Lots of flooding tonight including on the M5 where there is reports of vehicles being stranded by water. On the railways..

The track has been heavily flooded in the Wootton Bassett area to the west of Swindon, Wiltshire.

FGW said some trains are starting to run out of London Paddington but severe delays can be expected.

It added that passengers should listen for updates on local radio and await further developments.

'Passengers stranded'

The flooding at Wootton Bassett is causing disruption on the line into London Paddington, and another London-bound line is flooded at Westbury.

FGW also confirmed flooding on the Gloucester line and on the Weymouth and Oxford lines.

It said customers were being advised to stagger their journey home, and expect significantly longer journey times.

A spokesman said: "[There are] very limited long distance services leaving London Paddington, this is expected to continue for the rest of the evening.

I was only 15 min late. I went to catch the 1619 Cardiff Train, but the 1519 was still on the boards. It got cancelled. The 1544 Penzance became the 1600 Newcastle and left at 1620. Platform alteration to a train that was already sitting there, 1619 left 15 min late and ran as usual to Cardiff calling all stations (except Pilning). It seemed to be quicker as the guard was very punctual with the doors.

I had no idea why services were delayed though. I was late going home because of traffic and some moron blocking the yellow box on a roundabout!

Thousands of rail passengers travelling between London and Wales have been affected by flooding.

First Great Western said there were service delays, alterations and cancellations on services because of flooding in the West Country.

Many roads including the M4 and M5 interchange were affected by snowfall and flooding, with fears that homes and businesses could also be affected.

Bristol Airport temporarily closed its runway and advised of delays.

West Country train operator First Great Western (FGW) said tickets for Friday would be valid for Saturday and Sunday and advised people not to travel unless necessary.

The track between Swindon and Bath Spa was reported to be under water, with flooding to the west of Swindon also causing major problems.

On Thursday the E&G was flooded near Winchburgh junction which put a 20-25 minute delay on Edin-Glasgow journeys, but no delay Glasgow-Edinburgh..... Journey's in both directions to Dunblane from Edinburgh were affected as well.

Well I'd since heard that the main problem stopping my Cardiff services was the fact they couldn't get north of Weston, but there were no announcements to the effect, leaving commuters blaming FGW.

Quite a lot of flooding today, several lines already out in Yorkshire, and mainly across the south at Bedwyn on the Berks and Hants, around the Southampton/Bournemouth and Weymouth areas.

There's 48 flood warnings in force, effecting most rivers south of York, from the Tamar to the Thames, Severn, Trent, Ouse, Derwent, both Wyes, Cherwell, across the south and Midlands in particular.

bloody mad in work today, almost every service was cancelled or delayed due to wooton bassett, barnt green and I think there was also some in port talbot. I left at 2 though so didn't hear about Severn Tunnel Jct.

Ferries on a National scale also suffered, but mostly those in the South East. Wightlink to/from Fishbourne and Lymington-Yarmouth were largely unscathed however the FastCat did have just an hourly service for much of the day, with Hovertravel being suspended during the morning and early afternoon. The Port of Dover was closed to shipping entirely from around lunchtime until 4/5pm when the port operated on a 'one-in one-out' basis, with operation stack being laid down. Operation stack was also imposed up near Felixstowe in the morning and into the afternoon following the closure of the Trinity and Landguard terminals. Transeuropa in Ramsgate suffered some severe delays to departures following the disruption that their incoming sailings suffered, and Transmanche in Newhaven also reported some notable delays. Eurotunnel also reported some disruption, although I believe these were mainly for freight traffic.

Following heavy rain in northern England, a number of routes are currently flooded. As well as the railway, the flooding is affecting roads as well and Northern Rail are currently advising passengers not to travel. Unless otherwise mentioned, a limited replacement bus service will operate on all affected routes, subject to road conditions.

Flooding has closed one of England's key rail routes and caused major problems on motorways, with threats to homes across the country.

The West Coast Mainline was closed in Lancashire between Lancaster and Preston disrupting services between London and Scotland.

There were serious problems for drivers across England as traffic came to a standstill and roads were closed.

Elsewhere alarms were sounded to warn residents of severe flood danger.

At 1200 GMT on Monday, seven severe flood warnings and 83 flood warnings were in place across England and Wales.

Severe warnings were also in place in Wakefield and Skipton.

Traffic almost came to a standstill on the M1 and the M62 as heavy rain continued to fall across the region.

A woman and child were rescued by Humber Fire and Rescue Service crews after their car got stuck in flood water on the B1246 road between Pocklington and Warter.

Network Rail said flooding had forced the closure of the railway line between Sheffield and Barnsley.

A spokeswoman said water levels had risen above the rails at Elsecar in South Yorkshire and all local services between the two destinations had been suspended.

In Cumbria, motorists were being urged not to travel unless absolutely necessary and several roads were closed.

In Gloucestershire, residents were being asked to remain vigilant to the risk of flooding.

Northern have issued a new press release with a selection of new lines that are now also suspended. They advise passengers not to use their services unless absolutely necessary. Things don't appear to be too bad down South at the moment...

Here in Wales, my line, the Conwy Valley is still closed south of North Llanrwst due to the water not draining from the Llanrwst cutting, but trains still go down to North Llanrwst with a bus from there. Line has been shut for nearly 2 weeks now

The Cambrian also is till affected, with roads also bad in the Caersws area

It's not been two bad around here, just some flooding down in the Soar and Wreake Valleys. No problems on the railways, but the South Notts 1 from Loughborough to Nottingham is diverting due to flooding going out of Loughborough, missing out Stamford on Soar, which has been messing them up totally since the diversion involves passing two lots of major roadworks.

My train home was 55 minutes late today due to flooding between Blackpool North and Preston.
It's only a bloody hourly service anyway!

Why is everywhere getting so bad up North? Reckon we're over the worst?

Am i right in thinking that nothing has been sent over the S&C (VT wise)?

The 17:03 Super Voyager Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central, is showing up as being caped Lancaster & Oxenholme, running non-stop between Preston & Carlisle.

Could it be running over the S&C as i type? (Either that or it's been terminated at Preston).

I know that NRES is saying "No report" from Preston, but it's unlikely to pick the 221 up, if it is going over the S&C, as it would need to reverse at Preston.

I managed to get what I think was the only train out of York to Leeds, Leeds station was pretty much closed apart from the 300 or so commuters being queued round in a spiral in the concourse waiting for buses to arrive. It would have made a good photo but I think they would have lynched me!
