all i know is its running a shuttle up the branch at back at 2pm

The back is pretty much the same as the front, so it doesnt matter.

Lucky it wasnt a loco hauled train, then you would be gutted if you only got the back.

thanks for all ya help was an awesome day the driver really gave it some jice up the hill
and a few nice tones as well
never saw u there but maybe you saw me i was hanging out the windo on the buffet on the way up and first door after buffet lanward side on the down

Hi Everyone!
Was browsing for stuff about the Thumper on the Folkestone Harbour Branch and came across your thread. I'm involved with the Remembrance Line Association, which was formed to try and save the line from being redeveloped out of existence. We were happy to be able to bring the Thumper to Folkestone courtesy of Hastings Diesels and would be happy to receive any comments on our website www.theremembranceline.org.uk The tour was a great success and I feel that another tour would be as popular if it can be arranged - maybe in the Spring.

The Remembrance Line membership rallied round on the day before the tour and gave the Harbour Station a well-deserved clean up in an effort to present the station in the best light and we were rewarded with a spot on the Meridian News at 6pm.

Anyone interested in joining and helping our efforts to save the line from obliteration would be most welcome. Also, keep an eye on the website for future events.

I am also keen to save that line. I have campaigned in the local news paper about it. It was a great turnout for the Thumper, even though it was only a diesel! Glad to see old Andy Mullen down there with his displays and old railway uniform

Yeah same here I also want the Folkestone Harbour Branch saved. It will be good to have Tangmere down there again as I be on it :razz: lets hope the weather will be nice other wise Tangmere will have a fun job getting out of the harbour. but if the harbour branch is saved then I would like what happened when the Channel Tunnel opened and have two Standard class 4MT 2-6-4 tank engines down there again http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=uLVd4u7gXNU

I shall have to sort out some photos for your site, is it just for the Thumper, or can it be from previous workings?

Pannier tanks would be brilliant so would a Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST or both Ian rileys locos +T :razz: I have a good shot off 67006 entering the Harbour if you want a copy?

Well, back in the day, there were several ex GWR Panniers that were converted for use on the line. As far as I can remember, they had cut down chimneys or cabs.. I have forgotten, but they were definately modified. It would take 3 or 4 to push a full train up the bank, to the East sidings and the top.

I also believe P Classes were also used. There was a variety of lovely little locos in use, as there was a weight restriction on the pier.

I shall sort some photos out as soon as possible, have you got an email address to send them to?

Cabs look ok to me, the chimneys do look slightly taller than usual.

Josh, yes I know Andy, and his son, who also was appropriately dressed up. You're right about the panniers working the line but the cut-down locos that you're thinking of were the old R1's that worked the line for about 50 years up until 1959 when they were replaced for a short while by the panniers.
Not all the R1's were cut down but those that were had it done so that they could work the Canterbury and Whitstable line where the clearances were very tight. After that was closed they were used on the harbour branch at Folkestone in original and cut-down forms. They were shedded at the top of the branch where many of the pictures that you see of them were taken.

Any photos that you and James have of the harbour branch would be of interest so thanks in advance!

Those type off Panniers had long chimneys and yeah panniers replaced SER R1 class 0-6-0's on banking dutys.
