staged across the continent, in various major cities, following a decision taken today. A Euro for Europe follows an initial idea by Uefa president Michel Platini.

"The response has been extremely positive from all the national associations."

He added the bidding process for the host cities would start in March and decisions would be made in the spring of 2014.

Europe may be a small continent but it is still a continent and surely fitting a plan like this into one summer is asking too much of the varying participants? By the time we reach the Quarter Finals the teams involved will surely be jetlagged and unable to play at their best, meaning that the showcase of Europe's finest will become a mere example of mediocrity. now, it could be argued that this emphasises the need for squad depth, but is that really enough to justify this?

If it works, then fine. But I highly doubt it will.

Jetlagging won't be an issue as the timezones are not far apart (and the flights won't be more than about 4 hours).

Consider that in 2012 two of the host cities, Poznań and Donetsk, were just under 1000 miles apart—that's the same distance as London to Lisbon, or Rome to Copenhagen. And far, far less than some of the distances used in the World Cup in the USA in 1994, or Russia in 2018.

It's not as big or unusual a problem as you make out.

Meanwhile from Deutsche Welle (seemingly without the anti-Platini bias endemic in this country)

Europe's football governing body UEFA plans to stage the 2020 European Championship in cities across the continent. The move is meant to ease the financial burden of hosting such a major sporting event.

The UEFA executive committee approved the plan at a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland on Thursday.

"UEFA Euro 2020 will be staged across the continent, in various major cities, following a decision taken today," UEFA Secretary General Gianni Infantino said, describing the tournament as "a Euro for Europe."

"The response has been extremely positive from all the national associations," he added.

Easing hosting costs

UEFA President Michel Platini initially floated the idea publicly before the final of Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland, saying the tournament could involve "12 or 13 cities across Europe" and that most of the 53 member nations were in support of it.

The former French national team captain had said a pan-continental Euro 2020 could reduce hosting costs in tough economic times.

"It will be easier from a financial aspect - one stadium per host city," said Platini in June.

Starting at Euro 2016 in France, the tournament is to expand to 24 teams from the traditional 16.

"[Euro 2020] is the 60th anniversary of the European football championship - obviously the fact that the Euro moves to 24 teams bears additional burdens on the host nations, the requirements are becoming bigger and bigger," Infantino said.

Bidding for the 2020 host cities is to begin in early 2013, with the process expected to take around a year, he added.

Three of the last four European Championships have been held in two countries, though usually it has been staged in one.

A single objection

The only country to object to the change was Turkey, which had hoped to win the right to host the tournament. Azerbaijan and Georgia been expected to launch a bid to become joint hosts in 2020, along with a three-way bid from Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

Turkey is also bidding to host the Summer Olympics in the same year, though the International Olympic Committee has said that it opposes the idea of a single country hosting two major sporting events in short succession.

German approval

The president of the German Football Association (DFB) Wolfgang Niersbach expressed his approval of the plan on Thursday.

"We expected the [executive committee's] decision and regard it as positive," said Niersbach, who added that a German city would bid to become one of the hosts.

Club World Cup started today, and is also the first Fifa tournament using goal line technology. The 2 teams playing today are from lesser continents (one of the teams are only part timers)
Chelsea enter next week at the semi final stage.
