I remain convinced that the attack on the coach bringing the Manchester United team to Upton Park must have had some effect upon their players' mindset.

They need to start docking points for these sorts of incidents. Although the vast majority of football fans are well behaved, I do not believe some clubs do enough to deal with the significant problems posed by a minority.
(And before I get attacked - again - and anyone claims I know nothing about football and yada yada, I'm actually related to a former West Ham captain, have been to more than half of 'the 92' grounds and I doubt many people on this forum get paid to do anything to do with football. So there)
the problem is how can you extend control from the "closed" environment of the ground to the "open" environment of the street?
What powers of arrest, investigation or detention do West Ham United have? What proof is there these people are even West Ham "fans"? Surely it is for the police to prosecute these people and then place them under a banning order

Ashington provided 2 players and the last time I checked you need 11 players in a football team. That's not to suggest the West Ham trio weren't crucail players but they were part of a team. It wasnt any of the super trio who scored against Mexico or France or Portugal, although Hurst got the only goal v Argentina.
The point is it is a team game.
So are lots of people.
No more so than many other grounds. I ma sure htere was a simlar atmosphere at the last game at Ayresome Park or the Baseball Ground or Maine Road or Highbury. There was a pretty good atmosphere at the last game at Feethams!
The real West Ham that seems to be overlooked or glorified in turn by the media?
He seems to be suggesting now that it was Manchester United's fault for not arriving earlier:roll:

Hopefully the FA will throw the book at West Ham, and make them play their first home game next season behind closed doors.

I dislike cockney west ham but why should the club be punished for actions beyond their control which occurred off their land and outside a pub?
Had their "fans" been fighting on the pitch inside the ground then i would agree.

How do we know it was West Ham fans what done it? All we've seen is the team bus with a load of smashed windows and the video of the Manchester United players blubbing.

West Ham then won a bid process by which they would have owned the stadium outright. That deal collapsed and they bid again through a different process, and were again successful.
Of course, the Conservative Mayor could have awarded the stadium to a football club that is owned by a Bahamian resident tax exile, and has the former Conservative Party deputy chairman as a shareholder.

, particularly when their chairman comes out with "we are the envy of the football league" and they flew a banner over Deepdale claiming their so called superiority over us, well what goes round comes round, next stop for Blackpool the Conference and a potential derby with AFC Fylde

Because of the very location of the attack on the coach, the matter should be viewed in the same way by the police as a public order offence, as there is visual proof of glass items being thrown at a coach whilst it was on a public highway. The police were well aware that because that football match was due to be played at Upton Park, very large congregations of people were expected to be in the vicinity of the area concerned and must have had contingency plans that would need a high level of police presence.

The rent is protected for a while but after that I can't help but feel it's going to get very expensive. Indeed, I think the club will have a hefty bill - although staying up does mean an insane amount of money from the TV rights.
As I'm ditching Sky from the end of May, it will have to recover the money from someone else!

And yet according to eyewitnesses that I've spoken to, there were almost no police there until 4pm, by which time BBC London was already reporting traffic disruption and large crowds in the area.

In all honesty the atmosphere was always pretty loud at Upton Park, the only reason I thought it warranted a mention last night was because I don't think it will be replicated in the Olympic Stadium. As for Highbury I can't ever recall going there and thinking that the atmosphere was even remotely intimidating or even loud.

In all fairness I think you're somewhat wide of the mark there. I saw my fellow Derby County supporters behave disgracefully at the train station in Derby following our recent win over Forest, throwing missiles across the tracks and indeed in the case of Rotherham away game running across the tracks to get at opposition supporters so I certainly don't think that violent behavior is limited to West Ham. Indeed I don't think the "real West Ham" is any worse than any other club. I visited Upton Park on many occasions as a Derby fan and never felt threatened. From what I can gather the trouble last night was caused by people who didn't have tickets which suggests to me that they were already banned from attending games because of previous trouble.

A lot of people came along without tickets just for the occasion and a lot of them had probably been in the pub drinking for a few hours hence the trouble and I think the police need to be asking themselves why they weren't there in greater numbers earlier in the day.
