Interesting news. Driver in Wells told me:
46603 is now stuck at the back of the depot because it's basically missing a gearbox.
69441 is no longer used at nights as the gears stick a lot.
2 of the B10s have now got over 1 million miles on them.

How interesting.

Random info! ;)

Speculating that the B10s in question are 66107 & 66108. And I'm sure 46603 will be back on the road soon. I honestly think it will see out the year. Still haven't been able to catch 69445, but heading down that way later, so hopefully.

Something I was wondering about; I noticed on a recent 375 journey to Bridgwater that it no longer serves the back of Street (Ivy Thorn Lane etc) and follows the route of the 29. Is this now served by the 376 or something? Does it do a big loop, or is this part of Street simply no longer served?

So would my sighting of 46603 on Friday be my last glimpse of it in service. It's demise has been expected so many times and yet it has always survived. That said, I'm surprised that with so many Darts coming spare from FHD that it's survived. Then again, they're all non DDA too so almost irrelevant but if the gearbox has gone, then expect some aged longer Dart to head south to WS

41335 has now joined the Wells depot. I'm assuming this has replaced 46603.

Interesting moves in Wells. 41333, 41334 and 41335 are now there. 46603 has definitely gone and I think even 41144 has finally gone. The 161 is looking much better now.

48217 was also parked up in the depot today. I knew that would happen. Any crap they have going tends to head to Wells or Devon and Cornwall. Grrrr.

I'd like to think that 48217 is being used for spare parts, if not, hopefully it will replace the dreaded 66100.

Wells depot now appears to have 24 buses. The PVR is 20.

Makes a change from the last year or so when they have generally been short. I suspect though that the 24 isn't permanent, rather just a transition stage and a few will disappear within a week or two and it will settle down. I wonder what that B6 will replace? And looks like Wells has become Marshall city, I really hoped it wouldn't. Really though 41144 would be the last. :p
Nonetheless, interesting to see what comes and goes.

Depends on what the 24 actually are. I've got 22 there assuming that 48217 is NFS, and that 46603/41144 have also "bought the farm"

  • 66100/7/8
  • 69437-48
  • 41333-5
  • 43849
  • 42730/1/8
Am I missing something?

66160 is still going, not that I've seen it for a while.
The other uncertainty is 66106 and 69437. Still have no idea if the former will return, and whether or not the latter is there to stay. Perhaps that B6 has replaced 66106?

The 24 includes 48217 and 66160. And I was wrong about 41144 - it's still laying around. 48217 looks like it's only for spare parts. Today there are 3 Marshall's, 48217 and 66108 in the depot.

Think that's safe to assume now, its tax runs out today. It lasted well considering it was due for withdraw in March.

Still out and about, believe it was on the 377 today.

Wells was short of buses yesterday. Supposedly there were a lot of breakdowns yesterday.

The 16.43 from Wells and the 18.00 (same bus) were cancelled.

Not particularly good at Christmas time.

Just thought i'd get this thread reopened rather than fill up the South West thread with Wells stuff.

Looking through this and remembering so many different buses wells has had in the last couple of years.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
53401 spending most of its time lately on 375 - hopefully means it will be sent elsewhere in a couple of weeks - just like the 375. Never know it might end up like 375 - cut up into 3 pieces, keep the section which will be the least useful, but send it elsewhere, dispose of a third and send the front section to BoS to play with it.

Still crazy that 375 and 377 go to BoS and Wells lose 6 vehicles. Then they have to run 178/379 in September. Do they not think back to when the chopped and played around last time and what happened then - Webberbus started 37 and 38.

Damn should have read this one first, just left a post about 53401 in the other thread. Rather it being allocated to 161 as it originally was, it does now seem to be permanent spare, and only then appears on a couple of routes.

Sadly the 375 just doesn't have future. First have run it well for years and years, and have really tried to keep it going, but there just isn't enough demand for two buses an hour to Bridgwater, and the better option for many would surely be the direct, shorter 37. A great pity though.
Will see how 377 will work from BoS, but though I quite like the 54/55/77 circuit that will be operating, one wonders how long it will last. But I wish them every success, even if I still think 377 is better worked from Wells.
As for 178/379, they must have something up their sleeves, but yes I really do wonder how it will work. They used to do 379 but it was different then, and worked ok, but not brilliant. I think it's perfect at the moment. And I do hope Bath will gain something in return, otherwise it's further major loss for them.

Well Catcott and the various villages won't have a service from 8th May as far as i can see. Webberbus haven't put through any sort of route change to their 37. M
i've heard quite a few people ranting to the First drivers about how those villages won't have any bus.

I quite agree that 375 can't stay in its current format, but i still think that my plan for 375 would have been better (i.e. hourly Wells to Street and 2 hourly beyond that or interwork 29 with 375, having both routes 2 hourly).

And I really don't see this 54/55/77 circuit lasting.

It is undoubtedly true that passenger flows tend to start at Wells in the morning and finish there in the evening. So in a pure logistics sense, it would make sense to run the 375, 377 and 29 from Wells.

However, I can see why the changes have been made and I don't think your plans would bear fruit. Here's why...

A two hourly 375 south of Street would not have much competitive advantage. From Woolavington to Bridgwater, it would be a two hour service vs. two buses per hour from WB. A two hourly service from Wells/Street to Bridgwater (for what little end to end traffic there is) also doesn't compete against an hourly WB service. There is little traffic from the Polden Villages which even you have witnessed. My anecdotal observations have always shown that Bridgwater to Woolavington is the main traffic until you reach Street, and that is doubtless why BoS are going for the 73 (and I'd assume they have done so after looking at the passenger data). That they can operate it around schools work means that they can do it at a near marginal cost and have a 30 min frequency that is much more competitive.

A 90 min frequency 29 has been tried before - it isn't sustainable as there's not many passengers. The amount of end to end traffic (from Wells/Street to Taunton) is minimal and arguably, WB 38 has the advantage being more frequent and quicker. Therefore, running a 55 as a spoiler makes much more sense and should compete more effectively for the traffic out of Somerton and Langport which are the only real towns in that area. I do share the concerns about timings and reliability with the interworking of the 77 though.

I also am a little bemused by the 178/379 heading to Wells depot on two counts IF it does happen. Firstly, how it will be operated? The idea of a staff car is one (and does happen elsewhere) but given how unreliable those routes can be with Bristol traffic, it is a concern. Secondly, the fact that the 375/377 changes are happening now but the 178/379 is mooted to in September. So Wells will have a surfeit of staff that will have to be used on loan elsewhere in the meantime.

However, I can see the rationale behind many of these changes. The driver pool in Bristol and Bath is now becoming exhausted and they're struggling to recruit and retain. You could increase the pay rates but say you give them a 50p an hour increase in Bath and Bristol, then work that up across the number of drivers over the year. A lot of money! Hence, the solution is to operate some of the routes from Wells and Weston - the dead mileage cost is much less.

Also, I do take Baza585's point that by making these changes, First have BoS competing head on with Webberbus on a consistent front rather than a mish mash of First and BoS (21 and 26 excepted).

If you think that competing off peak on the 14 and 73 misses out the main customer base (i.e commuters) then sorry to say but ENCTS passengers now make up a very high level of usage on those routes (unlike the 376 for instance). By operating around schools work, they can do so at a near marginal cost; to be honest, very much in the way that Faresaver have done so in Wiltshire against First.

I'll be sad that I can't do the Street to Bridgwater bit using a First day ticket in future but I can see the logic in why they're doing it and it is probably the right thing to do.

From 9th to 28th May Webberbus will be running 375 FREE.
After that 37 will be diverted from A39 to serve the villages.

How on earth can there operate for free? Just because a bus is free doesn't mean it will get all the passengers.

You just watch this, "from the Local paper in a days after the Free running" Parents angry over joy rid for kids, with kids disappearing for the evening.

This is rural Somerset not a dodgy Bristol estate.

AND? Kids are kids.

Eh?

I think that CD's point was that these are very small villages with very few people (see 2011 census)

Catcott (531)
Cossington (564)
Chilton Polden (698)

The idea that there's gangs of feral kids roaming around as in a sink estate (as per Bristol) is frankly preposterous. Also, they're pretty well heeled places.

Not withstanding that there's no evening buses so I hardly think you're going to see kids heading into Bridgwater for free without a means to get home.

Really?

What evening services??!!

Might be wrong to assume (it usually is) but is this just a way for WB to a) gain good publicity and b) introduce a route change prior to a registration going through VOSA
You can be sure that it is Somerset County Council that will be paying for the "free" buses.

I never said feral kids ;) Let see what happens over the coming month.

"You just watch this, "from the Local paper in a days after the Free running" Parents angry over joy rid (sic) for kids, with kids disappearing for the evening."

What kids? What are they doing? Disappearing to the opera in Bridgwater? If they're disappearing for the evening, how will they get back?

The idea that ANY kids are going for free "joy ride" on a bus without the ability to get back.... yeah.....

Stop digging, before you hit Australia!

Well said GW. Made me chuckle. Completely agree. The vast bulk of people in those areas are elderly, so this idea of kids roaming the streets is silly.

Really quite a silly idea of Webberbus - it will annoy SCC even more, but will gain publicity.
They really are going to go bust at this rate (hopefully).

A very good reply to my earlier message too - completely agree and it is generally what I think (just couldn't put it into those words), but i'm still annoyed of what they've done and I don't think it'll pay off in the long run.

Can someone explain to me what 375 will be then? Is it Street-Bridgwater every 2 hours?

Hi There,
I expect Webberbus will use a Solo on this service or that old 52 reg Beaver 2 if it's still going. Only needs a small vehicle given the loadings.
Cheers, Mike R

Quick question - if I was to get a job in Yeovil and was commuting on 77 each day, I would buy a £15 week ticket on BoS. But as I travel on WoE buses elsewhere on weekends, could I still use the £15 week ticket? Could I say use it from Wells-Salisbury (via Bath) on a Saturday?

You'll have to contact them for a definitive answer but I suspect not as the WoE ticket is £25.
