Are we to therefore assume that the Hand of God was not a clear handball? Whilst it is true that the officials on the day missed it, everyone (including Maradona himself) knows that it was a clear handball.

Indeed so. But how many times do you see a referee "mobbed" by players when the decision given is not one with which they agree....

Perhaps I should provide the Manager's perspective...

Luis Suarez should not confess handball - Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers said it was not up to Luis Suarez to admit to handling the ball when he scored Liverpool's second in the 2-1 FA Cup win over Mansfield.

Stags players protested to the officials after the ball struck the substitute's hand and went in.

When asked whether Suarez should have owned up, the Liverpool manager told ESPN: "It's not Luis's job to do that.

"It's not been deliberate as it's pushed up and hit his hand. It's up to the officials to decide that."

The former Swansea boss added: "There's no doubt it was handball, but the referee and the officials ruled it wasn't deliberate.

"I spoke to the fourth official when it was given because I couldn't see and he said it was [handball] so I can only assume they thought it wasn't deliberate.

"So obviously it was unfortunate for Mansfield and lucky for us that we got the goal."

I have never had an especially high opinion of Brendan Rodgers, but what opinion I did have has collapsed dramatically in his time at Liverpool. You don't need to be biased to realise that Liverpool and their manager complain far too much and sometimes seem to even take the rules upon themselves, which I have long been led to believe was Ferguson's job...!

Compare these actions and responses to that from Newcastle 'keeper Steve Harper when his side travelled to Goodison Park earlier this year.

The 'rules' of the game are actually the Laws of Association Football.

There is no direct mention of diving in the laws. It is called simulation, and the referee should only award a free kick for this offence if there is no contact. Any doubt and the player falling should be given the benefit of the doubt. If there is no contact and a free kick is awarded, the player going to ground should also be cautioned.

Handball should only be awarded when the contact is deliberate. Ball to hand is therefore not an offence, but hand to ball is. Also the ball blasted at a player from close range is unlikely to be considered by the referee as a deliberate action.

Having read that article, I don't see where Brendan Rodgers is complaining there, or interpreting rules in their favour. All I can see is that he is explaining what happened for those who don't know the rules of the game as well as some of us do.

Anyway, talking of Liverpool, I think they have made a mistake in signing Sturridge. Chelseas have certainly got the better of their transfer dealings so far, after getting rid of a not very good striker (IMO) for £12m and replacing him with Demba Ba for a reported £7.5m.

According to the guidelines for referees:

"Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into consideration:
• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an
infringement

Therefore, if the "offending" player says he did not mean to, there is no evidence of the "deliberate" nature of the action, i.e. intention. For my six-pennorth, remove the word "deliberate", and specify that the referee should decide whether, by the touch, the offending player gained an illegitimate advantage for his side.

The 'rules' of the game are actually the Laws of Association Football.

Pretty much. Everyone has been wanking over the Spanish national team and thus La Liga without realising more than one style of play exists.

When I watch the games on Sky Sports the atmosphere always sounds rubbish compared to English games.

Plus, if it's not Barca or Real then it's hard to keep interest.

Recent postings seem to reveal an interest in Trafford FC from the Evo-Stik League (First Division North) and this coming Saturday sees them at home to table-topping Mossley FC.

I wouldn't say anything about our performance at the moment even if we have just pulled a goal back.
I see no reason why Bradford wouldn't be admitted into the Europa League if they won the cup but I'm not sure about runners up, their ground certainly seems good enough
