I know what you mean when they say that they offer character and I have become fond of them recently but I’m not sure I agree on the comfort side but they are ok.
The only issue with comfort for me is the gearboxes can sometimes make the bus jerk, I don't think the gearboxes are suited to such a high powered engine perhaps? The seating on them is great, the suspension is great and the ambience is also great! They are also nice and warm in cold weather.

That’s probably what I’m thinking of when they jerk forward.

The Streetlites really aren't any worse in terms of ride quality than the comparable e200 at the time. There are clearly issues with the gearboxes but that can be sorted; another driver complaint is that the brakes can be sharp. However, I recently travelled on an example with Hulleys of Baslow and the ride and the gearbox were absolutely fine. There is also a design fault that means the emergency door mechanism rattles like anything, and drivers have complained about sharpness of brakes. However, I've travelled on them a lot (I live in a First patch) and they're ok in comparison with the e200 - not exceptional either way. It's when you compare them to an Eclipse that ride quality is highlighted but that's the same for lightweight vs heavyweight chassis. Perhaps the biggest thing is that the e200mmc came out about 3 years later and that moved standards ahead.

Also, there was much talk about enthusiasts about how Streetlites wouldn't cope etc. However, they've not been like Optare Excels being disposed of early; the first ones are now coming up to 10 years old and they're still ok.

I agree. I use an Arriva interface urban route to/from work and its operated by a mixture of Streetlites and AFL200s.
The Streetlites are very comfortable, but the ADL200s are quite uncomfortable

The issue isn't the brakes but rather the retarder, Optare Solo SRs with the same Cummins/Voith set up have the same issue but even worse. I do agree though, they do have their faults but they're not as bad as people make out, they're no worse than a comparable E200 and they're far better than a Dreadful Dart. Although the E200MMCs are nicer as a passenger they're not without their faults either, the longer examples are on a wheelbase that's far too long with a dreadful turning circle and sit too low to the ground so are prone rear end and side damage. Aberdeen have had a lot of issues with theirs in the past year or so because of this and have banned them from the route they're branded for...

I've noticed recently that First buses don't seem to have the talkback of in cab radio any more. I used to hear the controller sending out general messages. Does anyone know if they now use a different method of communication?

Ticket machines.

I once received a ticket for my journey, attached to which was another ticket, containing instructions from the depot engineer about which mobile number to use because his phone was not available.

Oh so the ticket machines work as an Instant Messenger for the driver to contact control?

It's built into modern machines now. I know Vix (the ones Stagecoach use), have it but it's very basic and radio is preferred

Otherwise, Ticketer and Transmach have two way messaging built into the machines.

I've seen photos of 37431 and 37556 still with Greater Manchester fleetnames in York
Correct. Don't know when/if they'll be revinyl'd

Certainly do have it, but for getting a message out to everyone (incl. non-driving people), ticketer messages are much more efficient as everyone sees them as soon as they log in or as they are sent. It's an option to print out messages that you receive

I wish Oldham would get newer stock, like the B9 Mark 2 wright bodies. They only have 2 for Vantage spares.

Is there any news as to when and where the new electric Arrival buses will be trialled?
There was a recent update here:

How long will it be before First get the cancellation feature on the app to every operation and how much will the depots make sure all cancellations are known? With where technology is these days for me it's a big letdown that the app is so poor

I don't know their system or how widespread it is. I just ask though, are you sure that it isn't already group wide and that it's just depots not reporting cancellations?

The Twitter team have been replying to people here in Glasgow saying it's on its way for about a year now and it's still not here. If it's depots not reporting them that's another issue that needs to be addressed in itself

This is the more likely reason. However it does not distract from the fact how underwhelming the award winning First app is - I don't really care how many seats free my bus has. I want to know where it is, how late it is and if it's going to get me to my destination - only the former can the First app show, when it doesn't crash that is. I'd expect the "bus on a map" feature to show all of this information (i.e. location, service number, destination, delay).

The first app does need a few tweaks and it could show under the due time wether its early or late similar to how Arriva's old app did
