Hi,

I was at Preston yesterday waiting for a train and noticed a 331 on the opposite platform with one of the the BIL/hazard lights flashing in coach A (opposite side from the the platform it was using).

All the other hazard lights on that side of the train were steady on.

The train departed on time so I guess it’s normal just don’t know what it means :)

Thanks

Probably like the Desiros (and such) the BIL will flash where the guards key is active.

Am I right in thinking that the BIL on 195s stops flashing once the Conductor has closed their local door, whereas on a 350, the BIL continues to flash for a few seconds after the local door has been closed?

On the Desiros, isn't it when the guard keys out of the panel, rather than when the doors close?

It’s when the guard keys off or the train reaches 6mph. Technically speaking the guard shouldn’t be keying off until the panel automatically extinguishes in case the need to give one on the bell arises.

It’s now a standard feature on modern stock to indicate where the train is being despatched from and first appeared on the 350s. It basically means the DKS (door control switch) is active here. All desiro stock have this feature as do 80x fleets and the CAF stock. Not sure if Bombardiers newest fleets feature it but flashing BILs were introduced after the voyager/meridian fleets were built

On 185s if the train is being despatched from a GOP (guard operating panel) and the train doors have been closed the light stops flashing once the conductor has keyed out. (Turned the DKS off) The GOP doors will then close at this point but the panel is still energised to operate the bell buzzer. The doors can be reactivated at any time by turning the DKS back on.

The 360s and 450s came before the 350s, so wouldn’t they have been first?

Ok, I thought the 350s were first, Can’t comment on wether the older 360s have the same feature as I haven’t seen one in traffic

The first 350s were part of the extended 450 Order but the SRA diverted the stock.

I don't think they were ever built for use as Class 450.
The original SWT order was 45 x 5-car 444, 100 x 4-car 450 (450001-100) and 32 x 5-car 450.

The SRA declined to pay for the platform extensions for 10-car 450 suburban use, so the order was changed with the 32 x 5-car (160 cars) becoming 10 x 4-car 450 (450101-110) and 30 x 4-car 350 (350101-130) (also 160 cars). The 350s went into a joint pool for Silverlink and Central Trains.

Whether the 350s were built as 450s, who knows - the shells may have been but they were never completed as 450s.
