In the quantities it's been falling out of the sky over the past year...? Crazy!! The problem is not as simply as pumping out the ground water. We need to stop building on existing flood plains and provide places for flood water to go to when it can't drain away quickly enough.

Unfortunately, it is pretty hard to build in the UK without building on a "flood plain" of one type or another.

Building in such places has to be a calculated risk.

And that's why we get flooding, because often times the calculation is wrong. We cover over streams and rivers that would otherwise carry away excess rainwater, restrict the flow larger rivers where they pass through centres of population and don't provide adequate facilities for draining or storing excess water. So when we get a wet year, like this year, and the ground water level rises, there just isn't anywhere for the water to go.

Trent Water had the right idea, having built a large rainwater reservoir and flood protection barrier near the Derby-Notts line by Attenborough. This stores excess water until such time that the Trent can cope with draining the excess.

Similarly Exeter has wide flood channels either side of the city centre and the section through the centre is the old port was so is much wider, where the river narrows again (and ships headed down the canal) there is a large grass channel to take the excess away from the built up areas...

I remember in late 2000 when there was the combination of post Hatfield 20 mph TSRs and flooding blocking the line between Taunton and Exeter.

I've just got home after a rail replacement ride back home from Exeter, Cowley Bridge junction is completely underwater, don't expect north bound trains out of Exeter for a while. To be honest the bus ride was more comfortable than the 143 pacer is was on!

Sounds like a repeat of 2000 then. It was my undersanding that work had been done to prevent a reccurence so this weather must have been even more extreme.

Where do you stand on a day like this if you are able to make half of a return journey but due to cancellations your are unable to return? Back in 2002 I had to go from Taunton to Newton Abbot on a day where services had been severely disrupted to to weather. The outward journey was delayed by a few hours and I had planned to return on the last train of the day but when I arrived back at Newton Abbot station this had been cancelled. The platform staff just told me "We are advising people not to travel, We can't offer a service today" so I ended up paying to get the sleeper to Paddington and then returning to Taunton via Bristol early the next day rather than sit on the platform all night at Newton Abbot.
I thought the sleeper called at Taunton?

Not on Sunday into Monday. I've edited the post to clarify. It was frustrating as it actually went through Taunton and even stopped at Bristol (I believe Bristol was a booked passenger stop back then on weekdays but not Sunday into Monday). The first passenger stop after leaving Exeter though was Reading.

Incident on the GEML at Goodmayes at around 6.45PM - looks like a person hit by train but the line was closed for nearly 2 hours for an investigation - without going into details, what happened ?

Apparently the line west of Castle Cary may be closed for a few days.

Despite extensive searching, nothing was found.

Does anyone know why at BHM, the stairs to platforms 4/5b were closed? I wondered if rainwater had come through, the platform was wet near the bottom of the stairs (you had to go via platforms 4/5a).

The line between Oxford and Worcester Shrub Hill has been shut due to a fire on board a train at Evesham. Believe it's one of the 180's. 19:44 Great Malvern to Paddington is the service involved.

Xc con today!! Took the 12.15 southampton central to Stafford (Bournemouth to man pic) and it was severely delayed at reading. They took us to didcot parkway and said that it was not going anywhere and best advice is travel back to reading or into London for north services. As I arrived in reading the delayed 13.15 southampton to Stafford (Bournemouth to man pic) was just about to depart. I asked the guard will this train run to Oxford ( as it was reading to Oxford that was flooding) and he said yes.. And it did!! So why was the 12.15 adamant it couldn't go further than didcot? Was this because they were just so delayed they didn't wanna go further ie keep the train south so it could return to Bournemouth on time?? Disgraceful

On train staff often recieve contradicting information and it is often difficult for them to know.

To be fair, the lines will have been inspected regularly, with them opening and closing to traffic as water levels altered. Also train crews end up misplaced etc.

We provide the best information we have available at the time, as time goes on that information will change and better plans are put in place where ever possible.

As staff we can't win, we provide an answer that is honest at the time and people moan when it turns out to be slightly inaccurate. If we shrug our shoulder and say "I don't know mate, listen to announcements on the platform or go and see the information desk", people moan staff are useless and don't provide any information.

Network Rail have just tweeted a photo of Cowley Bridge Junction yesterday. It looks quite damp...

A landslip in the Thornhill area has closed the line between Dumfries and Kilmarnock.

The Shotts line was also closed for a bit due to flooding at Harthill but the rapid response team managed to divert the water away from the line and re open it.

I was travelling to Leicester yesterday from Sheffield , was travelling on East Midlands Trains 13-27 , we left Sheffield about 30 mins late due to late arival incoming. After leaving Sheffield it was announced that we would not be calling at Derby due to Flloding between Chesterfield and Derby, so any passengers for Derby change ar East Nidlands Parkway as we will be diverting from booked route. After Chesterfield we wnet through a tunnel and came to a stop ( Signal Check ) then proceded slowly, then looking at four foot below was a stream running passed us and this carried on for a while. My thought if this is the other route then whats the main one like then?
Not long after the guard announced that we had gone the booked route if any one realised that and it was back to normal, no East Midlands Parkway for Derby , but Derby itself from the North direction as planned.

Other places are getting a battering too. Services suspended between Holyhead and Llandudno Junction and between Carlisle and Hexham.

Only the South-west and parts of Wales and Cumbria being affected so far.
