as they haven’t been working for a wee while.
Working fine these last couple of weeks - I alternate between an independent app and First’s, and there’s been no issues. Saying the ‘passenger feed was turned off’ is highly suspect. Who turned what off? Since the First App shows tracking as before, it’s an odd description of ‘off’!

"Passenger" is the name given to a company that supplies vehicle tracking data to it's own produced apps for many SME companies (all the ones that no longer appear on bustimes).

The open data feed that leaves "Passenger" for other tech companies to use is no longer used by "BusTimes". That was a choice made by the owner/operator of BusTimes.

If you want to see the tracking information of these SME companies, use either their own app (produced by Passenger) or the MyTrip app which also shows many of the companies.

The trackability of the FirstGroup companies appears to be separate to the Passenger/BusTimes "issues".

So if it is an issue with a third party data supplier, then surely the issue is for them to resolve? First Bus appear to defer to BusTimes in matters of timetabling availability - so why there would be an issue with the live feed from First’s Ticketer machines? Unless there are data fees involved which have still to be thrashed out?

so Passenger Ltd. Got taken over by Masabi, and their API webpage has a quote from the owner of Bustimes.org as endorsing the product.

I suspect it is a Scottish Government or SPT induced problem as all the England based customers are showing on bustimes.org thd only reason it wouldnt be those is the D&G operators not showing

Does the mandatory open data standard not apply in Scotland? It looks like Glasgow is letting the side down a bit.
It does not, bus open data standards only apply in England. The Scottish Government is pursuing similar regulations but they likely won't mandate live tracking until the first half of 2028 at the earliest. That's likely the earliest date First will allow their services and vehicles to be tracked outside of the app as you also couldn't track vehicles to the same extent as other operators prior to the Passenger feed on bustimes being switched off - vehicles wouldn't show on the map but you could see what route individual vehicles were operating on.

Ah, so it is Scotland Regional Council busybodies making work for themselves, delaying rollout of what is effectively an international data standard to justify "earning" their crust.

There’ll be more to this as the Scotland National Government would be embracing an international standard not fighting it. Follow the money!

What you’re referring to isn’t normal BusTimes tracking. It’s running off SPT departure boards. I’m referring to proper tracking—like the live map used by First in Wales and England. As you’ll see, there are no vehicles shown on the map for First Glasgow and Aberdeen.

The person who said off was the owner of BusTimes in the BusTimes Discord, where he explained that he was no longer using the passenger API. That’s why there was a sudden stop in tracking for all McGill’s vehicles, Shiel Buses, West Coast Motors, Highland Council, and Moffat & Williamson, just to name a few.
Some operators now use the SPT departure boards, but that isn’t what you’d call proper tracking. Proper tracking is what operators like Ember, Stagecoach, and Lothian does on BusTimes.

SPT must be using a consolidator for their boards. I was in Kilmarnock last week (Stagecoach mainly) and we were told to ignore mush of the displayed data as it was showing many phantom journeys from stances that were not happening.
At stops ‘proper’ tracking isn’t really a benefit - recently the one in the photo started listing services on different screens rolling be tween them. It was not in the expected order of arrival times.

From Sunday 10th May until Sunday 17th May, East Dunbartonshire Council is proposing a closure of Kirkintilloch Road beginning after Westerhill Road and ending at Cadder Roundabout.

88s and 89/A/Bs will be heavily affected as a result of this, and if the closure does go ahead then all of these routes will likely be split in two.

Lothian and Stagecoach in Fife and Ayrshire seem to track - Ember is also highly visible across Scotland and Stagecoach's interurban expresses are all showing. Its just Houston's of Lockerbie, Whitelaw's, McGill's, WestCoastMotors, Shiels, and McCall's that aren't and all (except McGill's) of those are SMEs, so why is First not showing?
The difference there is that Lothian use WayFarer 6s & Stagecoach use VIX 5800s, not Ticketers. Unsure what Ember’s machines are called but they sure aren’t Ticketers.

Like I've previously said the 900 runs 24/7 it stops at Easterhouse Train Station so a connection is possible

I used Easterhouse as an example, there are loads of places where there is no connection too so it's still pretty pointless. And using the 900 and the 77 at night(or any time) would be rather expensive.

A city like Glasgow needs a proper 24hr bus network but with cowboys like First etc running the shop it's never going to happen.

They use a custom-made ticket machine exclusive to Ember coaches.

I’m aware, just wasn’t sure if they tracked through an amended version of Apple FindMy or if they tracked using a different device.
It's a custom built software from the ground up using an iPad for the driver interface and a secondary andriod based system which is hidden elsewhere in the vehicle that links card payments, concession card data and tracking

Probably Caledonia’s batch of Newpowers.
First Bus ordered 30 Streetdeck repowers last year from Kleandrive and I do not think any have been tested in service yet, let alone being in service. They are also to repower Enviro400s shortly, although this is unlikely for them, but First has an investment in Kleandrive, so it may be possible.

There is a logic to this sometimes - the proposed Scottish BODS will be a lot more comprehensive than English BODS, for example operators will have to report on the functionality of USB chargers on the vehicle.

This is gold-plating at its worst. USB chargers onboard? What if they're dud USB slots? Does a bus need kept in if the USB chargers aren't working? Is this compatible with the drive to electrify the buses - it probably shortens the range.

I assume you don't carry a mobile phone that runs out of battery quickly because it's old, as many people who rely on buses will do as they may not be able to afford to replace it. It is, to an extent, a matter of social welfare.

Standard SNP with the usual nonsense of having to make something that's the same as England but put an SNP name tag and an extra £100 million on the bill just to have me extra feature!

Passed 2 Enviro 200's being towed South on the M74 at Larkhall around 4:30pm today. One was 44449 but didn't catch the ID of the other - only know it was in the revised First Group scheme.

Charging a phone on a bus was a perk, but making it a standard just raises expectations and showcases the new "deficit" among all bus operators - it stops being "oooo i can charge my phone" to "ugh, the USB isn't working". Its not like actual tracking is working outside of operators' own apps. Ditto accessibility certificates - these have been law for decades now, there arent any used which you can't get a wheelchair on.

Battery life depends on the make and model. My older phone held charge way longer than my current on which barely lasts a day. I dont bring a cable with me so i don't really benefit either way if there is USB charging.

Re the SNP - they used to be the leader of the UK snd now they follow, looking for an excuse to be "more" than England - which i wpuldn't mind if their reasons weren't rubbish

It's always my luck when my battery is low and I don't have my power bank with me and it's a bus that has USBs only for them not to be working, I carry a 0.9m Cable in my pocket all the time because it can come in handy

Did you happen to note if the towing vehicles belonged to Wigleys? Thank you.
