First Online Assessment

Hi all,

I just completed my first online assessment after an initial successful application and I'm unsure whether I done alright or not.

It was a few questions of true, false or cannot say, and after the 'practice' area, which I got all correct, it went into the real test. The thing is, nearly all of them I had to answer 'cannot say' which just seems wrong... But then there wasn't anything to indicate whether the statement I read was true or false outright so that is why I went with that answer. There were a couple though that read something like 'obesity is increasing in developed countries' but the question was 'obesity is increasing worldwide'. Now to me developed countries is NOT worldwide, because a lot of countries in the world are undeveloped! So I put false, but is that right?

Sometimes I can read too far into things so I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not in the railway world!

These tests can be like that (Verbal Reasoning Tests). I’ve done my fair share and they don’t get any clearer lol. From experience though, you just have to look at the wording of the questions and make sure the question isn’t actually answered within the passage, but worded differently to trick you. In your case, you’re right that there’s not enough evidence to say obesity is increasing worldwide, when the passage only mentioned developed countries. However, if only saying what you see in the passage, the direct answer to your question which is evident in the passage is actually “false - it isn’t increasing worldwide” as the information there to see is that it’s increasing in developed countries. It is easy to answer “not enough evidence” for all the questions to be quite honest, unless the answers are blatant. Using your example, it’s certainly not a clear-cut answer, and I’m pretty sure I had a few like that in my last one, and the more I look at it, I agree with your way of answering. Thing is, we will never know I guess? It’s just a good job they’re not all like that.

You also have to try and take out the actual facts from your train of thought and only use what’s in front of you. Hope this makes sense. I find I usually do better than I thought I had at these tests. Good luck!

Personally, I would say 'Cannot Say' because there is not enough information, ie, about obesity in other types of countries. I would only say false if the information was contradictory.
