Ultimately I don't think they were any worse or better than Megabus, so based on that they will probably get my custom going forward if their prices remain cheaper!

If they do that well I wouldn't bet on Stagecoach not selling up to them as they did the European operations. I'm not convinced there is room in the market for three operations, and I very much doubt they would kill established (and higher quality) NatEx.

Thanks for the replies about the branding!
Had an interesting trip to London over the weekend (which is why I asked the question in the first place).
Outward coach was mainly all white with a small Flixbus green logo, and return was one of the fully green ones (which was also a lot nicer inside!).

Coach from Bristol to London was half hour late from Bristol and there were quite a few worried faces whilst we were waiting for it to turn up (presumably wondering the same as me if this coach from a relatively new company was going to turn up). Thankfully it did and we had about 30 people so it was fairly busy (that is a rough estimate based on the number before boarding so may be wrong but at the very least once onboard it looked like every pair of seats had at least one person if not two). The actual journey was a nightmare though, not Flixbuses fault (M4 around slough shut and bad London traffic) so we were about 75 minutes late in the end (so in realty about 45 mins lost on route considering the half hour late departure) - though I do wonder if we could have gone another way rather than through Slough town centre!

The return journey was a lot quieter (maybe 10 people) and we were ready to depart a good ten mins early and kept really good time (we were just ten mins late arriving into Bristol and that included a diversion up the M40 and then down the A404 to avoid the M4 closure mentioned above).

Ultimately I don't think they were any worse or better than Megabus, so based on that they will probably get my custom going forward if their prices remain cheaper!
My experience had a lot of delays in it as well. Mostly down to a lack of communication. Drivers didn't know the route fully so was following the sat nav (Which doesn't send you through bus gates understandably) and then didn't know if they could use the Mersey Tunnels and be reimbursed (meaning a nice diversions using the M56/M6, stopping at Burtonwood for a legal break and then getting into Liverpool around 2h 30 late. Return trip was much smoother (it was the same bus and driver. I had planned to have an hour in Liverpool but that didn't happen of course) but still a lengthy delay from the outbound trip. Not sure how it's all going at the minute as every Flixbus that I see in Chester goes a different way. I saw one going past the Train Station the other week. I believe Thandi are taking on the 021 via Chester shortly so we will see how they get on.

If they do that well I wouldn't bet on Stagecoach not selling up to them as they did the European operations. I'm not convinced there is room in the market for three operations, and I very much doubt they would kill established (and higher quality) NatEx.
Megbus have an opportunity to increase the network by a few hundred percent overnight if they wanted to, using local Stagecoach buses (Connection only though so for example X17 Barnsley to Meadowhall for the coaches to London. Cov to Warwick Uni on the U12 etc). They are yet to exploit some local bus services but they could do overnight and this would massively increase their reach. While yes it's using local buses, it's already done in some cases.

NatEx have the established demand which may help them out.

Flixbus will have price on their side if they go down the old Megabus route of only a full or nearly full bus makes a profit.

If each 3 went for more destinations, and focussed on some shorter distance but still intercity demand, there could be gaps in the market for 3 companies but if each one keeps going for the same few routes, I am not sure if the demand will be there. There are only so many people wanting to travel from Bristol to London by coach and even if everyone had 99p fares, there are still only so many people wanting to make that journey. Each firm has it's own sole positive point and that won't be enough. I think it will come down to who is willing to invest in more destinations/routes and provide better customer service. NX and Flix have dismal customer service. Megabus doesn't have the network nor the competitive prices (at least not competitive compared to how they were)

In other news, unreported here, Flixbus are changing services again. Tickets to/from Heathrow can now be purchased as well as timetable changes on a few of the routes and York now had an additional daily service.

This may have changed, but at one time the Megabus Barnsley to London link was to go on the X10 to Leeds (an hour in the wrong direction). I am sure this was after Stagecoach operated the X65 (subsequently X17) from Barnsley to Meadowhall.

On Megabus, you can't do a connecting journey to anywhere from Barnsley. Only the X10 to Leeds, that's it. Any connecting journey is under a separate ticket. Linking it to the X17 though would make more sense as it's going in the right direction and makes sense for passengers since anyone with a brain would make that journey anyway (and pay separately) and not go via Leeds.

Yes there are a number of changes coming in the next few weeks. The first change of which is this Thursday, with extra journeys on 002 and 009 to Leeds and York at least by Whippets. No changes to Thandi or Turners journeys as far as I can remember. There has been additional changes since I worked on a timetable on Saturday so I am a while off confirming everything!
Newcastle is added to the network in a few weeks too, extending some of the Leeds terminators up there!

I believe Thandi are taking on the 021 via Chester service. Currently being ran by Whippets. From 1st July, there seems to be additional Birmingham departures, looks to just be Birmingham to London.

Good to see the network slowly expanding. Interestingly, the London - Heathrow tickets have gone and there are no connection tickets available for the journey. I wonder if they have realised that they need an London Service Permit to convey London to Heathrow passengers. It's good to see some of the expansion. I can only hope that Chesters service becomes more useful shortly.

Seen yesterday on the M56 - BV69 LPF from Ridley of Warwick, a Mercedes Benz Tourismo working the 021 09:00 London to Liverpool via Chester Service. It looks as though they are not using the Mersey tunnel for this route as it came past me twice near Chester services!

Probably to save on tunnel fees, the cheapskates!

You will save on tunnel fees but it will cost you with extra fuel and wear and tear. It's about an extra hour now as you have to go over Thellwall Viaduct as Runcorn bridges now charge.

I get avoiding the tolls but it's not good. They really need to provide clarification on the tolls as it's crippling the punctuality.

As markymark2000 says I really cant see the saving. If they're using three axle vehicles it might just cost less in fuel however add in all the other costs plus passenger delay and it's barmy (If that's what they're actually doing).

My driver said he did the diversion because he didn't know if he could get it reimbursed. He checked in Liverpool and Whippets said they would reimburse so came back through the tunnel.

I wonder if that is it. Miscommunication somewhere with people unaware of the tolls so drivers don't know if they will be paid for them and so avoiding as the tolls the driver pays out of pocket, fuel isn't.

That would certainly explain it, and I've certainly heard about drivers having issues getting reimbursed in the past. (The Severn Bridge toll machines used to cause issues because they'd be out of paper or jammed so the driver suddenly has a queue behind him and would be £18 out of pocket if he cant get a receipt from somebody) However something like that should really be put on the driver's duty card to reassure them.

How much are the tolls? I thought it would be only around £10 return for using them?. It's interesting to see who pays for the hundreds of local bus services that use the routes every day.

£3.60 two axle or £5.40 tri axle. This can be reduced though with a fast tag to £2.40 or £3.60.

Local buses pay via fast tag which is then charged to the company accounts. If no tags are available though, driver pays out of the cash tray and then pays in less at the end of the day with an explanation as to why they have done so.

Here's v7 of my PDF schedule for the Flixbus UK routes - including the new routes starting next Thursday, 1st July to Newcastle, Leamington and Bath plus all of the enhancements that started yesterday on various other routes.
Whippets were covering Thandi work but have now ceased with their new work starting yesterday, Thandi now have Ridleys and Star Tours covering today whilst they're still short of coaches, and it appears Turners are helping Whippets out now with at least two Van Hools on their runs today. Rapid expansion at the minute...

There's a link here from S1 Jobs:

Due to continued expansion we are now looking for experienced InterCity Coach Drivers for an exciting new project which will commence in the very near future.
This role involves overnights, working up to five nights per week, and double manned duties will be normal. Please note Intercity coach experience is Essential. This role involves working away from home so successful candidates must have a suitable lifestyle to accommodate this.

The successful candidates must have experience of Intercity coach work, a Current PCV licence, valid CPC card and an up to date Tachocard is required.

Thanks, @olddriver for the link.

It’s funny how a lot of flixbus drivers I have encountered are National Express rejects. One is a driver who was sacked for failing the breathalyser. The standards at flixbus aren’t exactly high.

They also don’t route learn their drivers very well. One flixbus had to follow a National Express back to Cardiff…

Aren't the drivers employed by the contractors, not Flixbus themselves? (Just like with National Express).

Could Flixbus specify who is employed?

National Express do run and operate some services with their own drivers. Not so many before the pandemic but they operate much more now.

And well if it’s run by the same way National Express do then yes they could and should specify. Drivers of third party companies doing services for National Express could be kicked off the network, yet still have their job with the third party company.

They weren’t Whippets drivers

I hope flixbus is up to date with there knowledge of Scottish Regulations. You can just see it coming, where they will try and fill up the coaches to max capacity believe the English rules apply north of the border.

They didn't even know the Mersey Tolls existed and they have been in place for many years so I wouldn't put much hope on them knowing about the Scottish rules.

Do you know what capacity megabus use on cross border trips?

Also flixbus don’t use two drivers on really long routes like National Express do. Parts of the route the drivers have openly told me they remove their tacho ( which is obvs illegal) but hey ho. Keep up with practices like that, they won’t be around for long.
