Flying Scotsman to go black

I think it will be great to see the loco in a different colour scheme, but I'm sure one or two people will be upset by this move!

I'm sure some will, but in all honestly they could do calming down a bit, its gonna be in that livery for less than 6 months. Good move in my opinion.

Thats my opinion, however judgeing from a comment made by Pete Waterman in his trains programme a few years ago, where he said that when he owned scotsman (as we know he painted her in BR green), he had never recived so much hate mail in his life, there will be a few people that won't be too impressed. But for me not overly fussed about that black just as long as they gt rid of those horrible 'german style' smoke deflectors i'll be happy.

They will go during black but then reappear when in LNER green in summer

Im all for it. People should realise that it hasnt been 4472 in Apple Green its whole life. Pete Waterman was right to give it the dark shade of green with No: 60103.

Sadly the smoke deflectors will be fitted its says on the NRM website. My feeling is if its carries them, then it should be in BR Green.

My earliest memory of steam is of scotsman at the NVR when she was owned by Pete Waterman. I was about 5 or 6 and i distinctly remember losing my hat whilst riding behind her. At that age you don't really take much notice of liveries, I just remember the sense of power she radiated (and it wasn't just the heat from the boiler). She is the most famous steam engine in the world, and the first steam engine I ever saw in the metal. I would still hold an affection for her even if someone painted her bright orange, though i cant say i would extend the affection to the one that painted her in said orange.

Same, I really don't like those, makes it look less like an LNER loco and more like a rebuilt Southern railway pacific (Merchant Navy Class).

I don't much like the dark BR green, but wartime black would be interesting so long as the LNER apple green comes back eventually (in a year or 2).

Well, if it's only temporary, black with the German deflectors: if BR had kept steam a few more years into the 70's, then that appearance might have become the norm. Perhaps not a double arrow on the tender.

Why is it that it always come down to people saying "it must be in LNER Apple Green" the loco carried other colours during its life and why shouldn`t it be shown to the world in its other liveries, I not surprised that Pete Waterman got rid.

I guess that if BR had kept steam into the 70's some steam locos would have gone into BR blue, complete with BR arrows - as happened with the Vale of Rheidol narrow gauge locos when that line belonged to BR. Whether yellow smokebox doors would have been practical I'm not so sure!

LNER if without the smoke deflectors, then yes, that is what it should be in

I suppose LNER green is the image embedded in the eyes of the general (non enthusiast) public. I think its more pleasing to the eye myself, though this wartime black would make an interesting variant as it hasn't been done before in preservation. Vibrant colours probably play a part in drawing the public's attention too I reckon. The 4-4-0 "Morayshire" looks quite smart in LNER green also, likewise I think the Caledonian 0-6-0 looks more fetching in blue than black, but that's just my opinion.

Looking at the UK preservation scene I've often found the scores of BR liveried locos and carriages to be a bit drab and lacking in variety at times, though I understand these are the liveries most enthusiasts can remember steam engines in (those who were around when steam was in use that is). The same when you walk into a model railway exhibition and every second layout is BR black or green locos hauling nothing but maroon mk1s. My guess would be this applies even more so to the general public.

I know its an apocryphal paint job on 40145 but I do think it looks good in BR large logo and for me when it come to livery's I prefer mixing things up and seeing something a bit different (even if it isn't true to what the loco wore in service).

Still I think 40145 is getting a new paint job at some point this year isn't it?

I thought it looked OK at first, but the joke's really been wearing very thin indeed for a couple of years now.

Is the paint job still on or is the money having to go into mending it? Last time I saw it it was very dead indeed behind 67023.

it will be a change to see 4472 in wartime black if it looks as good as 6233 duchess of sutherland in black it will look very smart
