I have no idea where it is - all I know is it is routed 'Manchester CTRLZ'

Tickets with an origin and destination station in Greater Manchester which require you to transfer between Victoria and another Manchester station say "Route: Manchester CTLZ" Manchester CTLZ is the Metrolink city centre zone so allows you to do a free transfer on the Metrolink. It used to be "Route: Metrolink (GM)" but that was misleading as it meant "Altrincham to Smithy Bridge Route: Metrolink (GM)" was not valid on Metrolink services between Altrincham and Manchester.

As far as the Post Office were concerned in the 1970s Greater Manchester wasn't a new county and everywhere in Greater Manchester remained as having a Cheshire or Lancashire address except places handled by the central Manchester sorting office like Sale and Atherton.

I've never got off at Dronfield, just passed through many times, but it looks quite charming from the train - however, the name has associations with 'droning' and so dullness and boring talk (or maybe that's just me). I will pay a visit at some point to try out the local pubs, as I live close by (not actually in Duffield despite my user name, but not that far away).

According to Jeremy Clarkson it's Penis-tone instead of Pen-is-tone.

If you take the spelling of Burscough instead of the correct Lancashire pronunciation then it doesn't sound that nice - the correct pronunciation is Burs-co (as in co-operate.)

Agreed. Very early on in my countrywide journey was a walk from Lytham to Kirkham & Wesham to take in this seemingly out-of-place station.

Whilst I'm thinking of the Glossop line, someone had a sense of humour putting Godley next to Hattersley.

I often hear Flowery Field announced when I am in Manchester. I imagine the station to be in an idyllic location surrounded by a beautiful rural landscape. As it is in Manchester I assume the reality to be somewhat different

Shouldn't the pronunciation be more like 'Florry Field'? Less idyllic sounding....

Speaking of Daisy Hill I once bought a ticket from Marple to Moorside and the guy had never heard of the place though easily found it on the machine. I had to give him a Geography lesson.
Also the ticket Guy at Marylebone thought I was mad to be going up to High Wycombe for the evening when I asked for a zone 6 boundry extension. He said "I hope she is worth it" I was actually seeing a gig at Bucks Uni.

Yes, today I travelled on the Swiss rail network from Interlaken to Basel SBB. ON the edge of Bern (The Swiss capital) exists a station called 'Wankdorf'.

Pedant alert...

Technically, stations to the east of the Mississippi have a "W" prefix and to the west a "K". There are a few historical or erroneous exceptions to this rule but as far as I'm aware, all new allocations follow it.

Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG will sell you a '****-Pass' which on the English version of their website they say "Just the ticket for Mount **** enthusiasts"
