The ticket I had is what used to be referred to as an "Open Return", valid to come back within a month. Cheapest walk - up fare there is, unless there are any splits to be had for that journey.

The ticket formerly known as an "open return" is now called an "Anytime Return", and is rarely the cheapest walk-up fare (that'll be an Off-Peak Return or Super Off-Peak Return).

Sorry, meant to say Saver Return, if that's what's referred to as a Super - Off Peak Return now

Nope, that would have been a Supersaver Return.

To complicate things further, certain ticketing sites are using the term "Open Return" to refer to a ticket that can be used on one of several trains, as distinct from an Advance.

Let's all avoid the term "open return". The original ticket type of that name is now called Anytime return (but retains the codes FOR/SOR), some people mean a ticket that is valid on any off peak train within a month, some people mean a ticket that is not tied to a specific train but may only be valid for one day. If we avoid using the term then we won't get confused! Simple? ;)

Anyway, whatever you are calling it, you could have bought it on the Southern website the night before, and been refunded if you had decided not to travel. That would be a better strategy in future rather than not buying the ticket before joining the train due to lack of time at the station.
