Flow with no off peak single

Is it relatively common to have no off peak single between two stations?

It is cheaper to get an off peak return than the only single available (which is an anytime) and wondered if this was unusual/any reason for it. Hard to explain, which gate staff must do all the time.

Very common. Though an off peak single is often added if the off peak return is less than the anytime single. The TOC may just not have noticed.

If there was an Off Peak Single it would probably be £5.50, so it wouldn't save much anyway.

There are even some instances of the off peak single being more expensive than the off peak return!
