I always tend to believe that when significant issues like this go strangely quiet it's because a key player(s) is doing a lot of research and homework behind the scenes. Personally, I think that there may well be some significant news by the year end.

Quite possibly, but based on FGP director share buying, they can't currently be aware of any such approaches or negotiations.

Or in true FGP fashion, they could just be sitting on their hands / buring their heads in the sand hoping it will all come out in the wash....

All seems to have gone very quiet on First Group speculation, the fact that Wolfhart Hasuer added to his FGP holding on 26th Sept, suggests nothing that could have a positive material impact on shareprice is happening in the background either.... other wise that would be construed as insider trading. Next update will be half year results 13th Nov.

Is that not part of his monthly remuneration of share options?

26 Sep followed 30 Aug (10673 shares), 25 Jul (11,089 shares), 25 Jun (12,104 shares) - the fluctuation of the shares purchased mirroring the changes in share price.

Looks like a contractual thing. There's another monthly one for a director of Computershare as well

FirstGroup plc (the “Company”) announces that, as per his standing instruction to allocate part of the additional fees he receives as interim Executive Chairman to acquire shares in the Company, Wolfhart Hauser has purchased 10,459 shares at a price of £0.949 per share.
(First regulatory announcements)

I think O'Toole had a similar arrangement.

I have small amounts of lucidity ;) but like a stopped clock!!

talks may well be going on at the moment - or not! I wonder if Greyhound's management team are busy in meetings at present ?

You would imagine so though they are busy closing down the various chunks anyway

Some positive vibes from First UK Bus since introduction of Ticketer, see pg 11 of Latest Routeone, UK Bus has seen revenue's rise 'significantly' and it's margins increase 'very substantially'
http://www.route-one.net/magazines/emag/routeone760/page_10.html

Also, interesting to note from the recent Stagecoach trading update, that they are also struggling in US coaching:

Stagecoach North America:

The like-for-like revenue decline of 3.8% for the Division includes 1.8% decline for megabus.com North America. megabus revenue per mile for the period was up 3.8%. Trading at the other businesses in North America remains in line with our expectations. Like-for-like revenue at these businesses decreased by 4.7%, reflecting the benefit in the equivalent period last year from rail replacement contracts linked to train disruptions on New Jersey Transit and Long Island Rail Road.

One of the pitfalls of having a single twitter account for First West Yorkshire

They’ve tweeted today that they are improving First by investing 71m in new buses for Leeds.

Which was met with a barrage of replies saying how about new buses in Bradford, and then people counteracting that with, Never mind Bradford, how about new buses in Halifax and Huddersfield?

Flagship routes in those areas in the hands of 05 reg buses and some routes using W reg buses.

First Manchester are to close Rusholme Depot

Just seen that pop up on the staff app now. Fingers crossed those poor guys at Rusholme will now be bumped upto the standard rate that we enjoy at the other depots now - they really have been treated as second class drivers for a little too long!

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who saw this coming from a mile away... Hopefully this will help to reduce the losses(?) that First Manchester are making.

You have to wonder why they bought Finglands when you consider all they’ve done is run it down and then close it.

I bet Stagecoach have never had such a large market share on Wilmslow Road

Was Rusholme a leased or owned depot? Personally I wouldn’t be surprised to see more leased out stations closed as the leases come for renewal with work moved to owned depots if the space exists.

Do we know what depots are leased and which ones are owned? Do we know if any depots are in prime value areas? I doubt Clacton will be sold off for much..

Whether or not Rusholme was leased or owned, the depot will have already been earmarked for student housing, being in the prime location.

One of the big factors leading to its downfall was the consolidation of both universities' estates closer to the city centre. Where the normal student area would cut off at Didsbury, consolidation now means the far point is Fallowfield, signing First's death warrant on the 42 and giving Stagecoach 100% market share on the Parrs Wood - Withington stretch. I bet the top brass at Hyde Road will be pinching themselves to make sure they're not dreaming!

Also can't forget the long running industrial action at Rusholme causing bad PR with the public - not like First are loved in GM in thr first place!

Not really anything new, but there's a Premium article in the Telegraph suggesting top shareholders are getting frustrated by the lack of action:
FirstGroup, the South Western Railway operator, is facing demands to fast-track the break-up of its global transport empire. Leading investors have called on Wolfhart Hauser, the executive chairman, to take action.

FirstGroup has been without a chief executive for nearly six months. After rebuffing two approaches from private equity giant Apollo earlier this year, boss Tim O’Toole quit after announcing full-year losses of £327m.

Best known in Britain for operating rail franchises and bus networks, the company’s prized assets are its North American businesses First Student and First Transit. The former is the largest school bus operator in the US.

FirstGroup is also grappling with its disastrous investment in the Greyhound bus network. A top-10 shareholder told The Telegraph: “We would like to see a strategy that realises value from the various parts of the business and the more quickly this can be realised the more value this gives.”

About time those top shareholders stopped messing about and took concerted action.

Totally agree! Flixbus has announced their next phase of expansion against Greyhound Lines:

It was Flixbus competition that stopped NX Group in its tracks expanding past initial coach routes in Germany with city2city, that operation was then shutdown due to losses.

FlixBus expands to New York, Texas in next stage of U.S. push
‘Competition is something we’re not afraid of,’ CEO says

FlixMobility GmbH, will expand to New York City next year, Bloomberg reports.

After an initial U.S. launch earlier this year connecting California college campuses with destinations like Las Vegas and Disneyland, the Munich-based company will start routes to the Big Apple and Texas in 2019. Next comes expansion to Chicago, Florida and the Pacific Northwest. The plan is to have the company’s bright green and orange coaches crisscross America next year to take on Greyhound Lines Inc.

“Our goal is now to duplicate the success we had in the West Coast across the country,” Chief Executive Officer Andre Schwaemmlein said in an interview. “I’ve got 50 competitors in Europe, and 10 of those are state-owned with unlimited resources. Competition is something we’re not afraid of.”

After starting with a handful of routes in Bavaria five years ago when Germany opened up intercity bus travel, Flix has become a dominant force in Europe, serving 2,000 destinations in 28 countries. The company’s rapid expansion, which includes train services in Germany, was facilitated by staying out of the messy and capital-intensive business of owning and operating buses.

Like Uber Technologies Inc., Flix contracts out the services it offers. Bus companies -- which maintain the coaches and hire the drivers -- keep roughly 70 percent of ticket receipts, while Flix handles sales, scheduling, customer service and marketing. The company says that makes it more flexible than traditional bus companies in adapting to demand.

Tickets from downtown Los Angeles to the Las Vegas Strip are available on the company’s website for as little as $4.99. While low fares are clearly a draw, Flix says its strength is in appealing to new customers with its app-based booking system and amenities such as Wifi and electrical outlets.

After five months on the West Coast, “we’re seeing extremely good passenger numbers -- better than some markets that we started in in Europe,” said Schwaemmlein. “We’re very happy” with developments so far, he said, adding that the company is ahead of rivals like Stagecoach Group Plc’s Megabus on the West Coast. Its Los Angeles to Las Vegas route is on average 75 percent full, while services in southern California and San Francisco Bay area have an average occupancy of 60 percent.

New York represents a bigger test for the German startup, which is backed by General Atlantic LLC, Silver Lake Capital Management LLC and Holtzbrinck Ventures Adviser GmbH. In addition to Greyhound, travelers can choose from regional bus companies, train lines and low-cost airlines.

“The West Coast was about testing a hypothesis,” said Schwaemmlein. “Now we want to go pedal to the metal toward number two, and hopefully number one someday.”

I like that spin... Stagecoach was more East coast operations, so if you have more routes of course your be ahead.. what are the chance of Greyhound selling to Flixbus?

It's possible, as Flixbus have made a number of acquisitions during their rapid expansion (inc Post Bus, Polskibus, Megabus European Ops + numerous others. That said, if you were Flixbus, would you pay top dollar for Greyhound now, knowing you could simply expand and weaken the business and buy the leftovers at a later date for a knocked down price. Greyhound isn't strong or innovative enough to compete with Flixbus.

Exactly so put in a low ball offer which isn't too bad for certains parts of the business. I dont think Flixbus wants all of Greyhound but parts of it might be the way to go.

If I was Flixbus I wouldn't bother buying any of Greyhound. Flixbus is a modern, innovative, operator that has no ancient 'baggage' to its name. Greyhound smacks of everything that has gone wrong, lack of innovation, poor management etc - it's no surprise that it's part of First Group !
Flixbus should just get on with the successful approach they've used to date, not much point bothering with an old-world competitor on it's last legs.

You might find that Flixbus may prefer to acquire / partner smaller independent US coach operators than run their own scheduled services and snub buying any bits of Greyhound altogether.

Or

Another scenario, if there's little interest from others in buying Greyhound, it may be in First Group's interests to partner with Flixbus before they get too big.

I note that the article reminds us that First Group "have been without a CEO for nearly 6 months" - Ambitious high flyers not exactly queuing up to take on the challenge and turn it around!
