Apologies if this is in the incorrect forum, but i am looking to move to near the Peterborough area and my work allows for flexible work days. Therefore i am looking at the flexi season ticket of 2 days per week for 4 weeks. I see that most fast trains from Peterborough are LNER to King's Cross, though there is also Thameslink trains.

When i go to chose the flexi ticket for Peterborough to King's Cross, it says £452.90 for "Valid only on Great Northern & Thameslink services." My question is, is that valid for the LNER trains as well? Is LNER part of Great Northern or vice versa?

Many thanks

No.
No.
It looks like it's £647 if you include LNER services.

Where are you looking? Trainline has a bug that only shows random routes and not all available routes. If you go and speak to our lovely team at Peterborough Travel Centre they'll opffer you the best bet.

With the LNER Flexi Season costing more than £80 a journey, you should definitely take a look to see whether it might be cheaper to buy Advances. Obviously that is much less flexible and there are no guarantees that attractively priced Advances will always be made available.

If your work days can vary in different weeks, worth considering a weekly ticket - to do (say) Wed + Thur + Mon + Tue

Thanks for the replies. I was using the national rail site calculator here National Rail Enquiries - Season Ticket Calculator

I find it astonishing that the flexi ticket for LNER is so expensive coming in at over £80 per journey, it is ridiculous. Is that because it would be effectively anytime tickets? For example i looked last night at booking a return for today, and it comes in at £55 for the return journey on LNER (7.45am out, 5.45pm return); but obviously that would be tickets for specific trains rather than just turning up/reserving a seat on any train.

Yes, they are Anytime tickets, and give unlimited travel between the two points. For comparison check the Anytime Short Return fare - £121.20.

It's a discount of about a third compared to the walk-up fare, which as @Haywain says is more than £120 a journey.

Of course, given the walk-up fare is 80p/mile, even with a 1/3 discount that's still very expensive.

The fundamental issue here is that most people would, in my view not unreasonably, expect to pay something closer to the season ticket's daily rate (£42).

Unfortunately HM Treasury doesn't see it that way...
