Latics are away to Crewe tonight and I hoping they get something out of that game as we not win in last 4 games and only win two in 19 matches, we do have good record against Crewe as Latics have won 4 of last five meetings against them so hopely we can win tonight but draw will be good anywhere.

Ah, he failed to award a penalty at Old Trafford, which is contrary to McTaggart's rulebook so I suppose it was inevitable. If he'd at any point awarded a penalty to Tottenham for even the most blatant handball, I presume he'd be refereeing in the Outer Hebrides pub team Sunday league for all eternity.

Although, taking tongue out of cheek, he didn't have a great game at Old Trafford, so entirely predictable that he should get a lower league game.

The referee's on the PL list are the only ones that officiate in PL matches. However, they are occasionally assigned matches outside the PL as well.

Just because a ref is in charge of a lower league match, does not mean he is being punished ....

Scunthorpe United for 45 minutes looked to be doing the rest of league 1 a favour by beating Tranmere Rovers. Took the lead, restricted Rovers and generally looked good. The second half though ....

All the usual frailties came back. Can't defend set pieces, can't string 3 passes together, giving away needless fouls, and when we do get a chance, unable to finish ....

It's going to be a long season ....

Pl refs are often sent to the lower leagues for games where there has been problems between the two teams on the pitch in previous games.

My wife asked me to watch the second half of the Cluj v Manchester United game, whilst I was taking a break and that part of the match seemed reminiscent of the Italian League matches of the 1970's where one side, having a single goal lead, spent much of the remainder of the match idly passing the ball from player to player ad infinitum.

Absolutely nothing at all like watching the cut and thrust of English League football.

Fortunes can change quickly...Blackpool won 3-2 away at Hull City last night.

Hmmmm, remember the Italy v England match in the Euros? The one where England spent the best part of 2 hours watching Pirlo pass the ball round them? Bloody effective way of winning a football match I'd call it, and one which the England side would do well to learn.

From the point that you make, quite possibly, and one that Manchester United certainly made part of their game plan, in order not to have yet another recent European debacle as last season when their results in both the Champions League and the Europa League were very poor indeed.

But from an entertainment point of view, that match was not one that I shall remember and I am thankful that it was only the second half that I watched.

Hmm, the comments by Eddie Mitchell (Bournemouth chairman) strike a chord with me ....

"I would urge our supporters to recognise the time and effort that Paul and Shaun invested in the first team and their unwavering determination to produce an attractive brand of football.

"As chairman of AFC Bournemouth, I have personally recognised the direction in which they were trying to take the team in terms of tactics and style of play, and throughout their time in charge they have had my full support."

2 of the teams trying to play attractive brand of football, in other words, just pass the ball around, are struggling quite badly, even in the early stages of the season. They are currently 20th and 21st in the table. One of the good things that's happening at Bournemouth though is that they are scoring at a rate of 1.2 goals a game*, compared to Scunthorpe's 0.7 goals per game*

^^^^ Yeah very good win for Latics last night and well done to 354 Latics fans who what to Crewe too, the next two matches will be harder then Crewe as we got Preston at Home on saturday witch they can bring nearly 3,000 with them and they are doing well so far in LG 1, then is Sheffield United away on 13th October who haven't lost let in League one this season but we did won at they ground back in March so hopely same thing happening again.

Yes. We played a lot of free flowing football in the first half that kept Tranmere on the backfoot. However, in the second half, we struggled to string passes together, forgot how to defend and were unwilling to get stuck in generally ....

Peter Ridsdale banned from being company director

Football club chairman Peter Ridsdale has been disqualified from acting as a company director for seven and a half years, the Insolvency Service has said.

His sports consultancy collapsed in 2009 owing £442,353 in tax.

An inquiry found that the 60-year-old channelled payments from football clubs into his personal bank account instead of a company account.

Mr Ridsdale, now chairman of Preston North End, said his lawyers were studying advice he was given.

The ban follows an Insolvency Service investigation. The finding does not relate to his footballing duties as chairman of various clubs.

Mr Ridsdale said the disqualification, for which he has given an undertaking, was "a result of ongoing issues with a personal matter which occurred in 2009".

The ban prevents Mr Ridsdale from acting as a director, but also from taking part - directly or indirectly - in the promotion, formation or management of a company.

A spokesman for the Insolvency Service said: "It is up to Mr Ridsdale or the club to decide what his work is and whether or not he is involved in the management or control of the club. We do not know what his terms and conditions are."

In a statement, Mr Ridsdale said: "I am currently undertaking a role of Chairman of Football at Preston North End but am not a director nor at any time have I sought to be one.

"The issues that have brought about this voluntary undertaking are currently in the hands of my lawyers who are dealing with all outstanding issues including the professional advice that was given to both myself and my personal company at the time."

A spokesman for Preston North End said: "We are aware of it [the finding] but cannot say anything at the moment."

Mr Ridsdale has previously been chairman of Leeds United, Barnsley and Cardiff City football clubs.

This has been on the cards for a while now. Perhaps this will knock some sense into certain other chairmen who think nothing of bending the rules to benefit themselves and make their club appear (one of) the all-that-matters entity (or entities) in the game.
