I'm looking at buying a car for my birthday (Tenner through the door next week from all members ;)). Obviously I need insurance for a Cheap 1.4 Corsa. I've looked on gocompare.com and moneysupermarket.com and they've both given the same quote from a Company called "Quinn Direct" which is £1080 annually which roughly equals £95 a month, on a provisional. I've heard there are plenty of ways of getting this cheaper but having 2 hours play on Insurance sites this is the cheapest I can come up with.

Out of interest any other members in a similar or have been recently in a situation like that?

TIA

I'm with Quinn Direct, as a named driver, and I think we pay something like £1000 for fully comp.

When I passed my test, they said they wanted an additional £142! :o

I'm doing Passplus, which is good and gets your insurance down, but Quinn Direct, and others are generally for the main driver only.

A good way to get it down would be: -
1. Add family as the main driver, if we put down my dad as the main driver with 10 years plus no claims, it saved a few hundred, but he was too scared to loose it all, so we couldn't
2. Add family as other drivers, if you have an older married man & woman as other drivers, insurance companies tend to think you're more sensible and less likely to have an accident
3. After you pass, I'd go for Passplus, as I'm expected to save a bit next year
4. Go for 3rd party only, or if you go for fire/theft or fully comp, try addons like parking in a garage, or an alarm.

I've just been learning in the instructors car so haven't needed to sort insurance. Their website recommends this site but I don't know if they're any good.

I've got my test next week, so need to start looking at cars and insurance properly...

Putting yourself down as a named driver only delays the inevitable hike, I had been driving as a named driver on my mother insurance for 4 years only to find that by moving out of home the quote went in excess of £1000, having had that now I've got the maximum no claims bonus i'm paying the extra to insure it.

I would recommend putting yourself on as a named driver with a long term driver as the main driver, but choose your insurance company carefully so you get a no claims bonus, most of these do however have strings attached.

If you have no option but to pay look for bonus accelerator policies. In my experiance you will be better off paying for either fully comp rather than the others better cover and the quote is usually a lot less extra than you would expect.

Oh and dont get any car with a Chav association, they will hike up your premium as a young driver. Avoid Novas etc, you may loose a bit of street cred but will save in the pocket

I failed my test last week..but I have it rebooked. Best of luck Craig.

I really can't afford a car itself, let alone insurance / tax / petrol, I'm just trying to pass now before the prices of tests increase. :)

I passed my test last Wednesday. Its costing me £92 a month at the moment (me and my mum as named drivers), but with me as a named driver now, my insurance has dropped to £510 per year. Just need to speak to the insurance company to sort it out now...

May be getting a new car soon too.. :)

You could try getting a smaller car, say a 1.1.

I doubt you would save much in the long run doing a pass plus.

Doing my Pass Plus next month, doesn't cost me anything, so I'll do it anyway. I'm definately looking at getting a new car, although I may wait until March to do so.

Brings back memories!! I passed eight years ago (at 17), but didnt get my 'own' car and insurance until four years ago, as I was driving my dad's van, and the policy was "owner and anyone with their permission". My first car? Clio, 1.9 (!) Diesel! now onto a Fiesta 1.8TD!

I'm not sure whether to bother driving for a while because of insurance, fuel and tax. I'll probably need to one day, but for the moment, I'm happy to stick to trains and buses, which can get me anywhere I need to go cheaper than anything else.

Get a scooter - cheaper to insure, cheaper to buy, free parking in a lot of places (around here anyway) etc. To fill mine up costs little over a fiver and does around 110 miles to a tank. You can also ride a 125cc bike on a provisional and with a CBT certificate (lasts two years) which gives you plenty of time to start saving up.

Just aswell I live 416 miles from there then ;)

60-70mph is plenty for me...

My Cygnus has room for even a larger helmet under the seat, unlike most, which is most handy. Some shots (prior to the fence dissappearing) can be found at http://www.coxster.co.uk/images/vehicle_yamaha_cygnusx.htm

I have a mate who is on Liverpool Victoria. He says that they love young drivers. try them

Regrettably, there is no such thing as 'cheap' car insurance. All the premiums are worked out by actuaries, who take into account age, where you live (by postcode, which can be quite specific), whether the car is parked 'off-road', and with some policies, your annual mileage. Also taken into account is your job or profession. Any motoring offences committed will also affect the premium charged.

Basically, you get what you pay for! By understanding and using 'the system' to your own advantage, it IS possible to obtain better quotes, but downright lying on the insurance proposal WILL nullify the insurance IF you are found out after an accident. Even if you do NOT have an accident, you are STILL driving uninsured.

Statistically speaking, young drivers are a poor risk. Companies may SAY they welcome young drivers, but believe me, you PAY for it!
