Flask wagon with no barriers?

I'm no expert on freight, so forgive me if this is old news, but I happened to see 2 DRS 37s rolling through Forest Gate this morning with a nuclear flask wagon in tow.
But what was surprising (to me) was that that was the entire consist, there were no barrier wagons at all. I though all flask wagons were required to run with barriers?

Not any more. Haven't done for a number of years now.

I think certain trains still have barriers but the majority don't.

They were done away with quite some time ago on Nuclear waste trains. There used to be some chemical tanker trains around Teesside that still had barriers, but I'm not sure if they still run. There used to be one that ran from Runcorn as well IIRC.

Not any more. Haven't done for a number of years now.

At the time that Direct Rail Services took over the traffic in 1997, I think.

I though they always use double headed locos to double the distance the driver is from the radioactivity in order to reduce the intensity of exposure over time.
