I think I brought this up a while back about the Specials, after some aggro on a train to Boro before the wear-tees derby, would there ever be a case for Footy Specials again, I once read that BTP would prefer fans off the system altogether, so would specials ever be worth it, and it would keep fans and public apart on the system

Football specials are not a bad idea but you cannot/should not force fans to use them instead of scheduled services. You could entice them to use the specials by giving a lower price but then someone would have to pay for it and the trains would have to be dry.

Unfortunately for BTP you cannot demand certain people to not travel without committing an offence

And rightly so, nobody should be forced into travel arrangements they dont want, give fans a competitive price to attract them onto a football special, surely clubs and supporter groups could come up with something between them, with clubs providing there stewards to keep an eye on things, with a minimal BTP presence, I believe Middlesbrough Stewards have in the past escorted fans on trains down the ECML

Its a shame we dont have many Mk2's left, refurbish them to a reasonable standard, then have DRS hire them out to clubs as football specials with some 37's or something. Probably bring a little cash in, releive overcrowding on the regular services, and they wouldnt need ORCATS as they would be chartered

....and we all know who that is, from your recent dedicated campaign on the Football thread on the General Discussion forum....:D:D

Nah, they can get the tube . I was thinking of a team closer to home who's owner can always make them more money ;)

There would be as many bashers as football fans on this !!

Unfortunately, many stadiums are far away from suitable stations.

It's the old problem that trains can only go where there are tracks and stations, whereas a fleet of supporters buses will pick people from various pick up points in the area and in most cases take them straight to the stadium. When I go to the football I get picked up, ironically, at a railway station bus stop, taken to the stadium about 60 miles or so away and returned, all for £11. I doubt a train would be so cheap.

ReverendFozz and Yew must have read my mind.

This is just the sort of thing that should have been thought of and put into motion ten years ago when the Mk2s were removed from West coast/Anglia Main Line operations.

With today's long distance railway being almost as busy on Saturdays as it is in the week, I doubt there is much stock available to fulfil such an operation, so the idea could now only be fulfilled when further stock gets released from the system (which would be following the introduction of HST replacement I suppose)

A fleet of say fifteen train sets could then provide away travel for:
*Premiership and Championship games where the distance travelled is in excess of say fifty miles.
*All FA Cup ties once the competition is into the last sixteen.

If these fixtures do not provide work for every set then the spares could be used for matches in Leagues 1 & 2, and also for Local Derbies where the train is recognised as a heavily used mode of travel (ie Norwich-Ipswich etc)

One rake could also see use for GB home nation matches in the Six Nations tournament, essentially linking London (KX or Padd), Edinburgh and Cardiff with Twickenham, Edinburgh or Cardiff as appropriate.

Use of the services should be restricted to matchday ticket holders, and prebooked through the organising company. Rakes could be extended/ shortened as required to suit booked loadings and platform capacity at origin and destination stations. In many cases the services would eliminate intermediate stops and the need to change trains en route.

Such a plan would provide work for traincrew and stock on in excess of forty weekends per year, plus the midweek dates, in which cases the services would be most useful as it is often the case, even for short runs, that the last train home leaves about five minutes before the end of the game. It also brings in some track access revenue for use of paths that would otherwise remain untaken.

I can not really see how this would fail. Just needs a forward thinking company and some stock.

Do London Midland still run Football Specials from New Street to Witton and Snow Hill to Bordesley?

I was Guard on a service which stopped at Bordesley for a Birmingham City cup tie once, however they lost 7-0 and I only got 2 on..

Also worked a 2225 Leicester-Nottm Special recently. Unfortunately Leicester City were at home the following night.

They do run extras to Witton for Villa games yes. Not sure about the other lot

2 DRS football specials in for this Sunday, one Liverpool Lime St-Wembley, the other Allerton-Wembley.

Virgin are also running additional (charter I think) services Liverpool-Euston including one using the WB64 Mk3 rake.

Will drop times out in a bit but I'm sure you will be able to get them from Open Train Times as well.

On a train somewhere in Europe
Haven't seen any recently but Chelsea fans have made use of a rake of DBS MkIIs usually hauled by a class 67 to various places in the past; Blackburn, Liverpool and Stoke are some of the places that come to mind. Stand to be corrected, but I think the trains were chartered by the supporters club.

Not sure if this counts as a full-blown Footex but I went to the Reebok a few weeks ago and there was an 8-coach (4 x 150s?) special train back from Horwich Parkway, calling at Bolton and Manchester Victoria only after the match.

I think its a case of extra stops on existing services when there is a home game. Other than that Bordesley has the good old 1tpw.

Greater Anglia (and their previous incarnations) have ALWAYS provided football specials. One such train is the 1715 Ipswich to Liverpool Street (all mainline stations) which acts as a relief to the 17.09 on days where Ipswich Town play at home.

Also, when Norwich City and Ipswich Town meet there is an additonal loco hauled train for the relevant away fans which is accompanied by BTP and club officials / stewards.

LM's timetables used to (unsure if still do) indicate additional calls by certain trains at Witton or Bordesley "when Aston Villa/Birmingham City FC play at home"
These are normally between 1300 and 1400 and then between 1700 and 1800. These calls do not appear in the National Rail Timetable (Tables 70/71)
Whether they ever do extra stops for weekday evening games I would not know.

They do in the cross city timetable for Villa Park so I imagine they'd do the same in the Snow Hill lines for St Andrews.
I've seen specials at New St to Witton calling at Witton only but I'd imagine these are more extra services than specials, the difference being your normal passenger can still use it.

I think they would be a good idea (and not just as interesting spotting potential). Most of the 'problems' caused by football fans come from mixing two teams' fans together or from passengers being intimidated by drunk fans (get quite a lot on Airedale line trains after Leeds matches - nothing wrong with them, a very friendly lot, but anyone not used to it might be a little uncomfortable. By using dedicated trains they could avoid both of these issues.

Mentioned in another thread, but often if a stadium's nearest station lies away from the city's main station, why can't there be direct trains to the stadium's station from wherever the away team are coming from? (This will take pressure away from the main stations, especially at weekends when there will be families, etc. on a day out around the main stations and I think a lot of people may feel uncomfortable with their kids around football fans).

E..g Man Utd v Liverpool; could Northern lay on direct trains from Liverpool Lime Street to/from Man Utd FC Halt to releive pressure on Manchester Piccadilly station (as well as avoiding Liverpool/Man UTd fans mixing in the station and on trains which could lead to trouble, particularly with rivals such as Utd and Liverpool).

Firstly, that would only work if you abolished the usual services that are used by Manchester United supporters using Class 323 EMUs! I am sure that the thousands of users of those services would be most displeased at your proposal. Have you considered that?

Secondly, it would not avoid rival 'fans' mixing. Any troublemakers would obviously not take the direct train and would go via the city centre.

Northern have done this in the past on Tyne and Wear Derby Games with trains stopping short at St Peters Metro...

It would not be quite so simple to run a mainline footex to St James' though

Out of interest, how many Mark 2 coaches are left? What happened to all of the ex Anglia coaches?
