Can you help?

I've booked a flight MAN - AMS leaving on a Sat and returning on a Mon for 2 pax. Both Fly Be.

Their website says

Online check-in opens 36 hours before the first flight in your booking
You will need your Booking Reference and passport details (for international flights)

Does this mean that you can print off the return ticket at the same time, or you can only print off the return part 36 hrs before that flight?

Has anyone had experience of flying FlyBe?

Average to mediocre operationally (not called FlyMaybe by some for a laugh), though excellent (the jets) or interesting (the props) aircraft, and generally nice staff.

I have only flown domestic with Flybe but I could only checkin for the outward flight but not the return as it was too soon.

FWIW they don't charge for airport check-in (I think) so you could just do that on the way back.

You can only check-in for the part in that 36-hour range. However, as Neil says, you can check-in at the airport no problem.

Punctuality has improved in my experience, haven't had a delayed sector with them for a while now.

Staff polite and very well turned out. Occasionally robotic.

No quibble with Neil's comments on the planes! MAN-AMS is a mixture of jets and props. Jets are the winner, and props on a windy day into AMS save you a fortune on theme park entry tickets.

Flybe use D gates at AMS which are a long walk from everywhere - allow plenty of time!

Yes, that's true, but returning from Schipol might provide a time issue if the queues are long. I've downloaded the mobile app so may be able to download our tickets from the hotel without printing and wave them at a scanner.

If you have booked two people with one booking, how does a mobile app cope with that? Will one scan show two pax? Never done it before, could do with a practice!

BTW Turbo-prop. Looking forward to giving it a good push to get it started.

You want to try LCY in a Fokker 50, if any still operate there. I used to describe it as "the authentic plane crash experience without actually crashing".

Not sure for certain if it can handle two people like that - has whoever you're travelling with also got a smartphone?

Very willing to take your word for it. ABZ is another good opportunity to land sideways clutching your last will and testament on a breezy day in a prop.


Howardh: the props are absolutely fine. You will have a DH8 on that route, which are good planes. An ATR72 would be a different story, though. No chance of that happening though, no fear. The DH8 are just a bit slower, bit noisier and a bit cramped and jumpier in rough weather.

All Flybe planes are 2+2, which is an absolute bonus

The D gates are well positioned at Amsterdam (although the far end of the pier is still a bit of a walk). From the nearer D gates, I've made train connections in <5 minutes from leaving the plane including passport control.

Are you thinking of the M gates, which are used by the worst of the worst budget airlines and are indeed a long walk?

Sadly I don't think there are any F50s left at LCY since CityJet retired theirs. A F50 at least felt solid. The Q400s are cheap and nasty feeling and IMO far inferior to the ATR72 - I don't think FlyBe even fit window blinds on their Q400s...

Managed to get through on the phone. Bloke answering seemed a bit confused - probably my fault as Im'm not sure what I'm doing, but there should be two boarding passes sent to the same phone. Dunno whether they appear on the same page, or swipe, or another page or out of thin air but, hey, it's a learning curve.

Just wish I could practice so I don't look a bumbling idiot in front of my pal (rather than a bungling idiot on here) again.

Not from Departures 3, which is where everyone was sent last time. Immigration down the stairs after D has been closed for a while as well, meaning quite a trek round to H, the usual LCC non-Schengen area.

Save it to Passbook on your phone, or equivalent app on your phone, it will store them in there.

At AMS you can go through any security (M gates excepted), it's often best looking for the one with the shortest queue.

Can't recall ever having waited more than a few minutes at Schiphol for security regardless.
