If you don't feel you are competitive enough to get the job then perhaps you need to work on improving yourself instead of asking the competition to bow out. If that's not the case then why are you worried about this guy?

I'm not offended ayamonte, I just think you're wrong. Would you begrudge the retired fireman starting up his own business and becoming a millionaire ? Maybe if his business competed with yours you would, but if it didn't you probably wouldn't care.
Unfortunately for you that chap, (who had made a good career choice in terms of pension) is now at age 50 looking for another career, which is the same as the one you want - tough mate get over it. I have come up against the same such people - retired RAF, Navy, Police etc - and they have got the trainee driver roles ahead of me. That's because they have exactly the experience the TOC's are looking for. That's life my friend............

Getting back on topic.I attended the stage 1 asessment this morning in Bristol which finished a little after 1030 having started at 0845 exactly.

Seems to be a variety of people applying including one of FGW's trolley dolleys (Or whatever they are called)

The gentleman running the asessment said that he had another group this afternoon along with some tommorow and wednesday.

Looking back I think I did ok on the various tests although like everyone I do like to think I could have done some better.

Should hear back from FGW later this week

I would.

Why not strive to continue for a nice way of life, several holidays a year, a nice car every year or two, being able to do what you want, when you want, follow your dreams, go abroad and follow the Bristish Lions, go to every Ryder cup............hhhmmmmmm, I just wish I was in the firemans position.

Well if they have created that second job for them selves out of nothing and their own inactive then no absolutely not, But if they are potentially taking that job away from someone for a ''hobby'' who doesn't have a job and they are looking for one like the 2.5 million + unemployed at the moment then yes morally I do.

The point I make is you choose to retire from these rare secure well paid positions with a good pension hen do so.

Yes: he chose to retire and now wants to do something else.

But you say he's not allowed to work again because he already has too much money/has had life too easy. Maybe you should join the Fire Service then...

NO where at any point do isay someone is not allowed to work again? Or that somebody has too much money? Again point missed all together, anyway good luck to all those with live applications. Of course that is if you havent chosen to retire already at the end of your working life with a great pension.

How did you find GBT?

Truth be told I found the paper version easier than the computer version.

If your asessment is at the Bristol Hotel it is actually a lot quicker to get get from Bristol Temple Meads than google maps says and is just on the opposite side of the harbour from the V-shed.

The asessments are held the Bristol Hotels conference Centre which is seperated from the hotel by an entrance to a car park.
If you have the same gentleman I had today he is very good at explaininng things if you dont understand something.

Well I think everything went well today, mind you we completed all the test in just over 1 hour 45 minutes even with all the breaks.

FGW are supposed to be letting us know our results by the end of this week

Just finished first stage assessments at Bristol. Think ive done ok but probably could have done a little better.
Very thankful i hammered the paper version of the group bourdon test. Made it that little easier. Now to await results.

Requirements for a depot driver are exactly the same as for mainline drivers so I doubt it. Also I do not believe FGW have depot drivers. Remember a lot of TOCs consider depot driving as a stepping stone to mainline driving so test candidates ability to be a mainline driver.

I know of people that scored a border line pass and have been offered depot driving jobs instead of mainline, first have depot drivers at reading and old oak, first dont see it as a stepping stone and you would have to resit the tests to go into mainline driving

Ok fair enough. Seems First are different to other TOCs who do seeing as a stepping stone and test to mainline standard when candidates apply for depot driving jobs.

I would my friend went for mainline driver and after getting a borderline pass they rang him about a month after asking if he would like to go depot driving as he had not scored high enough for mainline but reached the cut off to go depot driving (internal policy he said) apparently first wont take anyone with a boarderline for mainline.
