Lubbly jubbly, if those timings are vaguely accurate I think I'll take a walk over to Moor Street in the morning to get some photos of the first train out of the reopened bay platforms.

Does anyone think there's likely to be restricted access to the bay platforms? Seeing as they're brand new I have no idea what the deal's going to be with them.

while i was at work yesterday, my brothers went down to Moor Street and they haven't installed any barriers only on the through platforms

Fair enough, I'll have a valid travel pass with me anyway, but I'm just curious as to how closely monitored platform access will be.

The barriers are only on the access to platforms 1 and 2 at the moment, not that they are in use all the time anyway.

I don't know if they'll open up the direct access from the concourse onto platforms 3/4/5 for these new trains (its currently fenced off and access is only via the platforms 1/2 gateline), or if they'll have people go through the platforms 1/2 gateline then make a sharp right turn for platforms 3/4/5. The plan is, eventually, to put gates at the top of platforms 3/4/5, but they're not there yet.

It will be the first steam express out of the "new" Moor Street. Sorry to say there was a press special out of the new platform 4 around 12.30 today using a Chiltern 168 Turbostar. It was amply covered by the press and TV so look out for the footage on news programmes.

Yeah the 28XX is still there. I agree that 168s are great trains for the Chiltern route.

Will the two hourly xx33 off Birmingham Moor St to Leamington Spa be formed of a Class 165 Turbo from Monday?

I think it will be personally as it is not a Clubman specified working in the timetable.

Went earlier and it was good to get a photo of Steam loco 9600 and 168107 at the new platform.

Not quite sure how the diagrams will work though. Just been studying the timetable and there seem to be 2 morning southbound services and 1 northbound, but only to Banbury...

One set is a WSMR set that will be hired from them in their silver livery, released from the reduction of services from 4 to 3 each way. This will form a morning service from Birnmingham Moor Street returning at 16.33 following the 16.30 service to Wrexham, so yes, 2 simultaneous loco-hauled departures! As far as I have read in TR UK, there will be first class, but no catering provision. For the other diagram, they're using a 67 most likely in EWS colours and 6 Mark 3 TSO's hired from Cargo-D or sourced from DB Regio's pool, which will be in Blue and Grey. Personally, I expect that this diagram will use the Chiltern DVT and the other a WSMR DVT to retain uniformity in the livery of the Birmingham set. The Banbury set is booked to depart Marylebone at 18.06 of an evening. Hope this helps.

Historical reasons - the route from Paddington via Reading and Oxford being the original GWR route to Birmingham? Given it was steam, I think it's supposed to be a historical thing. I presume it's a 'nod' to the 'old' railways generally, since it's opening up 'old' platforms at Moor Street, using an 'old' steam train - so they're going the 'old' way to London.

Also, it goes via Oxford and Reading. *IF* Chiltern were to decide to run more trains to Paddington, which I very much doubt, their usual route of choice is via Ruslip and Greenford, not via Oxford.

The steam express carried the headboard of "The Inter-City" which was a train which ran between London and Birmingham, via High Wycombe, so logically, it should have taken this route. However, the main reason it didn't is because the Chiltern line via High Wycombe was closed for engineering work, there being no trains at all south of Banbury on that route that day...

Sort of - the historical route of the London-Birmingham GWR expresses was out of Paddington, and then via High Wycombe and Banbury to Birmingham.
