I was wondering with the 769/230 projects and many new EMUs due to come off lease soon (i.e. 707s), what would be the possibility of fitting Diesel engines to these and using as a bi-mode like the 769s? Or pantographs? It could help find a new home for them as otherwise it seems a waste.

far easier to strip all the electrics out of the EMUs, re-engine some more 73s, and so create a fleet of push-pull hybrids. I'm sure a fleet of 10 car 442s with the motors and electrics removed, top and tailed by a pair of 73/9 EDs would easily keep to time. That way you'd end up with both coaches and power systems becoming life expired together in 10-15 years. Ideal stopgap.........

Where are you getting these 73s and 442s from?

The only motors and electrics in Class 442s are in the centre power car, the other 4 carriages are basically standard Mk. 3 coaching stock (except for the driving cabs of course). If you wanted to have loco hauled trains formed of Class 442s, you could just remove the centre cars.

Really? Some of the stock mentioned is 40 years old, 40 years... We aren’t talking about comfy Mk3 coaches either but antiquated metro stock like 319s.

I'd take a Class 319/2 (2+2 Chapman seating with generous spacing and plenty of tables) over most stock, including a Mk3 with IC70 seating. Give them a nice interior and possibly add Chiltern-type air cooling and people really won't mind.

This is basically what at least one of the TPE bidders was going to do, isn't it?
