Met a friend today who lives in a Northern city which isn't Manchester. He asked for a day return to Flowery Field at the ticket office of this non-Manchester station.

"Are you taking the P***?" was the blunt reply.

I think he got the return to Manchester then rebooked.

What about Three Oaks to Four Oaks - where you have to travel via Sevenoaks....


I have had "interesting" reactions to two ticket purchases that I can think of. At Coventry station during my University of Warwick days, I asked for a return to Heath High Level; "can you write that down for me please" (in an irritated voice) was the reply. Years earlier, when buying a return from Ashtead to Strawberry Hill: "nobody goes there!" (incredulous voice).

...Then (on a slightly different note) there was the time I wanted to buy a ticket from Allerton booking office before it converted from APTIS. As it was going straight in my collection, I asked for one to West Allerton, the cheapest available fare. "You can walk that!" says he. (He still sold it to me though!)

That shows the power of the very large retail park at Middlebrook that is well known to those resident in Bolton.

There can be a whole thread dedicated to curiously named stations but back on this thread, it's obvious that less used stations aren't in the front of some ticket staff's mind and if you had asked me 3 years ago to tell you how to get to Healing, I'd have directed you to the hospital.

Not particularly odd, but I purchased a ticket from Wakefield Westgate to cover Birmingham to Coleshill Parkway recently (Sutton Park diversions) - "how are you spelling Coleshill" came the reply. Sadly I didn't know the code for Coleshill at the time

I have also purchased an Anglia Plus rover at Dewsbury and a Merseytravel Daytripper from Harrogate, which a few guards have made a mention of when checking tickets in the rover use area!

Yes, but if you've got a ticket machine you have little excuse as you can start typing and it should manage the rest.

Some people are a bit odd though - they'll turn up, buy a ticket and then wander down to the platform and ask for connection times to some random suburban shack in the middle of nowhere (I think Bridge of Allan was the best one I had on an English Midlands station) and seem incredulous that they're being sent back to the booking office as you don't have the whole national rail timetable in your head.

No, but if the customer asks for a ticket to one they haven't heard of, I would expect them to look it up!

Daisy Hill is definitely not in Manchester :P

As a regular of Daisy Hill for many years until i moved to University, I can assure you that out of the regular staff there are two polar opposites.

One member, for instance, didn't know you could book from Daisy Hill to Sheffield, and thought that it was only possible to get tickets for the Southport/Kirkby - Manchester line. It took her 20 minutes to sell me a Freedom of South Wales Rover (Think that's the name), even when I had the name/price etc written down and showed them to her.

In contrast, another member of staff is properly helpful. His knowledge of the ticketing system is exemplary, and he even suggests faster routes, cheaper tickets, ways to split tickets etc.

I was once at Kings Norton railway station and asked for a single to Rugeley Town but I was told that the station didn't exist, I then asked for one to Rugeley Trent Valley and I was told that didn't exist.

In the end said I thought the 3 letter code for it was RGT it did exist.

It was only last night with the advent of this thread someone mentioned to be about Flowery Field being one of the lesser nice places of the county - maybe when I visited (and walked there from Hyde North) I was lucky in making it through in one piece!

If you read my earlier posting, it is a district of Hyde, which itself is most certainly NOT in Manchester.

I asked yesterday for a ticket from Manchester Victoria to Flixton. The ticket office lady wouldn't sell me one as "trains dont go there for this station". Even when showing her the NR webste return she wouldn't have it an told me to get the free bus to Oxford Road.

I bought the ticket form the machine!

(what she meant was it was quicker & easier to go to Oxford Road but she didn't present it like that! - Anyway, I had time to kill and wanted a trundle so went via Salford Crescent and Deansgate)

I have no idea where it is - all I know is it is routed 'Manchester CTRLZ'

Edit: Its in Greater Manchester which is close enough!

Actually, it in the Westhoughton area which incidentally also has a named railway station on the different Bolton to Wigan line
