First Private Railoperator in Austria

Starting Dec. 11, 2011 the first private Intercity operator WESTBAHN will run their new trains every hour between Vienna and Salzburg.

The trains are double-stock EMU units made by Stadler in Switzerland capable of running 200km/h (125mph)

The interiors look nice, are the seats soft? It almost seems like a channel ferry, withmultiple decks, and the low backed 'cafe' seating.


The high backed chair area seems a bit claustrophobic from the photos though, the windows could do with being a bit larger. Overall they look pretty nice though

Is West Club their First Class offering? Like the way, the seats line up with the windows in that area - will please a awful lot of members here that will

All seats are considered FIRST class, for half of the normal price of ÖBB. Westclub Class costs a bit more and you get the table seats and always the seat next to you vacant ! The whole train is supplied with free WIFI free of charge for all passengers

The seats are very comfortable in genuine leather and all seats have ample leg room ( tested by me with 2m/6'6") and a very large fold down table. Every seat has it's own power outlet. The standing hight on lower and upper floor is 2m.

Another thought, but paint the pannelling in the toilets a different colour, like a navy blue or something, and they would seem much more modern. That green is almost as bad as the discoloured beige seen on some unrefurbished BR units.

Also, What happened to the table at the facing chairs in the 'standard sitze'? However the kind of 'lounge' searing at the 'sitzeche' seems quite nice, a definate improvement from some of the random seats you will see in a vestibule

Sorry for being really picky here, but with a bit of luck, something I might say could give you an idea to improve your train. and Im glad the seats arent dissapointingly hard when you sit on them, it seems to be becoming a common problem over here

Colours are sometimes a question of taste....

There are only a few facing seats in the standard cars and yes they have no table. But as already written the other seats have very large fold down tables.

The fares are very cheap, consider Railjet/OIC Salzburg-Vienna costs €51,80 whereas Westbahn costs €23,80 or Westclub €41,60

The reason behind the low fares is that many people are traveling with an 50% discount card on ÖBB, which means that traveling on Westbahn cost the same like traveling on ÖBB with this discount card. Tickets for Westbahn are only obtainable online or directly in the train.

However, travellers from outside Austria are unlikely to have the ÖBB 50% discount card, my DB Bahncard50 only gives me a 25% discount on the Railjet fare (reduced to €38,90) so Westbahn is still cheaper. Also considering that the Railjet/OIC seats are nothing special, this could be worth trying
