First was technically Tyne & Wear Metro unit 4051, following that was 185111 from Newcastle to Leeds, which was no great surprise as this 185 seems to stalk me!

good man! Start as you mean to go on!
Was I admit a bit concerned that your first might have been that voyager referred to in the XC HST Usage debate.

Pacer mileage so far this year is way down on last year, 156 mileage on the other hand is sky high. Will have to put that right soon.

We'd had the boost of the pacer-themed WYDR by this time last year though.

A trip that at the start of the week I hadn't planned on gave me a first unit of 170301 with 170303 leading...could be worse I guess :P
Know for a fact my current traction is one I haven't had in the last year either in the decorated 185 :)
Todays journeys are also the first for almost a month :o

For me it was a double Tangara set on the Illiwara line from Kings Cross to Wolli Creek in Sydney at 01:15 on 1st January having seen in the New Year fireworks with my wife's family whilst on holiday.

Managed to get the photo below which I'm very happy with

My first rail journey for 2012 was on the 5th Jan on Eurostar 9180 06:50 London St Pancras - Bruxelles Midi/Zuid on a trip to Luxembourg, I went "round the back" via Liège and Gouvy outwards, then direct on the mainline via Arlon and Namur on the return.

London St Pancras - Bruxelles M/Z (Eurostar class 373 TGV-TMST)
Bruxelles M/Z - Liège-Guillemins (DB class 406 ICE 3M EMU)
Liège-Guillemins- Trois-Ponts (CFL 3000 electric loco + SNCB I10 carriages)
Trois-Ponts - Gouvy (replacement bus)
Gouvy - Troisvierges (CFL 2000 EMU)
Troisvierges - Luxembourg (CFL 4000 TRAXX electric loco + DOSTO double deck carriages)
Luxembourg - Bruxelles M/Z (SNCB AM96 EMU)
Bruxelles M/Z - London St Pancras (Eurostar class 373 TGV-TMST)

I also had an hour before needing to check in for my return Eurostar service to the UK, so got some trips on both the old AM62 EMUs and the new HLE 18 Sprinter electric locos on the Jonction Nord-Midi a couple of times.

However, my first genuine journey in the UK was with First Capital Connect on a class 313 between Highbury & Islington and Moorgate on the Northern City Line a couple of days afterwards.

Normally the Hallam line stopping services are 14x operated, so great start to year!
