I was travelling from Cosham to Portsmouth City centre ( Portsmouth & southsea) via SWR where I was in a rush and I jumped onto a train. I forgot to buy a ticket and was expecting to buy on the train. But the revenue protection officer caught me before doing that due to connection issue.
I was given a PFN and i was scary. I paid the fine but is this the end of the matter? Will I still be prosecuted?

Thanks for any replies.

If you paid the penalty fare then yes that is the end of the matter.

I assume you mean you couldn't buy a ticket online?

Just for the future you can still get a PF if you haven't bought before you board the train as your purchase will have a time-stamp on it. Unfortunately for you many less honest people only buy when they see the inspector coming....

Yes, that's good to know. I went on the train and my phone had some issues with connections. That's why I couldn't buy it.

And also try to avoid any further penalty fares accruing - for the obvious reasons of saving yourself money, but also because you don't want to build up a pattern of offending that may count against you in the future.

And because if you are stopped again by the same member of staff, they may recognise you and may not be so lenient.

Thank you. lesson learned and thanks everyone from above.
Just one more question. If I got a fare panelty notice from rail staff that means that the decision is not to report me to their prosecution department? I paid the panelty so they won't send me letters to prosecute me I guess?
I paid the panelty online when I got home (not immediately to the staff) so that won't go to my DBS or affect my credit score?

I am quite scared reading from this forum about fare evasion.

Just curious how do they find out that you used cheaper tickets? I don't think that the tickets have got your name on it?
When you were questioned by a rail staff did they not give you a panelty fare notice but went straight to prosecution?
I might be making a leap here, but if you've been fare evading but got away with nothing more than a Penalty Fare this time, this should be a wake up call that you need to stop.

Yes, that will be the end of the matter. Your DBS clearance would only be affected if you were prosecuted and convicted, which will not happen now that you have paid the Penalty Fare.

Your credit history would only be affected if you were sued, lost, and failed to pay the County Court Judgement - again, this won't happen because you've paid the Penalty Fare (and in any event, train companies do not tend to pursue things through civil claims the County Court, but as private prosecutions in the Magistrates' Court).

I hope the lesson you have learnt is that you must always buy a ticket before boarding a train at a station where facilities such as an open booking office or a working ticket machine exist. It is not OK to board a train without a ticket unless no ticket sales facilities are available at the station.

Yes. I will never do that again. Lesson learned.

A bit obvious but...
Try to leave enough time to buy a ticket (via whatever portal) at the station. Or do it by phone before even setting out. This forum is littered with passengers who either forget to buy a ticket, are in a rush, or rely on a decent phone signal/battery charge after they have (illegally) boarded the train.

I agree with what you say. Maybe i am one of those litter as you said. it is a lesson for me. I never paid attention to any of the rail company posters on the wall until this happened. People do make stupid mistakes and I have learned my lesson. I'll never do it again.

Spag23 was not calling you 'litter' or 'rubbish' etc. In idiomatic English, if a place is 'littered' with things, it just means there are many of them. The expression carries no judgement.
Thank you for your explanation. I misunderstood what Spag23 means. Sorry about that.

Thanks, Contrex. I hadn't picked up that the OP had misunderstood my equivalent word for "widespread" or "plentiful". Of course none of these carry a negative implication.

It is for the same penalty notice, they got my address wrong. Oh no, 1 digit difference in my postcode so they got my address wrong. Will that matter? I didn't think about it after I paid cuz I thought I paid it then it's fine.
Will they send me a receipt or something on paper?
Shall I send them an email to the company to change it?
