If Rangers and Celtic join the EPL, then they will be relegated at the end of their first season, as they don't have that many premiership quality players between them.

Plus, it would mean a big change through out the rest of the English football league, to accomodate the 2 extra clubs. How will that happen? Will it be a case of 2 less promotion spots per division the following season? If so, that will upset the clubs who would have won promotion as they will lose out on extra TV money ....

the "other ten" had their chance, resigned "en masse" and then bottled it and came back with their tails between their legs.
just remember it's the old firm who keep your team afloat, or why else are you so desperate to ramp up ticket prices any time the old firm come to town.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

The prices are 'ramped up' to cover the cost of the ripped out seats, odour, and other petty vandalism that the soap dodgers inflict when they come mooching along. All the extra policemen aren't cheap either.

Don't kid yourself that the league needs the OF..its much the other way around. If they didn't have ten handicapped teams to consistently cheat points from (Aluko/McGeady ring any bells?) Where would they be?

The EPL have every right to deride old firm efforts, who else would want 1 team that wrought havoc in Manchester during 'that' game, plus another that cried conspiracy when their thuggish manager repeatedly got disciplined for severely harassing match officials and hopping around like a bad tempered gorilla.

they would start in league 2 and at the going rate rangers and pompey will soon be gone so no extra numbers

Ok, so what happens from the BSP down then? Do the 2 teams who should be promoted into League 2 stay where they are or do 2 extra teams in League 2 get relegated?

Your proposals make no sense what so ever.

I very much doubt that Celtic and Rangers (and their fans) would want to leave the SPL to join League 2 in England, even though they would probably get promoted to the Championship within 2 or 3 seasons. It would also upset a lot of the lower league clubs, as their chances of gaining promotion would be hindered for a while.

If Celtic and Rangers do join the English leagues, then they should start from step 7 (or is it step 8?), that's the regional leagues below the BSN/S and make their way up like every other team has to. For example, which league did the reformed Chester City and FC Halifax start from, and where did FC United start?

Just because they are big teams in Scotland, they should not have an automatic right to join the English league in which ever division they want to. That would make them even more hated than what they are now!

Then you get a conference team denied the opportunity for promotion to allow them in and they won't be very happy. You'll get this right down the pyramid until the place where new clubs would normally come in. For this league Glasgow is simply too far.
On the flip side I wonder what Celtic fans would have to say about the matter.

I reckon the SPL would be a better league without the old firm in the same way the EPL would be better without the usual suspects at the top.

I agree with your point of Sky having too much power over the authorities and in turn the FA is little more than a vassal of the Premier League

if that was the case then your team would have banned the OF from coming to your grounds long ago.

Don't kid yourself that the league needs the OF..its much the other way around. If they didn't have ten handicapped teams to consistently cheat points from (Aluko/McGeady ring any bells?) Where would they be?

like i said previously, you had your chance to force change but the lot of you bottled it!!!. why was that if you didn't need us, if the OF weren't here you'd be part time.

The EPL have every right to deride old firm efforts, who else would want 1 team that wrought havoc in Manchester during 'that' game, plus another that cried conspiracy when their thuggish manager repeatedly got disciplined for severely harassing match officials and hopping around like a bad tempered gorilla.

english fans have wrought havoc all over the world, have you forgotten they were banned from europe altogether in the 80's.

and as for crying conspiracy, did the match officials not conspire to lie about why celtic weren't awarded a penalty at tannadice, that's not conspiracy, that's fact.

you quoted my message and then made a point showing that you didn't bother to read it in the first place. i dont think it's any coincidence that with teams going bust in england and scotland that these ideas are being mooted.
i think celtic would take the place of a bust team and end up in league 2 and therefore not affecting promotion rlegation issues to or from the BSP.

don't bet on celtic not wanting to join from league 2, they would race through the leagues one after another, and don't kid yourself if you don't think they would.

celtic would take the place of a bust team and there's going to be a few of them soon so not affecting BSP teams, you'r right about the fa, like most fa's they're just about powerless and completely irrelevant.

Do you think these proposals just appear out of thin air. What on earth could anybody benefit if these were fantasy tales. We're going quickly down the road to a permanent team GB and it will be in the not too near future.and forget the Scottish Independence thing because that will never be allowed to happen.

Can I ask on what grounds and with what information you have and a query on the source of your information on the following:-

1)...A permanent UK football team.

2)...Clubs from the Scottish Premiership leaving their own league and joining the English league.

Your postings are so definate....perhaps you may care to share all this secret information that you are privy to, with other interested members on this forum. Have you attended any meetings with any of the four national Football Associations ? Can you publish details of any of these proposals that no one but you seem to be aware of, please.

Looks like events at Elland Road have buggered that result in TPL as well as screwing up the away goal sum. :(

Leeds 3 - 7 (Seven) Nottingham Forest!!

Oh dear I said it'd be 2-2 and there'd be 17 away goals

Let's see...

newbie babs: 3-1; 1 point
SS4: 2-2; 0 points
Greenback: 3-1; 1 point
Ivo: 2-0; 0 points
bb21: 2-1; 0 points
valenta: 3-1; 1 point
MattE2010: 3-0; 1 point

Actual: 3-7?! Where the Hell has that come from?

Not a good day to be a Leeds fan. I bet my brother will be happy though
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
Full time - and the result of 3-7 is confirmed. A shocking day at the office for Leeds; even the stats suggest Forest had it easy.

Elsewhere, the next highest scorers in the Championship were beleaguered Portsmouth, at home to Birmingham (which will cheer up SS4) - and Reading and West Ham have lost ground at the top after they lost and drew respectively whilst Southampton won away at Hull. Two-in-a-row for Southampton is looking very likely now - and Brighton's chances of joining them weren't exactly damaged today either.

don't bet on celtic not wanting to join from league 2, they would race through the leagues one after another, and don't kid yourself if you don't think they would.

Only if they could keep their players. For instance, Gary Hooper for 1 would be first out the door, as his chances of getting into the England squad would be zero if he plays outside either the EPL or SPL.

Anyway, I asked about promotion/relegation from the BSP down is because you simply can not just add 2 teams to a league. For Rangers and Celtic to join the football league in League 2 means that 2 teams from the BSP do not get promoted. They then lose out on extra TV money.

To balance out the 2 extra teams in the BSP, you then either have to have an extra 2 teams relegated from the BSP into the BSN/S or 1 less team promoted from both the BSN and BSS. You then have to balance out those leagues and the regional leagues that feed them. Not worth the hassle, just so 2 clubs can move countries and get a bigger pay day.

Anyway, talking about the clubs in financial trouble.... Port Vale are expected to come out of administration next month. Portsmouth, while they will be in adminstration for a while, the man in charge there is getting things sorted slowly but surely, but Rangers? Everyone is running to their solicitors over the club trying to get as much money for themselves as they can. Technically, they aren't in administration yet, as the company buggered up the court filing! Out of those 3, the existance of Rangers is the one most in doubt, so why should they join the English league?

you quoted my message and then made a point showing that you didn't bother to read it in the first place

Yes I did read it, because you didn't answer the question I asked (which I've repeated above). Can you answer it please?

Hmm... He isn't good enough for Southend but he is good enough for the PL. That woul explain why Southend are currently 72nd in England, having lost at home to the mighty Aldershot tonight

Aye, but good enough for Scunthorpe (£50000 I believe was the fee), who then sold him 2 years later to Celtic for £2.4m :D

Suncthorpe are efficient with their players and would recognise a good player instantly, especially up front. Never mind Hooper for a minute; look at Billy Sharp. Thinking back to Southend, when Freddy Eastwood scored against Man Utd (6/11/06) everyone said he was the next big thing, but really Billy Sharp was far better. Heck, even Beefy Botham played up front for Scunthorpe, and he went on to become one of England's best ever sportsmen (even if he did make his name outside of football). On the other hand, Eastwood aside Southend haven't been able to recognise outside talent - even when put in front of their noses - since the days of Stan Collymore and Chris Powell. And they played for Southend when I was at playschool.

Thus, Hooper failed at Southend, but succeeded at Scunthorpe - and netted them a tidy profit in the process.

Messi, who at 24 has become Barca's highest ever scorer this evening, has scored an equal number of goals in his last seven games than Saurez, Carroll and Torres have in 103 games between them...

1)...A permanent UK football team.

FIFA members hate the fact that the U.K. has four seperate entries to FIFA tournaments and four seperate votes on FIFA matters, now once team GB competes at the olympics a precedent will have been set of the home nations competing under one banner.

now fifa or uefa can make any promises they like about it not affecting the separate identities of the home nations but it's not worth the paper it's written on, fifa has a 2/3rds majority voting system and i don't think we'd get too many votes in our favour, so get ready for team GB forever.

btw, when gibraltar wanted full uefa and fifa membership the spanish complained about it and when it went to a vote they were defeated by 45 votes to 3.
guess who the 3 votes were from, england, scotland and wales, now i wonder why those 3 voted for it

2)...Clubs from the Scottish Premiership leaving their own league and joining the English league.

i think it's pretty common knowledge that celtic would upsticks and move to england tomorrow if allowed

If Celtic could get into the Premiership the SKY money combined with their huge gates would make them a formidable prospect. The balance of power has shifted away since the money poured into the game down south.

With regard to voting rights , as founding members the home nations each retain a vote and quite rightly so.

I don't see why we can't have a GB team just for the Olympics - we have The British Lions in Rugby :p

We are having a GB football team for the Olympics.

Which, I am sure that you will agree, is something rather different than having a permanent GB national team.

The team that will be chosen to represent Britain at the Olympic Games, from what preliminary information suggests, will not be the strongest possible team comprising of the best players from all four national bodies. The Olympic Games are not too far removed in time. Who is the manager and the coaching staff of the Olympic team ? Have any training sessions been held to enable the squad players to coalesce and to play with confidence in each others ability ? Or will it be a case of "everything done at the last minute" ?

If you want a comparison to what a "special occasion" combined team that represents Britain, WITHOUT the perceived need for the national bodies of the four home nations, plus that of Eire, having to forseek their own individual identities, you have to look no further than the sport of Rugby Union with the British Lions overseas tours that are made. This is a long-standing tradition that is run successfully.

As far as I can see, the invitation extended to Great Britain (only because we are the host nation, may I add) to enter a football team, is a one-off matter. Look at past Olympic Games and see how many times a combined British football team has participated in these Games.

There is something deliciously ironic about Celtic fans wanting to join the league of a country they despise.

Get over it. It will never happen

You'll also see that when olympic football was changed from amateur status to professional, was the last time any GB entered the competition for fear of losing the independent status of the home nations in the eyes of fifa.

I've been saying the for ages that Celtic and Rangers should be allowed to play in England well maybe not Rangers because of their financial folly, but could be allowed in when the club comes out of administration. Just as long as they start in the bottom tier in the conference league. If they went straight into the football league it would make a mockery of the playoffs.

Also at least Celtic fans know how to behave unlike Rangers fans who smashed up Manchester city centre a few seasons ago, and took less fans with them than Celtic fans did to Seville who's model behaviour was praised by UEFA.

I would also like to see a 2 tier Premier League for yo yo teams like Wolves, West Brom, who are too good for championship but not good enough to play in the Premier league, they promoted into the premier league then get relegated the next year.

Both are as bad as each other! Maybe the Bhoys never trashed Manchester but they are far from whiter than white.

I would like to see a 2 tier Premier League too but instead of yo-yo teams for those at the top who for all intents and purposes deny the other 15 teams from winning something.
Not entirely sure how it would be split and I'd like 12-15 teams in each tier rather than 10 as it would be. Naturally the tv money would go to this upper tier but I reckon it'd create a fairer system.
Amongst the teams that would secede would be:
  • Man City
  • Man Utd
  • Chelsea
  • Arsenal
  • Spurs
  • Liverpool

I'd be the first to admit that it wouldn't be fair for those teams that join them and also that it's probably poorly thought out. I'd thought about a kind of European Super League - like the champions league but a full time league with teams promoted/relegated to their domestic leagues although that idea would produce domestic leagues with varying numbers of clubs.

To cut a long story short there is something wrong with the league when 4th, even 6th, is now the equivalent of 1st for most PL teams

What they could do is the same as Rugby League. Where teams get promoted into the Premier League either automatically or via the playoffs they are exempt from getting relegated in the 1st season.

I believe Mark Lawrenson said of City's equaliser - 'That is never a penalty in a million years'.

What a comeback from QPR, 0-2 down after 77 minutes to 3-2 winners, including a goal from ex-Liverpool man Djibril Cisse.

i think mancini has lost all credibility after this, how could he possibly have allowed tevez to pull on that shirt again and leave himself looking as if he has 1 ounce of self respect.
i think he's finished after this.
