Yes, it's ridiculous.
Problem is, when you submit your accounts every year to UEFA in order to offer participation in European competition, you are fully aware of the rules and the possibility of this situation.
Obviously in 2005, this was the case with Liverpool. However, UEFA agreed that you should be able to defend your trophy and was classed as an extreme circumstance. The rule was then changed.
In this case, Newcastle would not be defending the trophy, so I presume any special dispensation would be refused. It's not impossible that they would try though.

Fantastic result for Chelsea that shame I had to come to work and miss the second half.
Even if they win it and we finish 4th and miss out on the CL - I dont care. The fact that we are finishing 4th is good enough for me considering everyone wrote us off at the start of the season. We have had a great season in fact its been ****ing AMAZING!

I got to say Danny Mills got it spot on with his analysis, John Terry's red card actually helped Chelsea as it forced them to sit back and not go to Barcelona and force the gaps that Barcelona exploit with deadly fashion time and time again
Not quite the point though. Financially, the Champions League is the holy grail of European club football. You play 38 games over a season, with the basic premise that 4th place is the final slot. If you do gain 4th place and dont gain participation, the money loss is tremendous, despite deserving at least the place in the playoffs.
As of last season (and it is still the same next season as the contracts stand) if we compare just reaching the group stage.
Champions League
Participation in group stage: 3,900,000 Euro
Each match in group stage: 550,000 Euro
Victory in group match: 800,000 Euro
Draw in group match: 400,000 Euro
Europa League
Participation in group stage: 640,000 Euro
Each match in group stage: 60,000 Euro
Victory in group match: 140,000 Euro
Draw in group match: 70,000 Euro
So if you qualified for the group stage of the Europa in lieu of that Champions League place, the penalties can be enormous and not deserved.

Yes they did that at the expense of Manchester City who had qualified for the extra place through the fair play scheme. I would say that they picked us because Everton were the other choice team to drop and didn't want to start riots, but that is just nonsense looking back and it was that we had an "extra" place, though we should have been given something in return. Boy isn't it funny how memories tend to warp and become distorted over time?
EDIT: Removed rant about how Barca scored two away goals, given I just noticed the game was in Spain...

Man City didnt qualify for the fair play in 04/05. They did it in 02/03 and 07/08.

It is good to see Bolton won Aston Villa 2- 1
But we never budgeted nor planned to be in the CL unlike some other teams who yet again are not going to be in it.. Yes Liverpool im looking at you... So anything for us will actually be a bonus and not a penalty.
Whether or not Ashley spends a little more money to strengthen us remains to be seen, but as we are one of the more financially stable clubs who are spending what they earn now rather then spending what we dont any extra income from any competition will be a bonus to us.

He was happy to have won the match, it probably hadn't occurred to him, shock to the system, etc.
I don't think Shreeves handled the 'interview' very well at that point, but then it is Sky TV.

Good luck to Chelsea in the Final - wouldn't it be great if Torres got a hatrick to win it.
Alternatively if Jose makes it through and wins with Real Madrid - will he become the greatest Manager of all time (3x CL with different clubs 4x league titles different clubs)

Why is it unfair. England has 4 places. The Champions have always been given the right to defend their title. Nothing unfair about it. If Chelsea win it then top 3 go in
Oh and a message to all Villa fans. Don't panic. We are not going down. McLeish is an excellent manager who plays fantastic attacking football. I have every confidence in his ability to get the best out of the team in the last 3 games.
He once won a cup in Scotland you know so he must be good

15 to 20 years ago, one of England's "proud traditional clubs" (i.e. my team) fought relegation almost every year, but constantly came through. Now the same appears to be true of the Villa - and with only three points separating them and Bolton (who have a game in hand), things don't look too good. Take heart from the far superior GD (-14 against -28) - and hope. To be honest though, I think Blackburn and QPR have too many difficult games left to pass Villa. It's interesting though how Bolton, Blackburn and Villa all have to play Spurs (the other games are fairly similar too, presumably because the fixtures computer put the clubs too close together on account on being consecutive in the alphabet?)...
Elsewhere, I note that some have been suggesting that Di Matteo should be given the Chelsea job full-time. I certainly wouldn't object to that.

I'm still here. I stopped replying because I have said it all before, in previous posts.
Poor managers do not generally finish 2nd in the top flight in Scotland unless at the Old Firm. Poor managers don't take clubs from relegation to a 3rd-place finish in the top flight in 3 seasons. Poor managers don't win 7 trophies (note - that's significantly more than "a cup") and have the better of "Saint" Martin O'Neill while spending £-13 million net and slashing the wage bill. Poor managers do not go toe-to-toe with the likes of France and Italy while in charge of Scotland. Anyone would struggle at Villa right now while the chairman releases next to no money for transfers and sells your best players.
When McLeish is given a realistic transfer budget and wage bill to match your heady demands, and still fails to deliver, then come back and tell me he is out of his depth.

It would be better if he scored a hatrick in the F.A cup final, kissing the badge while doing so.
I think its now odds on that Jose will achieve this, they were tatically superb against Barca on saturday. I dont think 2-1 will be enough for Bayern.

Although I want Chelsea to win the Champions League I want Liverpool to win the FA Cup (and Hearts the Scottish Cup).
