Flam Railway

I’m planning an interrail trip in July and Oslo to Bergen is a route I’m intending to do. Would very much like to do the Flam line enroute but I would have my luggage with me - is this advisable? (sorry for lack of accented characters but I am a UK crank lol)

Depends how much luggage I suppose. I'm not aware of luggage facilities but I also didn't look because I did it as a day trip from Bergen, which is definitely possible if you want to completely avoid taking any luggage around.

Ex main line stock is used on the line - I've taken a wheelie case without issue. Mr. Google tells me there is limited luggage storage in the cafe at Myrdal or proper luggage lockers at Flam. Interrail is unfortunately not valid on the line although there is a discount.

Sorry, but you'll get your own memories. I have a lot more pictures, the first time well wrapped up in August in dismal, cold and windy weather. More recently in warm June sunshine when shorts could have been worn.

The first time in 1964 was on a 'Norway in a Nutshell' day trip (still advertised in Voss) centred on Voss and using the boat from Gudvangen to Flam. In 2024 we were en route from Bergen on the fast ferry to Flam, then from Myrdal to Voss for 2 nights before returning to Oslo by train. Our luggage was taken ahead by train from Bergen direct to Voss. I don't recall many, if any, with heavy luggage on the Flam railway. Mostly lighter back packs, probably because most were doing an up and down trip from their cruise ship.

I hve lots more good photos from sunny 2024, but those miserable ones from 1964 helped to draw me back.

Our trip in 2024 was booked throughout using "Norway in a Nutshell", which I found very easy to use and almost infinitely flexible although possibly less useful if you're Interrailing. Our booking with them involved a train from Bergen to Voss, coach to Gudvagen, ferry to Flåm, two nights in Flåm, Flåm railway up to Myrdal and train to Oslo (on which we spent four hours talking to a Norwegian who informed us that Norwegians don't like talking to strangers!). We had luggage in two fairly large suitcases and never had any problems with them. As Killingworth suggested, maybe the fact that the railway is largely cruise-oriented means that luggage capacity just isn't an issue.

We've been to Norway many times and never found any problems speaking to the very friendly Norwegians we've met. They mostly speak excellent English, although you won't encounter many on the Flam railway. Even back in 1964 it was tourist dominated, mostly American.

Ok thanks, how much would a hindrance would lugging a big backpag around whist at Flam?

No more of a hindrance than anywhere else. It’s compact and frankly, there’s not much there beyond retail. It’s a place to wait for your onward connection. We swam in May but it was seven degrees in the water.

It's also pretty flat which makes it easier!

Very nice. Ive done every line in Norway except the Flam line, I should go back at some point
