Well today I received a much anticipated phone call from govia saying that subject to medical they want me to work at potters Bar as a platform assistant!
However those wonderful words came up "fixed term contract" for a year, and it's my understanding this happens a fair bit, so normally what is the likelihood of this being extended after that on the railway?

Some franchisees (Virgin WC) will do that if they are extra staff (above franchise commitment) and are near the end of the franchise.

Others use it to cover for people who have been temporarily redeployed, maternity, to see if you are any good, to plus a hundred other reasons.

I don't know GTR at all but I would say there was a good chance of a proper contract at the end of it, or possibly a recommendation for you to apply for a different job.

The worse thing that could happen is you work on the railways for a year getting some valuable experience.

Going from my experience of working for two totally different railway companies, a fixed term contract almost always means a permanent post. If you are in any doubt though you will be privy to the internal vacancy list. As soon as you can, start applying for full time posts.
