That's pretty poor!
Usually this service has about an eleven minute layover at Cardiff, so hopefully pax will be able to hop off quick and have a wee!

Those poor people! Hopefully as DanTrainMan185 says that there will be enough slack in the timetable for them to be able to use a loo.

Really I think ATW should arrange an extended call at Shrewsbury, as well as the extended call at Cardiff so passengers don't have to be on the train for more than 2 hours without a toilet.
Also I wonder if an announcement was by station staff at Piccadilly to give people a chance to use station toilets before boarding?

I would hope that the guard would announce before leaving Manchester to tell them to use the toilet before they leave the station.

Well the train is already at Stockport now so it's a bit late for that! 
Unfortunately I won't be at home when it passes my house at about 7.10, so I won't be able to see what stock it is. Could be the usual 175 but don't they have two toilets on board? If so, for BOTH odf them to be out of order must be pretty poor!

Metro style services like Merseyrail and LO can continue to operate without a toilet. However, services where a toilet is provided must have toilet provision for wheelchair users. Sounds fair - if a passenger who can walk might need the toilet then surely someone in a wheelchair might as well.
The debatable scenario is some trains have accessible and non-accessible toilets, so what happens if the fitted accessible toilet is out-of-order?
Lol it has yes and it is 6 minutes down already. And I would hope for the passengers that it is a 175 but my gut feeling is it is probably a 150.

Departed Manchester 2 minutes late - so maybe waiting for someone to return from the toilet.
Unless they've got a 150 filling in the train should have 2 toilets. On a 175 both toilets could be out-of-service if the retention tanks haven't been emptied recently enough.

I am pretty sure these services usually use either platform 3 or 4, both of which are on the same platform island. The toilets on this island are currently out of use. Not exactly a great situation to have. Passengers would probably have enough time to go on one of the other platform islands, but certainly I wouldn't want to be risking it if there is a queue for the other toilets!
Could the passengers complain to ATW and get something back i wonder.

I've been on a Northern S&C service before for the same problem and the train made an extended stop at Skipton to allow the passengers to use the facilities. A delay is better than the alternative.

I would hope Advance tickets would be honoured on the next train if people felt unable to risk travelling on that one. For that reason I would also hope the situation was made known before the train left Manchester.

I would certainly argue that one. I would not take a 5-hour journey on a train without toilets, not even if toilet stops were provided as there's still the risk of leaving luggage unattended or having to faff about packing away and taking with you. I would rather pay for a walk-up ticket and argue afterwards than do that, if it came to it.

because there's unlikely to have been spare stock anywhere nearby, so they had the option of:
A: Run the service without a loo
B: cancel
Thankfully, common sense picks A.

I agree, provided (a) it's on the PIS (ha!) so passengers know in advance, and (b) Advance tickets are accepted on the previous and following service for those whose bladder etc are not adequate for such a journey.

That's a key issue. I've similarly been on long train journeys where it's only been announced after departure that there is no catering. It can't be that difficult to get a message to stations in order for an announcement before departure.

It's precisely this that is causing the vicious circle of demise of on-train catering. If you can't trust it, you buy before you board, then you don't need it.

Good job it's not on an AMTRAK service, I was travelling from Chicago to Flagstaff and one toilet in the whole set was out of order, but state law was until the offending loo was fixed, the train was going nowhere, so we departed 3 bloody hours late!
