First S stock in passenger service

just had a message saying that the first S stock may enter service this monday as part of a media launch.


These are the times i have been given.

PASSENGER SERVICE MEDIA EVENT MONDAY, 2nd AUGUST 2010

The following paths will be available for S8 stock to convey
passengers in connection with a media event on the above date. These
paths will run in passenger service between Wembley Park and Watford,
calling at Wembley Park, Harrow-on-the-Hill and then all intermediate
stations between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Watford.

Remember when the first train comeing down to London was set back a few days due to people shouting the times off the roof top?

The official date for first passenger train is September - so anything before that is a bonus.

I saw it at Wembley Park and was amazed by the size! Grabbed a few photos from another platform (from a cameraphone) but didn't have time to go over as I was there for another reason entirely. Gutted really, so I'd love to know any other days/times it is running so I can try it out.

Supposedly out in general service today. Being reported as first airconditioned "tube" train though. Stupid people are then commenting that the Met is the tube line that needs aircon the least. Well done tfl press centrre (for all reports are near identical in wording) for raising false hopes!

These are the same trains that will eventually be for the Circle and H&C Line right? There are PLENTY of sections where the current C Stock are unbearable (on account of no opening windows) in the summer. They can't extract the hot air quick enough when crowded and being outdoors, they also heat up something rotten.

Now, in the case of the Met Line trains, they aren't as bad because of the windows - but air conditioning is still going to make a tremendous difference, even in the winter.

Of course, if we want to be pedantic, given the 378s are on London Overground, which is now part of TfL, then I think they beat the new trains by quite a bit. They've got aircon too - and very nice they are.

The S stock is not tube, it's surface stock and the first tranche ( 8 car units ) will replace all the A stock on the Metropolitan Main Line initially; the second tranche ( 7 car units ) will replace the C stock on the Circle, H&C and Wimbleware services.

There has been a suggestion of a third tranche ( basically more second tranche units ) to replace the D stock on the District, but given the present financial circumstances I doubt this will happen, at least not in a hurry. But we do need to bear in mind that, shocking as the realisation may be, the D stock is already over 30 years old!

With the refurbishments that the current trains have had, I doubt they need to be replaced that urgently - until the mechanics start to break down, or they corrode to the point of being unusable.

I'm sure that the trains being replaced will last/have lasted longer than the new ones will. Any idea how long these new trains are expected, or have, to last?

That's actually my point, Jon - by the time the second tranche of S stock is delivered, the D stock will be almost as old as the C stock is now!

The A stock, of course, is older at 50 years now.

Personally, I would think a design life of 40 - 50 years is what manufacturers should be aiming at, but I think they are these days aiming at around 30 - 35 years? Can anyone confirm?

I've seen a few carriages with the windows covered in vinyls advertising "We're testing a new Tube train" or similar outside Neasden depot on Thursday, was going to take a picture but they'd disappeared by the time I returned!

But yes, anyway, anyone have an idea where I could potentially see it, preferably tomorrow?

Another TFL fail! They spend millions to refurbish trains between 2005 and 2008 which are some of the better examples of tube stock on the LU just to replace them within 10 years.

The D Stock does not need replacing! If anything the C Stock needs to go right now!

There are a number of faults but the one that bugs me the most is, the ventilators don't work!

I'm not going to comment on the S Stock seen as I haven't ridden on one but tbh I'd ride an A Stock any day.

Concur with that - the decision was done and dusted during 2006, 190 odd trains.

IIRC there was some fairly last minute decisions about making all the H&C/District/Circle trains the same length, ie 7 car, but the whole order was announced at the same time, with delivery to be staged over the 6 years.

I dare say they've sensibly planned for the D stock to be the last replaced, but it is confirmed.

Looking forward to trying the S stock.

It was back in 1997, when Labour discussed upgrading the Tube network. It took some years before an agreed policy was formulated on the funding of any replacements, repairs and upgrades. And look what's happened to the Tube Private Public Partnership scheme.

Exactly what has been happened in these last 13 years and the Tube PPP ?
- some new trains on the Victoria line
- err, that's it

Regarding the S stock, they could at least have made it look better, it looks all round and bulgy!! Why is modern design so ugly?

The companies contracted to do the upgrade work seem to have pocketed loads of money and fallen way behind on just about everything. Then, they asked for more money and we had to bail them out/take over.

It's shocking to see how little work is done from one week to the next on stations being upgraded. Some look like building sites, but nothing is being done at all - and we're talking about some relatively minor refurbishment work on some.

Anyway, at least we're seeing some new rolling stock now - and hopefully a lot more in the next 13 years.
