The National Railway Museum have launched an appeal to raise further funds for working on 4472, 'Flying Scotsman'. It is intended to have Flying Scotsman running on the main line during 2010, however the museum needs an extra £250,000 to accomplish this because of rising costs associated with the project. The rise in costs has been associated with the poor conditioner of the boiler and the rising cost of copper.

You can help by sponsoring various parts of the loco (from a firebox at £100,000 to a bolt at £25) or by sending a plain donation.

Anybody interested can find more information and donate to the cause via the following link http://www.nrm.org.uk/flyingscotsman/index.asp

I hope they will raise the funds for 4472, I'm sure they will. I would hate to see her turn out like the Mallard - a simply devine locomotive on static display in some museum unlikely to ever steam again.

No thanks.
£4472,0000 is the biggest waste of space in preservation. FACT. :p

OMG no <( 4472 is the legend of preservation it can be pain when there are problems with her but when she returns I be happy and all you need is flying scotsman and Tornado double header 8-) I did hear that if NRM did not buy her should be sold to the states :(

The_Rail_WAy: I dont think the NRM will do that to scotsman like they have to Mallard, 34051 BofB Winston Churchill & Green Arrow.

I read about this today, i think i read somewhere (cant remember where) that the boiler she had when last running was an A4 boiler and that the one that they are appealing for is a A3 boiler. I'll be sending a donation, one of my favourite locos and ive yet to see her in steam.

Fix the thing up and put it on display, it's had it's fair share of mainline running. Can't stand how it is the centre of attention and care at the NRM, when other pieces of rolling stock sit and rust. How about getting Lode Star up and running, I'd much rather see that in preservation or on the mainline. And before most of you start saying that it is a national treasure, I know it is, which is why it should be parked up in the Great Hall where everyone can see it, not pottering from York to Scarborough and back for a couple of years before going for another overhaul, costing billions of pounds.

Saw it in pieces in the workshop at the NRM today. Very sorry it looked too.
Seemed Ironic as Tornado was parked up in front of it too....
Good things come to those who wait and I think that eventually the money will get raised ;)

I think at the moment more people are interested in Tornado and considering how much money has been put into her alot of enthusiasts may not cough up as quickly as with Tornado.
I say build her back up stick her in the great hall till everyone wants her back and then bring her mainline again.
Personally I think she has had her time in the spotlight and should stay on a preserved line from now on but then again Mallard doesnt get that form of glory so...............
