Flying to Australia

My aunty lives in Landsborough, Queensland, and we are looking to visit her and the rest of her family there.

We will fly to Melbourne, then on to Maroochydore.

My question is this. The plane stops in Dubai but we don't change planes. Do we stay on the plane whilst it's on the tarmac, how long will it stay there for, and can we leave the plane if we wish?

You will get off the plane in Dubai and then get back on again. Where are you flying from. When I flew with Qantas from Heathrow last year I only had about an hour in Dubai each way. It was the same plane but you get off walk through security and then wait at the gate.

In the last four years, I've had 4 airlines when heading down under.

Air NZ (Same plane, off & on at LAX)
Eithad (Switch planes at Abu Dhabi)
China Eastern (Switch planes at Shanghai)
Korean (Switch planes at Seoul Incheon)

Pleasantly surprised with all four of them. My advice is to just switch off and sleep as much as possible. I broke my journey each time on the way home, most recently a 14-night stopover at Seoul

When I went to New Zealand (Thai Airlines- couldn't face another Thai meal for a year after the amount of food I had on the flights) I managed zero jetlag (ten years of shift work must've helped there), I ignored when the cabin lights went off for sleeping and stayed awake longer to adjust my body clock towards the 12 hour difference.

And the obligatory, are you actually flying on Qantas metal (QF10), or a Qantas codeshare? I've also heard of people being booked QF2 to Dubai, then changing to QF10 to continue to Melbourne.

IIRC Dubai is a everybody off and cabin cleared place, so make sure you take all your belongings when you disembark there.

A word of warning: if your stopover is inside the airport do not buy any liquids such as aftershave, perfume or alcohol in the UK. Australian rules say you can only buy them at the transit airport where they will be delivered to you on the plane. I recently flew via Abu Dhabi. Remember I never left the transit area of went through passport control. I cleared 'transit' security and browsed the shops/grabbed food. Just before going through to my gate I bought a bottle of water from the kiosk next to the line. I was given a choice: drink it now or have it confiscated. Of course it took an hour to board everyone, then we were delayed on the Tarmac, so by the time I finally got a drink I was gasping.

If recent experience in the ME is anything to go by, you won't have a choice... It's hard to stop people smoking on the plane, let alone in the airport

My understanding is that Qantas are on a bit of a downward slump. I would say, if you're changing over in Dubai, that Emirates are a better option. I hear Ethihad are good as well but I've never flown with them.

Emirates are running the risk of getting banned from Australia over an accident at Melbourne (the arse of the plane dragged along the runway, overran at the upwind end and took out ILS and lighting equipment) caused by fatigue and consequent pilot error. If they drag the arse of the plane along one of our runways one more time they'll be gone.

Some of the locals at the country town of Yankalilla helpfully put out a couple of large (and reasonably official-looking) signs alongside the Tour Down Under route last Friday warning the riders of drop bear attacks.

Given that Emirates and Qantas have a partnership I doubt that Emirates will be out of Australia any time soon. The OP certainly wouldn't have Qantas tickets through Dubai. I also doubt there will be another Emirates tale strike in Australia in the near future, these things are quite rare, and this was back in 2009 before the partnership anyway wasn't it?

I know mate, that is all tied in with their agreement with Emirates as far as I am aware though. I doubt Qantas will be flying via Dubai any more if Emirates get kicked out of Australia.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Emirates fanboy. It would mess things up for them as they currently fly on from Australia to New Zealand as well. Plus would you really want to fly with an airline that has incidents quite so often (By airline standards).

The incident in Brisbane was not a tail strike but rather that foreign object debris was blown over the runway during the take off of an A380 bound for Auckland. The Brisbane runway had recently been repaved and the jet blast tore up a 15 sq metre section of the asphalt.

I can tell you for sure that they are as grim as they seem. Every time I have been in one they are rough as hell and make you stink to high heaven which is why I have a quick 2 in sucession then leave. They are not very well ventilated.

I came back via Bankok the other week and it was bloody awful in there. Had to change me shirt and everything.

Fair play then chief. That would make it pretty much zero chance of Emirates being booted out of Oz. Which wouldn't have happened anyway. Brisbane Airports baggage handlers are already in the ex girlfriends bad books for killing her hair dryer!
