First Trip On A Desiro

Just a few bits in reply to posts, I’ve found that some of the 444s are starting to creek above the bogies, oddly though it’s only in the 500 coach (TOSLW). Perhaps some units do make similar noises in other coaches but as I tend to spend more time in that particular coach I’ve noticed it more there.

In regards to the aircon, certainly on 3rd rail there’s a few places where the HVAC MCB trips temporarily as you cross junctions, and it clunks out, the coach then goes silent and it really does go to show how noisy they actually are, I’d imagine same thing happens on overhead through neutral sections.

The PIS is okay, not all of the guards diagrams have a code so they’re supposed to revert to 0001 SWR and then use manual announcements. Sometimes the GPS doesn’t work and requires a hard off/on reboot which usually fixes everything but other than that I’ve found them reliable on the whole.

What about desiro city like the 700, 707 or 711??

Apart from the iron board seats, their decent enough trains??

Feel like since SWR is getting rid of their desiro city sets they could be sent up north to LNR or other operators??

They are third rail only, so they aren't much use away from the Southern. I reckon we will see them go to Southeastern.

Please use one of the existing “future of 707” threads, it has been done a few times now, here’s a couple of relevant previous threads in case anyone missed them:

In my opinion, when i first rode one of the thameslink desiro trains, very spacious, kinda like a tube train well all new trains seem to be following that patterns these days but apart from the iron boards they were nice professional looking probably one of the better looking desiro trains, would been interesting if they had a end gangway like their counterpart 450?

Obviously comfort is subjective but in a day to just sit around on trains, I decided to test Electrostars Vs Desiros between Ealing Broadway and Paddington as l know they run along the same tracks at roughly the same speed since they both don't stop at Acton mainline.

Long story short the desiro won by far. On the electrostar it was an extremely violent jaulty ride at higher speeds, despite travelling on the line often I was still surprised at how rough the ride was when I was actually concentrating on ride quality. The desiro however handled the same track fairly well (or at least better) as although it was very rocky, it didn't feel aggressive, just somewhat rough.

Overall both are however excellent trains in my opinion, perhaps I should've tested an Aventura almost as a control for my rigorously scientific test

In general, some of my best rides have been on Desiros, despite the loud air systems there's so close to no outside noise including traction motors even when the air conditioning briefly turns off but again, I understand it's all subjective.

You won't hear the traction motors when the air conditioning briefly switches of because that is when the train disconnects from the ac supply off (which also powers the tractrion motors) as it goes through a section isolation.

You do, as the traction motors kick back in about 5 seconds before the Aircon.
